1Sêneca a Paulo, saudações. Grande parte das vossas obras em toda parte acha-se envolta em alegorias e enigmas; e por isso a extraordinária força de matéria e de engenho que vos foi concedida deveria ser aformoseada, não digo com afetação de palavras, mas com certo esmero.

1Seneca to Paul, greeting. Much in every part of your works is enclosed in allegory and enigma, and therefore the great force that is given you of matter and talent should be beautified, I do not say with elegance of words, but with a certain care.

2Nem deveis temer aquilo que me lembro de vos ter ouvido dizer frequentemente: que muitos que se apegam a tais artifícios viciam o pensamento e enfraquecem o vigor da matéria. Mas quisera eu que cedêsseis a mim e vos acomodásseis ao gênio da língua latina, dando beleza aos vossos nobres vocábulos, para que o sublime dom que vos foi confiado seja dignamente tratado por vós. 2Nor should you fear what I remember you have often said; that many who affect such things vitiate the thought and emasculate the strength of the matter. But I wish you would yield to me and humour the genius of Latin, and give beauty to your noble words, that the great gift that has been granted you may be worthily treated by you. Farewell.
