Fragmentos de Papias e Quadrato 6

1E dizia também o presbítero o seguinte: Marcos, tendo-se tornado o intérprete de Pedro, redigiu com exatidão tudo quanto reteve na memória. Contudo, não foi em ordem precisa que ele relatou os ditos ou as ações de Cristo. Pois ele não ouviu o Senhor nem o acompanhou pessoalmente. Mas posteriormente, como disse, acompanhou a Pedro, o qual adaptava os seus ensinamentos às necessidades dos seus ouvintes, sem a intenção de compor uma narrativa ordenada das palavras do Senhor.

1And the elder said this also: Mark, having become the interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately whatsoever he remembered. It was not, however, in exact order that he related the sayings or deeds of Christ. For he neither heard the Lord nor accompanied Him. But afterwards, as I said, he accompanied Peter, who accommodated his instructions to the necessities of his hearers, but with no intention of giving a regular narrative of the Lord's sayings.

2Pelo que Marcos em nada errou ao escrever algumas coisas conforme as recordava na memória. Pois de uma coisa teve especial cuidado: de não omitir nada do que ouvira, nem acrescentar qualquer falsidade nas declarações. Isto é o que relata Papias a respeito de Marcos.

2Wherefore Mark made no mistake in thus writing some things as he remembered them. For of one thing he took especial care, not to omit anything he had heard, and not to put anything fictitious into the statements. This is what is related by Papias regarding Mark.

3E no que concerne a Mateus, fez ele as seguintes afirmações: Mateus reuniu os oráculos do Senhor na língua hebraica, e cada um os interpretava conforme a sua capacidade.

3And with regard to Matthew he has made the following statements: Matthew put together the oracles of the Lord in the Hebrew language, and each one interpreted them as best he could.
