1Admitamos, então, que todas erraram; que o apóstolo se enganou ao testemunhar; que o Espírito Santo não considerou nenhuma igreja digna de ser guiada à verdade, embora Cristo o tenha enviado para esse fim e pedido ao Pai que fosse mestre da verdade. Admitamos também que ele, administrador de Deus e vigário de Cristo,

2negligenciou seu ofício, permitindo por algum tempo que as igrejas entendessem e cressem de maneira diversa daquilo que ele próprio pregava pelos apóstolos. É provável que tantas e tão grandes igrejas tenham caído todas no mesmo erro de fé? Um acaso distribuído entre muitos homens não produz o mesmo resultado. Um erro doutrinário nas igrejas teria necessariamente gerado resultados diversos. Mas, quando se encontra a mesma coisa depositada entre muitos, isso não resulta de erro, e sim da tradição. Quem seria, pois, imprudente a ponto de dizer que erraram aqueles que transmitiram a tradição?

2neglected His office, permitting the churches for a time to understand differently, (and) to believe differently, what He Himself was preaching by the apostles,--is it likely that so many churches, and they so great, should have gone astray into one and the same faith? No casualty distributed among many men issues in one and the same result. Error of doctrine in the churches must necessarily have produced various issues. When, however, that which is deposited among many is found to be one and the same, it is not the result of error, but of tradition. Can any one, then, be reckless enough to say that they were in error who handed on the tradition?
