1Chapter.

2E aconteceu que, na hora da festa, entre os que ofereciam incenso ao Senhor, Joaquim estava preparando as suas ofertas diante do Senhor.

2And it happened that, in the time of the feast, among those who were offering incense to the Lord, Joachim stood getting ready his gifts in the sight of the Lord.

3E o sacerdote, de nome Ruben, aproximando-se dele, disse: Não te é lícito estar entre os que oferecem sacrifícios a Deus, porque Deus não te abençoou para te dar descendência em Israel.

3And the priest, Ruben by name, coming to him, said: It is not lawful for thee to stand among those who are doing sacrifice to God, because God has not blessed thee so as to give thee seed in Israel.

4Sendo, portanto, envergonhado à vista do povo, ele retirou-se do templo do Senhor chorando e não voltou para sua casa, mas foi para seus rebanhos, levando consigo seus pastores para as montanhas, para um país distante, de modo que durante cinco meses sua esposa Ana não pôde ouvir notícias dele.

4Being therefore put to shame in the sight of the people, he retired from the temple of the Lord weeping, and did not return to his house, but went to his flocks, taking with him his shepherds into the mountains to a far country, so that for five months his wife Anna could hear no tidings of him.

5E ela orou com lágrimas, dizendo: Ó Senhor, Deus Poderoso de Israel, por que, visto que ainda não me deste filhos, tiraste de mim também meu marido? Eis que já faz cinco meses que não vejo meu marido; e não sei onde ele está; nem, se eu soubesse que ele estava morto, poderia enterrá-lo.

5And she prayed with tears, saying: O Lord, most mighty God of Israel, why hast Thou, seeing that already Thou hast not given me children, taken from me my husband also? Behold, now five months that I have not seen my husband; and I know not where he is tarrying; nor, if I knew him to be dead, could I bury him.

6E enquanto ela chorava excessivamente, ela entrou no pátio de Sua casa; e ela caiu com o rosto em terra em oração e derramou suas súplicas diante do Senhor.

6And while she wept excessively, she entered into the court of His house; and she fell on her face in prayer, and poured out her supplications before the Lord.

7Depois disso, levantando-se de sua oração e levantando os olhos para Deus, ela viu um ninho de pardal em um loureiro, e pronunciou sua voz ao Senhor com gemidos, e disse: Senhor Deus Todo-Poderoso, que deste descendência a todas as criaturas, aos animais selvagens e domesticados, às serpentes, e aos pássaros, e aos peixes, e todos eles se regozijam com seus filhotes, Tu só me excluiu do dom de Tua benignidade.

7After this, rising from her prayer, and lifting her eyes to God, she saw a sparrow's nest in a laurel tree, and uttered her voice to the Lord with groaning, and said: Lord God Almighty, who hast given offspring to every creature, to beasts wild and tame, to serpents, and birds, and fishes, and they all rejoice over their young ones, Thou hast shut out me alone from the gift of Thy benignity.

8Pois Tu, ó Deus, conheces meu coração, que desde o início de minha vida de casado jurei que, se Tu, ó Deus, me desse um filho ou uma filha, eu os ofereceria a Ti em Teu santo templo.

8For Thou, O God, knowest my heart, that from the beginning of my married life I have vowed that, if Thou, O God, shouldst give me son or daughter, I would offer them to Thee in Thy holy temple.

9E enquanto ela falava assim, de repente um anjo do Senhor apareceu diante dela, dizendo: Não tenha medo, Ana, pois há semente para você no decreto de Deus; e todas as gerações, até o fim, se maravilharão com aquilo que nascerá de ti.

9And while she was thus speaking, suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared before her, saying: Be not afraid, Anna, for there is seed for thee in the decree of God; and all generations even to the end shall wonder at that which shall be born of thee.

10E quando ele falou assim, ele desapareceu da vista dela.

10And when he had thus spoken, he vanished out of her sight.

11Mas ela, com medo e pavor por ter visto tal visão e ouvido tais palavras, finalmente entrou em seu quarto e se jogou na cama como se estivesse morta.

11But she, in fear and dread because she had seen such a sight, and heard such words, at length went into her bed-chamber, and threw herself on the bed as if dead.

12E durante um dia e uma noite inteira ela permaneceu em grande tremor e em oração.

12And for a whole day and night she remained in great trembling and in prayer.

13E depois destas coisas chamou a sua serva e disse-lhe: Vês-me enganado na minha viuvez e em grande perplexidade, e não quiseste vir ter comigo? Então ela, com um leve murmúrio, respondeu e disse: Se Deus fechou o teu ventre e tirou de ti o teu marido, o que posso fazer por ti? E quando Anna ouviu isso, ela levantou a voz e chorou alto.

13And after these things she called to her her servant, and said to her: Dost thou see me deceived in my widowhood and in great perplexity, and hast thou been unwilling to come in to me? Then she, with a slight murmur, thus answered and said: If God hath shut up thy womb, and hath taken away thy husband from thee, what can I do for thee? And when Anna heard this, she lifted up her voice, and wept aloud.
