1Chapter.

2Ora, um certo professor judeu chamado Zaquias ouviu Jesus falar assim; e vendo que Ele não poderia ser vencido, por conhecer o poder que havia Nele, ele ficou irado e começou de maneira rude e tola, e sem medo, a falar contra José.

2Now a certain Jewish schoolmaster named Zachyas heard Jesus thus speaking; and seeing that He could not be overcome, from knowing the power that was in Him, he became angry, and began rudely and foolishly, and without fear, to speak against Joseph.

3E ele disse: Você não deseja confiar-me seu filho, para que ele seja instruído no aprendizado humano e na reverência? Mas vejo que Maria e você têm mais consideração por seu filho do que pelo que os anciãos do povo de Israel dizem contra ele.

3And he said: Dost thou not wish to entrust me with thy son, that he may be instructed in human learning and in reverence? But I see that Mary and thyself have more regard for your son than for what the elders of the people of Israel say against him.

4Você deveria ter dado mais honra a nós, os presbíteros de toda a igreja de Israel, tanto para que ele pudesse ter afeto mútuo com as crianças, quanto para que entre nós ele pudesse ser instruído no aprendizado judaico.

4You should have given more honour to us, the elders of the whole church of Israel, both that he might be on terms of mutual affection with the children, and that among us he might be instructed in Jewish learning.

5José, por outro lado, disse-lhe: E há alguém que possa ficar com este menino e ensiná-lo? Mas se você puder mantê-lo e ensiná-lo, de forma alguma o impediremos de aprender por você as coisas que são aprendidas por todos.

5Joseph, on the other hand, said to him: And is there any one who can keep this child, and teach him? But if thou canst keep him and teach him, we by no means hinder him from being taught by thee those things which are learned by all.

6E Jesus, tendo ouvido o que Zaquias havia dito, respondeu e disse-lhe: Os preceitos da lei de que acabaste de falar, e todas as coisas que mencionaste, devem ser guardados por aqueles que são instruídos na aprendizagem humana; mas sou um estranho nos seus tribunais, porque não tenho pai segundo a carne.

6And Jesus, having heard what Zachyas had said, answered and said unto him: The precepts of the law which thou hast just spoken of, and all the things that thou hast named, must be kept by those who are instructed in human learning; but I am a stranger to your law-courts, because I have no father after the flesh.

7Tu que lês a lei e és instruído nela, permanece na lei; mas eu estava perante a lei.

7Thou who readest the law, and art learned in it, abidest in the law; but I was before the law.

8Mas como você pensa que ninguém é igual a você no aprendizado, você será ensinado por mim, que nenhum outro pode ensinar nada além daquelas coisas que você nomeou.

8But since thou thinkest that no one is equal to thee in learning, thou shalt be taught by me, that no other can teach anything but those things which thou hast named.

9Mas só ele pode quem é digno.

9But he alone can who is worthy.

10Pois quando eu for exaltado na terra, farei cessar toda menção à sua genealogia.

10For when I shall be exalted on earth, I will cause to cease all mention of your genealogy.

11Pois você não sabe quando nasceu: só eu sei quando você nasceu e quanto tempo durará sua vida na terra.

11For thou knowest not when thou wast born: I alone know when you were born, and how long your life on earth will be.

12Então todos os que ouviram estas palavras ficaram surpresos e gritaram: Oh! oh! oh! este mistério maravilhosamente grande e maravilhoso.

12Then all who heard these words were struck with astonishment, and cried out: Oh! oh! oh! this marvellously great and wonderful mystery.

13Nunca ouvimos algo parecido! Nunca foi ouvido de ninguém, nem foi dito ou ouvido em qualquer momento pelos profetas, ou pelos fariseus, ou pelos escribas.

13Never have we heard the like! Never has it been heard from any one else, nor has it been said or at any time heard by the prophets, or the Pharisees, or the scribes.

14Sabemos de onde ele nasceu e ele mal tem cinco anos; e de onde ele fala essas palavras? Os fariseus responderam: Nunca ouvimos tais palavras proferidas por qualquer outra criança tão jovem.

14We know whence he is sprung, and he is scarcely five years old; and whence does he speak these words? The Pharisees answered: We have never heard such words spoken by any other child so young.

15E Jesus, respondendo, disse-lhes: Não vos admirais que tais coisas sejam ditas por uma criança? Por que, então, vocês não acreditam em mim nas coisas que eu lhes disse? E todos vocês se perguntam porque eu disse que sei quando vocês nasceram.

15And Jesus answered and said unto them: At this do ye wonder, that such things are said by a child? Why, then, do ye not believe me in those things which I have said to you? And you all wonder because I said to you that I know when you were born.

16Eu lhe direi coisas maiores, para que você possa se perguntar mais.

16I will tell you greater things, that you may wonder more.

17I have seen Abraham, whom you call your father, and have spoken with him; e ele me viu.

17I have seen Abraham, whom you call your father, and have spoken with him; and he has seen me.

18E quando ouviram isso, calaram-se e nenhum deles se atreveu a falar.

18And when they heard this they held their tongues, nor did any of them dare to speak.

19E Jesus lhes disse: Estive entre vós com crianças, e não me conhecestes; Falei convosco como a sábios, e não entendestes as minhas palavras; porque você é mais jovem do que eu e tem pouca fé.

19And Jesus said to them: I have been among you with children, and you have not known me; I have spoken to you as to wise men, and you have not understood my words; because you are younger than I am, and of little faith.
