Protoevangelho de Tiago 1

1Nas histórias das doze tribos de Israel, conta-se que havia um homem muito rico chamado Joaquim, o qual oferecia ao Senhor oferendas em dobro, dizendo consigo mesmo: 'O que me sobra será para todo o povo, e o que devo por meus pecados será para o Senhor, como propiciação em meu favor.'

1In the histories of the twelve tribes of Israel, it is told that there was a very rich man named Joachim, who offered to the Lord offerings in double, saying to himself: 'What I have left over shall be for all the people, and what I owe for my sins shall be for the Lord, as a propitiation in my favor.'

2Chegou, porém, a grande festa do Senhor, na qual os filhos de Israel costumavam oferecer suas dádivas, e eis que Rubem se apresentou diante de Joaquim, dizendo: 'Não te é permitido oferecer primeiro tua oferta, porque não tiveste descendência em Israel.'

2However, the great feast of the Lord came, in which the children of Israel used to offer their gifts, and behold Reuben presented himself before Joachim, saying: 'It is not permitted for you to offer your offering first, because you have had no offspring in Israel.'

3Joaquim, então, ficou muito triste, foi consultar os registros das doze tribos do povo, pois pensava: 'Vou consultar os registros de Israel para saber se sou o único a não ter descendência.' Ao procurar, constatou que todos os justos tinham tido filhos em Israel. E lembrou-se do patriarca Abraão, ao qual o nosso Senhor Deus, em seus últimos dias, havia concedido um filho, Isaac.

3Joachim, then, became very sad, went to consult the records of the twelve tribes of the people, for he thought: 'I will consult the records of Israel to know if I am the only one without offspring.' Upon searching, he found that all the righteous had had children in Israel. And he remembered the patriarch Abraham, to whom our Lord God, in his last days, had granted a son, Isaac.

4E Joaquim ficou muito angustiado e, sem dizer nada à esposa, retirou-se ao deserto e aí armou sua tenda. E passou quarenta dias e quarenta noites jejuando, dizendo a si mesmo: 'Não descerei nem por comida, nem por bebida, até que o Senhor meu Deus me visite; e a oração será minha comida e minha bebida.'

4And Joachim was greatly distressed and, without saying anything to his wife, withdrew to the desert and there pitched his tent. And he spent forty days and forty nights fasting, saying to himself: 'I will not go down either for food or for drink, until the Lord my God visits me; and prayer shall be my food and my drink.'
