1Para nós, nenhuma afetação humana de equanimidade canina, modelada pela insensibilidade, autoriza o exercício da paciência; autoriza-o, sim, a disposição divina de uma disciplina viva e celestial, que nos apresenta, antes de tudo, Deus

2em pessoa como exemplo de paciência. Ele espalha igualmente sobre justos e injustos o esplendor desta luz; permite que os benefícios das estações, os serviços dos elementos e os tributos de toda a natureza cheguem ao mesmo tempo aos dignos e aos indignos. Suporta os povos mais ingratos, que adoram os brinquedos das artes e as obras de suas próprias mãos e perseguem Seu Nome e Sua família. Suporta o luxo, a avareza, a iniquidade e a maldade, que se tornam cada dia mais insolentes; a tal ponto que, por Sua própria paciência, parece diminuir-Se, pois muitos não creem no Senhor porque passam tanto tempo sem saber que Ele está irado com o mundo.

2Himself in the very first place as an example of patience; who scatters equally over just and unjust the bloom of this light; who suffers the good offices of the seasons, the services of the elements, the tributes of entire nature, to accrue at once to worthy and unworthy; bearing with the most ungrateful nations, adoring as they do the toys of the arts and the works of their own hands, persecuting His Name together with His family; bearing with luxury, avarice, iniquity, malignity, waxing insolent daily: so that by His own patience He disparages Himself; for the cause why many believe not in the Lord is that they are so long without knowing that He is wroth with the world.
