1Chapter.

2E no segundo dia, enquanto Maria estava junto à fonte para encher o seu cântaro, o anjo do Senhor apareceu-lhe, dizendo: Bendita és tu, Maria; porque em teu ventre preparaste uma habitação para o Senhor.

2And on the second day, while Mary was at the fountain to fill her pitcher, the angel of the Lord appeared to her, saying: Blessed art thou, Mary; for in thy womb thou hast prepared an habitation for the Lord.

3Pois eis que a luz do céu virá e habitará em ti, e por meio de ti brilhará sobre o mundo inteiro.

3For, lo, the light from heaven shall come and dwell in thee, and by means of thee will shine over the whole world.

4Novamente, no terceiro dia, enquanto ela trabalhava na púrpura com os dedos, entrou um jovem de inefável beleza.

4Again, on the third day, while she was working at the purple with her fingers, there entered a young man of ineffable beauty.

5E quando Maria o viu, ela teve muito medo e tremeu.

5And when Mary saw him, she exceedingly feared and trembled.

6E ele lhe disse: Ave, Maria, cheia de graça; o Senhor é contigo: bendita és tu entre as mulheres, e bendito é o fruto do teu ventre.

6And he said to her: Hail, Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

7E quando ela ouviu essas palavras, ela estremeceu e ficou com muito medo.

7And when she heard these words, she trembled, and was exceedingly afraid.

8Então o anjo do Senhor acrescentou: Não temas, Maria; porque achaste graça diante de Deus: Eis que conceberás em teu ventre e darás à luz um Rei que encherá não apenas a terra, mas também o céu, e que reina de geração em geração.

8Then the angel of the Lord added: Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favour with God: Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a King, who fills not only the earth, but the heaven, and who reigns from generation to generation.
