Provérbios 20

1O vinho é escarnecedor, a bebida forte alvoroçadora; e todo aquele que neles errar nunca será sábio.

1Wine {is} a mocker, strong drink {is} raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

2Como o rugido do leão é o terror do rei; o que o provoca à ira peca contra a sua própria alma.

2The fear of a king {is} as the roaring of a lion: {whoso} provoketh him to anger sinneth {against} his own soul.

3Honroso é para o homem desviar-se de questões, mas todo tolo é intrometido.

3{It is} an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

4O preguiçoso não lavrará por causa do inverno, pelo que mendigará na sega, mas nada receberá.

4The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; {therefore} shall he beg in harvest, and {have} nothing. {cold: or, winter}

5Como as águas profundas é o conselho no coração do homem; mas o homem de inteligência o trará para fora.

5Counsel in the heart of man {is like} deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

6A multidão dos homens apregoa a sua própria bondade, porém o homem fidedigno quem o achará?

6Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find? {goodness: or, bounty}

7O justo anda na sua sinceridade; bem-aventurados serão os seus filhos depois dele.

7The just {man} walketh in his integrity: his children {are} blessed after him.

8Assentando-se o rei no trono do juízo, com os seus olhos dissipa todo o mal.

8A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

9Quem poderá dizer: Purifiquei o meu coração, limpo estou de meu pecado?

9Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

10Dois pesos diferentes e duas espécies de medida são abominação ao Senhor, tanto um como outro.

10Divers weights, {and} divers measures, both of them {are} alike abomination to the LORD. {Divers weights: Heb. A stone and a stone} {divers measures: Heb. an ephah and an ephah}

11Até a criança se dará a conhecer pelas suas ações, se a sua obra é pura e reta.

11Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work {be} pure, and whether {it be} right.

12O ouvido que ouve, e o olho que vê, o Senhor os fez a ambos.

12The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

13Não ames o sono, para que não empobreças; abre os teus olhos, e te fartarás de pão.

13Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, {and} thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

14Nada vale, nada vale, dirá o comprador, mas, indo-se, então se gabará.

14{It is} naught, {it is} naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

15Há ouro e abundância de rubis, mas os lábios do conhecimento são jóia preciosa.

15There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge {are} a precious jewel.

16Ficando alguém por fiador de um estranho, tome-se-lhe a roupa; e por penhor àquele que se obriga pela mulher estranha.

16Take his garment that is surety {for} a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

17Suave é ao homem o pão da mentira, mas depois a sua boca se encherá de cascalho.

17Bread of deceit {is} sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. {deceit: Heb. lying, or, falsehood}

18Cada pensamento se confirma com conselho e com bons conselhos se faz a guerra.

18{Every} purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

19O que anda tagarelando revela o segredo; não te intrometas com o que lisonjeia com os seus lábios.

19He that goeth about {as} a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips. {flattereth: or, enticeth}

20O que amaldiçoa seu pai ou sua mãe, apagar-se-á a sua lâmpada em negras trevas.

20Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. {lamp: or, candle}

21A herança que no princípio é adquirida às pressas, no fim não será abençoada.

21An inheritance {may be} gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

22Não digas: Vingar-me-ei do mal; espera pelo Senhor, e ele te livrará.

22Say not thou, I will recompense evil; {but} wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

23Pesos diferentes são abomináveis ao Senhor, e balança enganosa não é boa.

23Divers weights {are} an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance {is} not good. {a false...: Heb. balance of deceit}

24Os passos do homem são dirigidos pelo Senhor; como, pois, entenderá o homem o seu caminho?

24Man's goings {are} of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

25Laço é para o homem apropriar-se do que é santo, e só refletir depois de feitos os votos.

25{It is} a snare to the man {who} devoureth {that which is} holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

26O rei sábio dispersa os ímpios e faz passar sobre eles a roda.

26A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

27O espírito do homem é a lâmpada do Senhor, que esquadrinha todo o interior até o mais íntimo do ventre.

27The spirit of man {is} the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly. {candle: or, lamp}

28Benignidade e verdade guardam ao rei, e com benignidade sustém ele o seu trono.

28Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

29A glória do jovem é a sua força; e a beleza dos velhos são as cãs.

29The glory of young men {is} their strength: and the beauty of old men {is} the gray head.

30Os vergões das feridas são a purificação dos maus, como também as pancadas que penetram até o mais íntimo do ventre.

30The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so {do} stripes the inward parts of the belly. {cleanseth...: Heb. is a purging medicine against}
