Pastor de Hermas 32

1OITAVO MANDAMENTO: Te disse, disse ele, que as criaturas de Deus são duplas; pois a abstinência também é dupla. Porque em algumas coisas é necessário abster-se, e em outras não.

1EIGHTH COMMANDMENT: I told you, he said, that the creatures of God are double; for abstinence is also double. Because in some things it is necessary to abstain, and in others not.

2Faz-me saber, disse eu, senhor, em quais coisas devo me abster, e em quais não.

2Make known to me, I said, lord, in which things I must abstain, and in which not.

3Ouve, disse ele: Abstém-te do mal e não o faças; mas do bem não te abstenhas, mas faze-o. Porque se te abstiveres de fazeres o bem, cometes grande pecado.

3Listen, he said: Abstain from evil and do not do it; but from good do not abstain, but do it. Because if you abstain from doing good, you commit great sin.

4Porque todo aquele que necessita e sofre aflições em sua vida diária está em grande tormento e necessidade. Aquele, portanto, que não socorre tal homem dos tormentos comete grande pecado.

4Because everyone who is in need and suffers afflictions in his daily life is in great torment and need. He, therefore, who does not succor such a man from torments commits great sin.
