Protoevangelho de Tiago 17

1E veio uma ordem do imperador Augusto para que se fizesse o censo de todos os habitantes de Belém da Judéia. E disse José: 'A meus filhos posso recensear, mas que farei desta donzela?'

1And there came an order from the Emperor Augustus that a census be made of all the inhabitants of Bethlehem of Judea. And Joseph said: 'I can register my children, but what shall I do with this maiden?'

2E, selando sua asna, fez com que Maria se acomodasse sobre ela, enquanto um de seus filhos ia à frente puxando o animal pelo cabresto.

2And, saddling his donkey, he had Mary seat herself upon it, while one of his sons went ahead pulling the animal by the halter.

3E, ao chegar à metade do caminho, disse Maria a José: 'Desça-me, porque o fruto de minhas entranhas luta por vir à luz.' E ele ajudou-a a apear da asna, dizendo-lhe: 'Aonde poderia eu levar-te para resguardar teu pudor, já que estamos em campo aberto?'

3And, upon reaching the middle of the journey, Mary said to Joseph: 'Take me down, because the fruit of my womb is struggling to come forth.' And he helped her dismount from the donkey, saying to her: 'Where could I take you to shelter your modesty, since we are in open country?'
