Evangelho do Pseudo-Mateus 14

1Capítulo.

1Chapter.

2E aconteceu pouco tempo depois que foi feito um alistamento de acordo com o edito de César Augusto, que todo o mundo deveria ser alistado, cada homem em sua terra natal.

2And it came to pass some little time after, that an enrolment was made according to the edict of Caesar Augustus, that all the world was to be enrolled, each man in his native place.

3Esta inscrição foi feita por Cirino, governador da Síria.

3This enrolment was made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria.

4Era necessário, portanto, que José se matriculasse com a bem-aventurada Maria em Belém, porque a ela pertenciam, sendo da tribo de Judá, e da casa e família de Davi.

4It was necessary, therefore, that Joseph should enrol with the blessed Mary in Bethlehem, because to it they belonged, being of the tribe of Judah, and of the house and family of David.

5Quando, pois, José e a bem-aventurada Maria caminhavam pelo caminho que leva a Belém, Maria disse a José: Vejo dois povos diante de mim, um chorando e o outro exultante.

5When, therefore, Joseph and the blessed Mary were going along the road which leads to Bethlehem, Mary said to Joseph: I see two peoples before me, the one weeping, and the other rejoicing.

6E José respondeu: Senta-te quieto na tua besta e não fales palavras supérfluas.

6And Joseph answered: Sit still on thy beast, and do not speak superfluous words.

7Então apareceu diante deles um lindo menino, vestido de branco, que disse a José: Por que disseste que as palavras que Maria falou sobre os dois povos eram supérfluas? Porque ela viu o povo dos judeus chorando, porque se afastaram do seu Deus; e o povo dos gentios regozijando-se, porque agora foram acrescentados e aproximados do Senhor, de acordo com o que Ele prometeu a nossos pais Abraão, Isaque e Jacó: pois está próximo o tempo em que na descendência de Abraão todas as nações serão abençoadas.

7Then there appeared before them a beautiful boy, clothed in white raiment, who said to Joseph: Why didst thou say that the words which Mary spoke about the two peoples were superfluous? For she saw the people of the Jews weeping, because they have departed from their God; and the people of the Gentiles rejoicing, because they have now been added and made near to the Lord, according to that which He promised to our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for the time is at hand when in the seed of Abraham all nations shall be blessed.

8E quando ele disse isso, o anjo ordenou que a besta ficasse de pé, pois o tempo em que ela deveria dar à luz estava próximo; e ordenou à bem-aventurada Maria que descesse do animal e fosse para um recesso sob uma caverna, onde nunca havia luz, mas sempre escuridão, porque a luz do dia não conseguia alcançá-la.

8And when he had thus said, the angel ordered the beast to stand, for the time when she should bring forth was at hand; and he commanded the blessed Mary to come down off the animal, and go into a recess under a cavern, in which there never was light, but always darkness, because the light of day could not reach it.

9E quando a bem-aventurada Maria entrou nele, começou a brilhar com tanto brilho como se fosse a sexta hora do dia.

9And when the blessed Mary had gone into it, it began to shine with as much brightness as if it were the sixth hour of the day.

10A luz de Deus brilhou tanto na caverna que nem de dia nem de noite faltou luz enquanto a bem-aventurada Maria estava lá.

10The light from God so shone in the cave, that neither by day nor night was light wanting as long as the blessed Mary was there.

11E ali ela deu à luz um filho, e os anjos O cercaram quando Ele estava nascendo.

11And there she brought forth a son, and the angels surrounded Him when He was being born.

12E assim que nasceu, pôs-se de pé, e os anjos O adoraram, dizendo: Glória a Deus nas alturas, e paz na terra aos homens de boa vontade.

12And as soon as He was born, He stood upon His feet, and the angels adored Him, saying: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good pleasure.

13Agora, quando o nascimento do Senhor estava próximo, José partiu em busca de parteiras.

13Now, when the birth of the Lord was at hand, Joseph had gone away to seek midwives.

14E quando os encontrou, voltou à caverna e encontrou com Maria o bebê que ela havia dado à luz.

14And when he had found them, he returned to the cave, and found with Mary the infant which she had brought forth.

15E José disse à bem-aventurada Maria: Trouxe-te duas parteiras - Zelomi e Salomé; e eles estão do lado de fora, diante da entrada da caverna, não ousando entrar aqui, por causa da claridade excessiva.

15And Joseph said to the blessed Mary: I have brought thee two midwives—Zelomi and Salome; and they are standing outside before the entrance to the cave, not daring to come in hither, because of the exceeding brightness.

16E quando a bem-aventurada Maria ouviu isso, sorriu; e José lhe disse: Não sorria; mas prudentemente permita que eles te visitem, caso você precise deles para sua cura.

