Protoevangelho de Tiago 23

1Mas Herodes prosseguia na busca de João, e enviou seus emissários a Zacarias para que lhe dissessem: 'Aonde escondeste teu filho?' Mas ele respondeu: 'Eu me ocupo do serviço de Deus e me encontro sempre no templo. Não sei onde está meu filho.'

1But Herod continued in the search for John, and sent his emissaries to Zechariah to say to him: 'Where have you hidden your son?' But he answered: 'I am engaged in the service of God and I am always in the temple. I do not know where my son is.'

2Os emissários informaram a Herodes tudo o que se passara, e ele encolerizou-se muito, dizendo consigo mesmo: 'Deve ser seu filho que vai reinar em Israel.'

2The emissaries informed Herod of everything that had happened, and he became very angry, saying to himself: 'It must be his son who will reign in Israel.'

3Mas Zacarias respondeu: 'Serei mártir do Senhor se te atreveres a derramar meu sangue, porque minha alma será recolhida pelo Senhor ao ser segada uma vida inocente.' E ao romper da aurora foi assassinado Zacarias.

3But Zechariah answered: 'I will be a martyr of the Lord if you dare to shed my blood, because my soul will be gathered by the Lord when an innocent life is cut down.' And at the break of dawn Zechariah was murdered.
