Protoevangelho de Tiago 8

1Saíram, então, seus pais, cheios de admiração, louvando ao Senhor Deus porque a menina não havia olhado para trás. E Maria permaneceu no templo como uma pombinha, recebendo alimento pelas mãos de um anjo.

1Then her parents left, full of admiration, praising the Lord God because the girl had not looked back. And Mary remained in the temple like a dove, receiving food from the hands of an angel.

2Mas, ao completar doze anos, os sacerdotes reuniram-se para deliberar, dizendo: 'Eis que Maria cumpriu doze anos no templo do Senhor. Que faremos para que ela não chegue a manchar ao santuário?'

2But, when she completed twelve years, the priests gathered to deliberate, saying: 'Behold, Mary has completed twelve years in the temple of the Lord. What shall we do so that she may not come to defile the sanctuary?'

3E o sumo sacerdote, cingindo-se com o manto das doze sinetas, entrou no santo dos santos e orou por ela. Mas eis que um anjo do Senhor apareceu, dizendo-lhe: 'Zacarias, Zacarias, sai e reúne a todos os viúvos do povoado. Que cada um venha com um bastão, e o daquele em que o Senhor fizer um sinal singular, deste será ela esposa.'

3And the high priest, girding himself with the robe of twelve bells, entered the holy of holies and prayed for her. But behold an angel of the Lord appeared, saying to him: 'Zechariah, Zechariah, go out and gather all the widowers of the town. Let each one come with a staff, and he in whom the Lord shall make a singular sign, of him she shall be the spouse.'
