Pastor de Hermas 52

1Ele mostrou-me muitas árvores que não tinham folhas, mas pareciam estar secas, pois eram todas parecidas.

1He showed me many trees that had no leaves, but seemed to be dry, for they were all alike.

2E ele disse-me: 'Vês estas árvores?' 'Sim, Senhor,' disse eu, 'eu as vejo; todas são parecidas e secas.'

2And he said to me: 'Do you see these trees?' 'Yes, Lord,' said I, 'I see them; they are all alike and dry.'

3Ele respondeu e disse-me: 'Estas árvores que vês são as que habitam neste mundo.'

3He answered and said to me: 'These trees that you see are those who dwell in this world.'

4'Por que então, Senhor,' disse eu, 'são elas como se fossem secas e todas parecidas?'

4'Why then, Lord,' said I, 'are they as if they were dry and all alike?'

5'Porque,' disse ele, 'nem o justo nem o pecador é manifesto neste mundo, mas todos são parecidos.'

5'Because,' said he, 'neither the righteous nor the sinner is manifest in this world, but all are alike.'

6'Pois este mundo é como o inverno para o justo, e eles não são manifestos, habitando com os pecadores.'

6'For this world is like winter for the righteous, and they are not manifest, dwelling with the sinners.'

7'Pois como no inverno as árvores que perderam suas folhas são parecidas e não se manifesta quais delas estão secas e quais estão vivas, assim também neste mundo nem o justo nem o pecador é manifesto, mas todos são parecidos.'

7'For as in winter the trees that have lost their leaves are alike and it is not manifest which of them are dry and which are alive, so also in this world neither the righteous nor the sinner is manifest, but all are alike.'