16And when the blessed Mary heard this, she smiled; and Joseph said to her: Do not smile; but prudently allow them to visit thee, in case thou shouldst require them for thy cure.

17Então ela ordenou que eles entrassem.

17Then she ordered them to enter.

18E quando Zelomi entrou, tendo Salomé ficado lá fora, Zelomi disse a Maria: Deixa-me tocar-te.

18And when Zelomi had come in, Salome having stayed without, Zelomi said to Mary: Allow me to touch thee.

19E quando ela permitiu que ela fizesse um exame, a parteira gritou em alta voz e disse: Senhor, Senhor Todo-Poderoso, tenha piedade de nós! Nunca se ouviu falar ou se pensou que alguém deveria ter os seios cheios de leite e que o nascimento de um filho deveria mostrar que sua mãe era virgem.

19And when she had permitted her to make an examination, the midwife cried out with a loud voice, and said: Lord, Lord Almighty, mercy on us! It has never been heard or thought of, that any one should have her breasts full of milk, and that the birth of a son should show his mother to be a virgin.

20Mas não houve derramamento de sangue em seu nascimento, nem dor em trazê-lo à luz.

20But there has been no spilling of blood in his birth, no pain in bringing him forth.

21Uma virgem concebeu, uma virgem deu à luz e permanece virgem.

21A virgin has conceived, a virgin has brought forth, and a virgin she remains.

22E ouvindo estas palavras, Salomé disse: Permita-me lidar com você e provar se Zelomi falou a verdade.

22And hearing these words, Salome said: Allow me to handle thee, and prove whether Zelomi have spoken the truth.

23E a bem-aventurada Maria permitiu que ela cuidasse dela.

23And the blessed Mary allowed her to handle her.

24E quando ela retirou a mão de tocá-la, ela secou e, devido ao excesso de dor, ela começou a chorar amargamente e a ficar muito angustiada, clamando e dizendo: Ó Senhor Deus, Tu sabes que sempre Te temi, e que sem recompensa cuidei de todos os pobres; Nada tomei da viúva e do órfão, e não mandei embora vazios os necessitados.

24And when she had withdrawn her hand from handling her, it dried up, and through excess of pain she began to weep bitterly, and to be in great distress, crying out, and saying: O Lord God, Thou knowest that I have always feared Thee, and that without recompense I have cared for all the poor; I have taken nothing from the widow and the orphan, and the needy have I not sent empty away.

25E eis que estou infeliz por causa da minha incredulidade, pois sem motivo desejei provar a Tua virgem.

25And, behold, I am made wretched because of mine unbelief, since without a cause I wished to try Thy virgin.

26E enquanto ela falava assim, apareceu ao lado dela um jovem com roupas brilhantes, dizendo: Vá até a criança, e adore-O, e toque-O com a mão, e Ele te curará, porque Ele é o Salvador do mundo, e de todos os que nele esperam.

26And while she was thus speaking, there stood by her a young man in shining garments, saying: Go to the child, and adore Him, and touch Him with thy hand, and He will heal thee, because He is the Saviour of the world, and of all that hope in Him.

27E ela foi até o menino com pressa, e o adorou, e tocou a orla dos panos em que Ele estava envolto, e instantaneamente sua mão ficou curada.

27And she went to the child with haste, and adored Him, and touched the fringe of the cloths in which He was wrapped, and instantly her hand was cured.

28E saindo, ela começou a chorar em voz alta e a contar as coisas maravilhosas que tinha visto, e que havia sofrido, e como havia sido curada; de modo que muitos através de suas declarações acreditaram.

28And going forth, she began to cry aloud, and to tell the wonderful things which she had seen, and which she had suffered, and how she had been cured; so that many through her statements believed.

29E alguns pastores também afirmaram ter visto anjos cantando um hino à meia-noite, louvando e abençoando o Deus do céu, e dizendo: Nasceu o Salvador de todos, que é Cristo, o Senhor, em quem a salvação será trazida de volta a Israel.

29And some shepherds also affirmed that they had seen angels singing a hymn at midnight, praising and blessing the God of heaven, and saying: There has been born the Saviour of all, who is Christ the Lord, in whom salvation shall be brought back to Israel.

30Além disso, uma grande estrela, maior do que qualquer outra já vista desde o início do mundo, brilhou sobre a caverna desde a tarde até de manhã.

30Moreover, a great star, larger than any that had been seen since the beginning of the world, shone over the cave from the evening till the morning.

31E os profetas que estavam em Jerusalém disseram que esta estrela apontava o nascimento de Cristo, que deveria restaurar a promessa não só a Israel, mas a todas as nações.

31And the prophets who were in Jerusalem said that this star pointed out the birth of Christ, who should restore the promise not only to Israel, but to all nations.
