1Chapter.

2E Maria era admirada por todo o povo de Israel; e quando ela tinha três anos, ela caminhava com um passo tão maduro, falava tão perfeitamente e passava seu tempo tão assiduamente nos louvores a Deus, que todos ficaram surpresos com ela e maravilhados; e ela não foi considerada uma criança, mas uma pessoa adulta de trinta anos.

2And Mary was held in admiration by all the people of Israel; and when she was three years old, she walked with a step so mature, she spoke so perfectly, and spent her time so assiduously in the praises of God, that all were astonished at her, and wondered; and she was not reckoned a young infant, but as it were a grown-up person of thirty years old.

3Ela era tão constante em oração e sua aparência era tão bela e gloriosa que quase ninguém conseguia olhar para seu rosto.

3She was so constant in prayer, and her appearance was so beautiful and glorious, that scarcely any one could look into her face.

4E ela se ocupava constantemente com seus trabalhos de lã, de modo que em sua tenra idade pudesse fazer tudo o que as mulheres velhas não eram capazes de fazer.

4And she occupied herself constantly with her wool-work, so that she in her tender years could do all that old women were not able to do.

5E esta foi a ordem que ela estabeleceu para si mesma: desde a manhã até a hora terceira ela permaneceu em oração; do terceiro ao nono ela estava ocupada com a tecelagem; e a partir do nono ela voltou a se dedicar à oração.

5And this was the order that she had set for herself: From the morning to the third hour she remained in prayer; from the third to the ninth she was occupied with her weaving; and from the ninth she again applied herself to prayer.

6Ela não parou de orar até que lhe apareceu o anjo do Senhor, de cujas mãos ela costumava receber alimento; e assim ela se tornou cada vez mais perfeita na obra de Deus.

6She did not retire from praying until there appeared to her the angel of the Lord, from whose hand she used to receive food; and thus she became more and more perfect in the work of God.

7Então, quando as virgens mais velhas descansaram dos louvores de Deus, ela não descansou de forma alguma; de modo que nos louvores e vigílias de Deus ninguém foi encontrado antes dela, ninguém mais instruído na sabedoria da lei de Deus, mais humilde na humildade, mais elegante no canto, mais perfeito em todas as virtudes.

7Then, when the older virgins rested from the praises of God, she did not rest at all; so that in the praises and vigils of God none were found before her, no one more learned in the wisdom of the law of God, more lowly in humility, more elegant in singing, more perfect in all virtue.

8Ela era de fato firme, imóvel, imutável e avançava diariamente para a perfeição.

8She was indeed stedfast, immoveable, unchangeable, and daily advancing to perfection.

9Ninguém a viu zangada, nem a ouviu falar mal.

9No one saw her angry, nor heard her speaking evil.

10Toda a sua fala era tão cheia de graça que seu Deus era reconhecido como estando em sua língua.

10All her speech was so full of grace, that her God was acknowledged to be in her tongue.

11Ela estava sempre empenhada em orar e pesquisar a lei, e estava ansiosa para que, por qualquer palavra sua, pecasse em relação a seus companheiros.

11She was always engaged in prayer and in searching the law, and she was anxious lest by any word of hers she should sin with regard to her companions.

12Então ela ficou com medo de que em sua risada, ou no som de sua bela voz, ela cometesse alguma falta, ou que, estando exultante, ela demonstrasse qualquer maldade ou arrogância a um de seus iguais.

12Then she was afraid lest in her laughter, or the sound of her beautiful voice, she should commit any fault, or lest, being elated, she should display any wrong-doing or haughtiness to one of her equals.

13Ela abençoou a Deus sem interrupção; e para que, mesmo em sua saudação, ela não deixasse de louvar a Deus; se alguém a saudava, ela respondia em forma de saudação: Graças a Deus.

13She blessed God without intermission; and lest perchance, even in her salutation, she might cease from praising God; if any one saluted her, she used to answer by way of salutation: Thanks be to God.

14E dela começou o costume de os homens dizerem: Graças a Deus, quando se saudavam.

14And from her the custom first began of men saying, Thanks be to God, when they saluted each other.

15Ela se refrescava apenas com o alimento que recebia diariamente da mão do anjo; mas a comida que obtinha dos sacerdotes ela dividia entre os pobres.

15She refreshed herself only with the food which she daily received from the hand of the angel; but the food which she obtained from the priests she divided among the poor.

16Os anjos de Deus eram vistos muitas vezes falando com ela e a obedeciam diligentemente.

16The angels of God were often seen speaking with her, and they most diligently obeyed her.

17Se alguém que estivesse doente tocasse nela, na mesma hora voltava para casa curado.

17If any one who was unwell touched her, the same hour he went home cured.
