1Nosso recurso, portanto, não deve ser às Escrituras; tampouco se deve admitir uma controvérsia sobre pontos nos quais a vitória será impossível, incerta ou insuficientemente certa. Mesmo que uma discussão baseada nas Escrituras não terminasse por colocar as duas partes em pé de igualdade, a ordem natural exigiria propor primeiro a única questão que agora devemos discutir: ‘Com quem está a fé à qual pertencem as Escrituras? De onde, por meio de quem, quando e a quem foi transmitida a regra pela qual os homens se tornam cristãos?’ Pois onde se manifestar a verdadeira regra e a verdadeira fé cristã,
