1Se alguém escapar ao excesso das riquezas e ao obstáculo que elas põem no caminho da vida, podendo desfrutar dos bens eternos, mas depois do selo e da redenção vier, por ignorância ou circunstâncias involuntárias, a cair em pecados ou transgressões e se deixar arrastar por completo, tal homem é inteiramente rejeitado por Deus. A todo aquele que se volta para Deus de verdade e de todo o coração as portas estão abertas, e o Pai três vezes jubiloso recebe o filho que se arrepende sinceramente. O verdadeiro arrependimento consiste em não continuar preso aos mesmos pecados pelos quais Ele pronunciou contra si a morte, mas extirpá-los completamente da alma. Quando são arrancados, Deus volta a habitar em ti. Pois se diz que há grande e extraordinária alegria e festa nos céus, junto ao Pai e aos anjos, quando um pecador se converte e se arrepende. Por isso Ele também proclama: 'Quero misericórdia, e não sacrifício.' 'Não desejo a morte, mas o arrependimento do pecador.' 'Ainda que vossos pecados sejam como lã escarlate, Eu os farei brancos como a neve; ainda que sejam mais negros do que as trevas, Eu os lavarei e os tornarei como lã branca.' Somente Deus tem poder de conceder o perdão dos pecados e não imputar as transgressões; pois o Senhor também nos ordena perdoar cada dia os irmãos arrependidos. 'Se nós, sendo maus, sabemos dar boas dádivas', quanto mais pertence à natureza do Pai das misericórdias, o bom Pai de toda consolação, cheio de compaixão e misericórdia, ser paciente e esperar os que se voltaram para Ele. E voltar-se significa realmente cessar de pecar e não mais olhar para três.

1If one should escape the superfluity of riches, and the difficulty they interpose in the way of life, and be able to enjoy the eternal good things; but should happen, either from ignorance or involuntary circumstances, after the seal s and redemption, to fall into sins or transgressions so as to be quite carried away; such a man is entirely rejected by God. For to every one who has turned to God in truth, and with his whole heart, the doors are open, and the thrice-glad Father receives His truly repentant son. And true repentance is to be no longer bound in the same sins for which He denounced death against Himself, but to eradicate them completely from the soul. For on their extirpation God takes up His abode again in thee. For it is said there is great and exceeding joy and festival in the heavens with the Father and the angels when one sinner turns and repents. Wherefore also He cries, "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice." "I desire not the death, but the repentance of the sinner." "Though your sins be as scarlet wool, I will make them white as snow; though they be blacker than darkness, I will wash and make them like white wool." For it is in the power of God alone to grant the forgiveness of sins, and not to impute transgressions; since also the Lord commands us each day to forgive the repenting brethren. "And if we, being evil, know to give good gifts," much more is it the nature of the Father of mercies, the good Father of all consolation, much pitying, very merciful, to be long-suffering, to wait for those who have turned. And to turn is really to cease from our sins, and to look no longer behind.
