2Depois destas coisas surgiu uma grande notícia de que Maria estava grávida.

2After these things there arose a great report that Mary was with child.

3E José foi preso pelos oficiais do templo e levado com Maria ao sumo sacerdote.

3And Joseph was seized by the officers of the temple, and brought along with Mary to the high priest.

4E ele e os sacerdotes começaram a repreendê-lo e a dizer: Por que enganaste uma virgem tão grande e tão gloriosa, que foi alimentada como uma pomba no templo pelos anjos de Deus, que nunca desejou ver ou ter um homem, que tivesse o mais excelente conhecimento da lei de Deus? Se você não tivesse feito violência contra ela, ela ainda teria permanecido em sua virgindade.

4And he with the priests began to reproach him, and to say: Why hast thou beguiled so great and so glorious a virgin, who was fed like a dove in the temple by the angels of God, who never wished either to see or to have a man, who had the most excellent knowledge of the law of God? If thou hadst not done violence to her, she would still have remained in her virginity.

5E Joseph jurou e jurou que nunca havia tocado nela.

5And Joseph vowed, and swore that he had never touched her at all.

6E Abiatar, o sumo sacerdote, respondeu-lhe: Vive o Senhor, que te darei de beber da água de beber do Senhor, e imediatamente o teu pecado aparecerá.

6And Abiathar the high priest answered him: As the Lord liveth, I will give thee to drink of the water of drinking of the Lord, and immediately thy sin will appear.

7Então reuniu-se uma multidão que não podia ser contada, e Maria foi levada ao templo.

7Then was assembled a multitude of people which could not be numbered, and Mary was brought to the temple.

8E os sacerdotes, e seus parentes, e seus pais choraram, e disseram a Maria: Confessa aos sacerdotes o teu pecado, tu que eras como uma pomba no templo de Deus, e recebeste alimento das mãos de um anjo.

8And the priests, and her relatives, and her parents wept, and said to Mary: Confess to the priests thy sin, thou that wast like a dove in the temple of God, and didst receive food from the hands of an angel.

9E novamente José foi chamado ao altar, e a água de beber do Senhor lhe foi dada para beber.

9And again Joseph was summoned to the altar, and the water of drinking of the Lord was given him to drink.

10E quando alguém que havia mentido bebia desta água, e andava sete vezes ao redor do altar, Deus costumava mostrar algum sinal em seu rosto.

10And when any one that had lied drank this water, and walked seven times round the altar, God used to show some sign in his face.

11Quando, portanto, José bebeu em segurança e deu sete voltas ao redor do altar, nenhum sinal de pecado apareceu nele.

11When, therefore, Joseph had drunk in safety, and had walked round the altar seven times, no sign of sin appeared in him.

12Então todos os sacerdotes, e os oficiais, e o povo o justificaram, dizendo: Bem-aventurado és tu, visto que nenhuma acusação foi achada boa contra ti.

12Then all the priests, and the officers, and the people justified him, saying: Blessed art thou, seeing that no charge has been found good against thee.

13E eles chamaram Maria e disseram: E que desculpa você pode ter? ou que sinal maior pode aparecer em ti do que a concepção do teu ventre, que te trai? Só isto exigimos de ti: que, sendo José puro em relação a ti, confesses quem te enganou.

13And they summoned Mary, and said: And what excuse canst thou have? or what greater sign can appear in thee than the conception of thy womb, which betrays thee? This only we require of thee, that since Joseph is pure regarding thee, thou confess who it is that has beguiled thee.

14Pois é melhor que a tua confissão te traia, do que que a ira de Deus deixe uma marca no teu rosto e te exponha no meio do povo.

14For it is better that thy confession should betray thee, than that the wrath of God should set a mark on thy face, and expose thee in the midst of the people.

15Então Maria disse, com firmeza e sem tremer: Ó Senhor Deus, Rei sobre todos, que conheces todos os segredos, se houver em mim alguma poluição, ou algum pecado, ou qualquer desejo maligno, ou falta de castidade, expõe-me à vista de todas as pessoas, e faze-me um exemplo de punição para todos.

15Then Mary said, stedfastly and without trembling: O Lord God, King over all, who knowest all secrets, if there be any pollution in me, or any sin, or any evil desires, or unchastity, expose me in the sight of all the people, and make me an example of punishment to all.

16Assim dizendo, ela subiu corajosamente ao altar do Senhor, e bebeu a água de beber, e andou sete vezes ao redor do altar, e nenhuma mancha foi encontrada nela.

16Thus saying, she went up to the altar of the Lord boldly, and drank the water of drinking, and walked round the altar seven times, and no spot was found in her.

17E quando todo o povo ficou extremamente surpreso, vendo que ela estava grávida e que nenhum sinal havia aparecido em seu rosto, começaram a ficar perturbados entre si por declarações conflitantes: alguns disseram que ela era santa e imaculada, outros que ela era má e contaminada.

17And when all the people were in the utmost astonishment, seeing that she was with child, and that no sign had appeared in her face, they began to be disturbed among themselves by conflicting statements: some said that she was holy and unspotted, others that she was wicked and defiled.

18Então Maria, vendo que o povo ainda suspeitava dela, e que por esse motivo ela não lhes parecia totalmente inocentada, disse aos ouvidos de todos, em alta voz: Como vive o Senhor Adonai, o Senhor dos Exércitos diante de quem estou, não conheci homem algum; mas sou conhecido por Aquele a quem desde a mais tenra idade me dediquei.

18Then Mary, seeing that she was still suspected by the people, and that on that account she did not seem to them to be wholly cleared, said in the hearing of all, with a loud voice, As the Lord Adonai liveth, the Lord of Hosts before whom I stand, I have not known man; but I am known by Him to whom from my earliest years I have devoted myself.

19E este voto fiz ao meu Deus desde a minha infância, de que permaneceria imaculado Naquele que me criou, e confio que viverei somente para Ele e servirei somente a Ele; e Nele, enquanto eu viver, permanecerei imaculado.

19And this vow I made to my God from my infancy, that I should remain unspotted in Him who created me, and I trust that I shall so live to Him alone, and serve Him alone; and in Him, as long as I shall live, will I remain unpolluted.

20Então todos começaram a beijar-lhe os pés e a abraçar-lhe os joelhos, pedindo-lhe que os perdoasse pelas suas perversas suspeitas.

20Then they all began to kiss her feet and to embrace her knees, asking her to pardon them for their wicked suspicions.

21E ela foi conduzida para sua casa com exultação e alegria pelo povo, e pelos sacerdotes, e por todas as virgens.

21And she was led down to her house with exultation and joy by the people, and the priests, and all the virgins.

22E eles clamaram e disseram: Bendito seja o nome do Senhor para sempre, porque ele manifestou a tua santidade a todo o seu povo Israel.

22And they cried out, and said: Blessed be the name of the Lord for ever, because He hath manifested thy holiness to all His people Israel.
