Protoevangelho de Tiago 24

1E os sacerdotes se reuniram à hora da saudação; mas Zacarias não saiu a seu encontro, como de costume, para abençoá-los. E se puseram a esperá-lo para o saudar na oração.

1And the priests gathered at the hour of greeting; but Zechariah did not come out to meet them, as was his custom, to bless them. And they waited for him to greet him in prayer.

2Ante sua demora, começaram a ter medo; e, tomando ânimo, um deles entrou e viu ao lado do altar sangue coagulado e ouviu uma voz que dizia: 'Zacarias foi morto e não se limpará o seu sangue até que chegue o vingador.'

2Given his delay, they began to fear; and, taking courage, one of them entered and saw beside the altar coagulated blood and heard a voice that said: 'Zechariah has been killed and his blood shall not be cleansed until the avenger comes.'

3Estes, tomando coragem, entraram e testemunharam o ocorrido. Então, os frisos do templo rangeram e eles rasgaram suas vestes de alto a baixo. Mas não encontraram seu corpo, somente uma poça de sangue coagulado.

3They, taking courage, entered and witnessed what had happened. Then the cornices of the temple creaked and they tore their garments from top to bottom. But they did not find his body, only a pool of coagulated blood.

4E, concluído esse tempo, reuniram-se os sacerdotes para deliberar sobre quem iriam pôr em seu lugar. Recaiu a sorte sobre Simeão, pois, pelo Espírito Santo, havia sido assegurado de que não veria a morte até que lhe fosse dado contemplar o Messias Encarnado.

4And, that time concluded, the priests gathered to deliberate about whom they would put in his place. The lot fell upon Simeon, for he had been assured by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he was allowed to behold the Messiah Incarnate.
