1Chapter.

2Pela segunda vez o mestre Zachyas, doutor da lei, disse a José e Maria: Dêem-me o menino, e eu o entregarei ao mestre Levi, que lhe ensinará as letras e o instruirá.

2A second time the master Zachyas, doctor of the law, said to Joseph and Mary: Give me the boy, and I shall hand him over to master Levi, who shall teach him his letters and instruct him.

3Então José e Maria, acalmando Jesus, levaram-no às escolas, para que lhe ensinassem as letras do velho Levi.

3Then Joseph and Mary, soothing Jesus, took Him to the schools, that He might be taught His letters by old Levi.

4E assim que Ele entrou, Ele segurou a língua.

4And as soon as He went in He held His tongue.

5E o mestre Levi disse uma carta a Jesus, e, começando pela primeira letra Aleph, disse-lhe: Responda.

5And the master Levi said one letter to Jesus, and, beginning from the first letter Aleph, said to Him: Answer.

6Mas Jesus ficou em silêncio e não respondeu nada.

6But Jesus was silent, and answered nothing.

7Portanto o preceptor Levi ficou irado, agarrou sua vara de estoraque e bateu-lhe na cabeça.

7Wherefore the preceptor Levi was angry, and seized his storax-tree rod, and struck Him on the head.

8E Jesus disse ao mestre Levi: Por que me bates? Você saberá na verdade que Aquele que é atingido pode ensinar aquele que O atinge mais do que Ele pode ser ensinado por ele.

8And Jesus said to the teacher Levi: Why dost thou strike me? Thou shalt know in truth, that He who is struck can teach him who strikes Him more than He can be taught by him.

9Pois posso lhe ensinar exatamente as coisas que você está dizendo.

9For I can teach you those very things that you are saying.

10Mas são cegos todos estes que falam e ouvem, como o soar do metal ou o tilintar do címbalo, nos quais não há percepção das coisas que seu som significa.

10But all these are blind who speak and hear, like sounding brass or tinkling cymbal, in which there is no perception of those things which are meant by their sound.

11E Jesus, além disso, disse a Zachyas: Cada carta de Aleph até mesmo para Thet é conhecida pela sua disposição.

11And Jesus in addition said to Zachyas: Every letter from Aleph even to Thet is known by its arrangement.

12Diga primeiro, portanto, o que é Thet, e eu lhe direi o que é Aleph.

12Say thou first, therefore, what Thet is, and I will tell thee what Aleph is.

13E novamente Jesus lhes disse: Aqueles que não conhecem Aleph, como podem dizer Thet, os hipócritas? Diga-me qual é o primeiro, Aleph; e então acreditarei em você quando você disser Beth.

13And again Jesus said to them: Those who do not know Aleph, how can they say Thet, the hypocrites? Tell me what the first one, Aleph, is; and I shall then believe you when you have said Beth.

14E Jesus começou a perguntar os nomes das letras uma por uma, e disse: Diga-nos o mestre da lei qual é a primeira letra, ou por que ela tem muitos triângulos, gradada, subaguda, mediata, obduzida, produzida, ereta, prostrada, curvada.

14And Jesus began to ask the names of the letters one by one, and said: Let the master of the law tell us what the first letter is, or why it has many triangles, gradate, subacute, mediate, obduced, produced, erect, prostrate, curvistrate.

15E quando Levi ouviu isso, ficou pasmo com tal disposição dos nomes das letras.

15And when Levi heard this, he was thunderstruck at such an arrangement of the names of the letters.

16Então ele começou a clamar aos ouvidos de todos e a dizer: Deveria tal pessoa viver na terra? Sim, ele deveria ser pendurado na grande cruz.

16Then he began in the hearing of all to cry out, and say: Ought such a one to live on the earth? Yea, he ought to be hung on the great cross.

17Pois ele pode apagar o fogo e zombar de outros modos de punição.

17For he can put out fire, and make sport of other modes of punishment.

18Acho que ele viveu antes do dilúvio e nasceu antes do dilúvio.

18I think that he lived before the flood, and was born before the deluge.

19Pois que ventre o gerou? ou que mãe o deu à luz? ou quais seios lhe deram mamada? Eu fujo diante dele; Não sou capaz de resistir às palavras de sua boca, mas meu coração fica surpreso ao ouvir tais palavras.

19For what womb bore him? or what mother brought him forth? or what breasts gave him suck? I flee before him; I am not able to withstand the words from his mouth, but my heart is astounded to hear such words.

20Não creio que qualquer homem possa entender o que ele diz, a menos que Deus esteja com ele.

20I do not think that any man can understand what he says, except God were with him.

21Agora eu, infeliz infeliz, me entreguei para ser motivo de chacota para ele.

21Now I, unfortunate wretch, have given myself up to be a laughing-stock to him.

22Pois quando pensei que tinha um estudioso, não o conhecendo, encontrei meu mestre.

22For when I thought I had a scholar, I, not knowing him, have found my master.

23O que devo dizer? Não posso resistir às palavras desta criança: agora fugirei desta cidade, porque não consigo compreendê-las.

23What shall I say? I cannot withstand the words of this child: I shall now flee from this town, because I cannot understand them.

24Um velho como eu foi espancado por um menino, porque não consigo encontrar nem começo nem fim do que ele diz.

24An old man like me has been beaten by a boy, because I can find neither beginning nor end of what he says.

25Pois não é fácil encontrar um começo para si mesmo.

25For it is no easy matter to find a beginning of himself.

26Digo-lhe com certeza, não estou mentindo, que aos meus olhos os procedimentos deste menino, o início de sua conversa e o resultado de sua intenção não parecem ter nada em comum com o homem mortal.

26I tell you of a certainty, I am not lying, that to my eyes the proceedings of this boy, the commencement of his conversation, and the upshot of his intention, seem to have nothing in common with mortal man.

27Aqui então não sei se ele é um mago ou um deus; ou pelo menos um anjo de Deus fala nele.

27Here then I do not know whether he be a wizard or a god; or at least an angel of God speaks in him.

28De onde ele é, ou de onde vem, ou quem ele será, eu não sei.

28Whence he is, or where he comes from, or who he will turn out to be, I know not.

29Então Jesus, sorrindo para ele com um semblante alegre, disse com voz de comando a todos os filhos de Israel que estavam ali e ouviam: Que os infrutíferos produzam frutos, e os cegos vejam, e os coxos andem corretamente, e os pobres desfrutem das coisas boas desta vida, e os mortos vivam, para que cada um possa retornar ao seu estado original, e permanecer Naquele que é a raiz da vida e da doçura perpétua.

29Then Jesus, smiling at him with a joyful countenance, said in a commanding voice to all the sons of Israel standing by and hearing: Let the unfruitful bring forth fruit, and the blind see, and the lame walk right, and the poor enjoy the good things of this life, and the dead live, that each may return to his original state, and abide in Him who is the root of life and of perpetual sweetness.

30E quando o menino Jesus disse isso, imediatamente todos os que haviam caído sob doenças malignas foram restaurados.

30And when the child Jesus had said this, forthwith all who had fallen under malignant diseases were restored.

31E não se atreveram a dizer mais nada a Ele, nem a ouvir nada Dele.

31And they did not dare to say anything more to Him, or to hear anything from Him.
