1Paulo a Sêneca e a Lucílio, saudações. Do assunto sobre o qual me escrevestes não devo falar com pena e tinta, das quais a primeira apenas delineia e esboça algo, enquanto a última o patenteia claramente; mormente sabendo eu que entre vós, isto é, em vossas casas e em vós mesmos, há aqueles que me entendem.

1Paul to Seneca and Lucilius, greeting. Of the subject on which you have written I must not speak with pen and ink, of which the former marks out and draws somewhat, and the latter shows it clearly, especially as I know that among you, that is, in your homes and in you, there are those who understand me.

2Cumpre honrar a todos, e tanto mais quanto os homens se apegam a qualquer ocasião de ofensa. Se formos pacientes para com eles, certamente os venceremos em todos os pontos, contanto que sejam homens capazes de se arrepender das suas ações. Adeus.

2Honour is to be paid to all, and so much the more because men catch at opportunities of being offended. If we are patient with them, we shall certainly overcome them at every point, provided they be men who can be sorry for their actions. Farewell.
