1Ó Rodes, tu és infeliz; pois primeiro a ti,

1O RHODES, thou art unhappy; for first thee,

2A ti prantearei; e tu serás a primeira

2Thee will I mourn; and thou shalt be the first

3Das cidades, e primeiro serás destruída,

3Of cities, and first shalt thou be destroyed,

4Desprovida de homens, mas dos meios de vida

4Bereft of men, but of the means of life

5Não de todo destituída. E tu navegarás,

5Not wholly destitute. And thou shalt sail,

6Delos, e serás instável sobre as águas;

6Delos, and be unstable on the water;

7Chipre, uma vaga do teu mar resplandecente

7Cyprus, a billow of thy gleaming sea

8Algum dia te destruirá; a ti, Sicília,

8Shall sometime thee destroy; thee, Sicily,

9O fogo que arde em teu seio te consumirá.

9The fire that burns within thee shall consume.

10Nem atenderão à terrível e estranha água de Deus.

10Nor heed God's terrible and foreign water.

11Noé, único fugitivo dentre todos os homens, veio.

11Noah sole fugitive from all men came.

12A terra flutuará, os montes flutuarão, e até o céu flutuará,

12Earth shall float, hills float, and even sky shall float,

13Tudo será água, e todas as coisas

13Everything shall be water and all things

14Serão destruídas pelas águas. E os ventos

14Shall be destroyed by waters. And the winds

15Cessarão, e uma segunda era surgirá.

15Shall stand still and a second age shall be.

16Ó Frígia, primeiro chamejarás da crista

16O Phrygia, first shalt thou flame from the crest

17Das águas; e primeiro na impiedade

17Of the water; and first in impiety

18Negarás ao próprio Deus, buscando favor

18Thou shalt deny God himself, courting favor

19Junto a falsos deuses, os quais de todo destruirão

19With false gods, which shall utterly destroy

20A ti, ó miserável, enquanto muitos anos se passam.

20Thee, wretched one, while many years roll round.

21Os desventurados etíopes, sob tormento,

21The hapless Ethiopians under pain,

22Padecendo coisas lamentáveis, pelas espadas

22Suffering things lamentable, shall by swords

23Serão feridos enquanto se prostram sobre a terra.

23Be smitten whilst they crouch upon the ground.

24O rico Egito, sempre solícito por seu trigo,

24Rich Egypt ever caring for her corn,

25A quem o Nilo, por suas sete correntes caudalosas,

25Which Nilus by his seven swimming streams

26Embriaga, em discórdia intestina

26Intoxicates, shall in intestine strife

27Perecerá; e dali os homens, inesperadamente,

27Destroy; and thence men unexpectedly

28Expulsarão Ápis, que não é deus para os homens.

28Shall drive out Apis, not the god for men.

29Ai, ai de ti, Laodiceia! Tu,

29Alas, alas, Laodicea! thou

30Sem jamais contemplar a Deus, jazerás, ó audaz;

30Not ever seeing God shalt lie, bold one;

31E sobre ti arremessará uma vaga do Lico.

31And over thee shall dash a wave of Lycus.

32Aquele mesmo que nasceu o Deus Todo-Poderoso,

32He himself who is born the mighty God,

33Que operará muitos sinais, suspenderá pelo céu

33Who shall work many signs, shall through heaven hang

34Um eixo no meio, e porá para os homens

34An axle in the midst, and place for men

35Um grande terror para ser contemplado nas alturas,

35A mighty terror to be seen on high,

36Medindo uma coluna com um fogo grandioso,

36Measuring a column with a mighty fire

37Cujas gotas trucidarão as raças dos mortais

37Whose drops shall slay the races of mankind

38Que ousaram males. Mas um Senhor comum

38That have dared evils. But a common Lord

39Haverá em certo tempo, e então os homens

39There shall at some time be, and then shall men

40Propiciarão a Deus, porém não porão termo

40Propitiate God, but shall not make an end

41Às dores infrutíferas. E mediante a casa de Davi

41Of fruitless sorrows. And through David's house

42Hão de cumprir-se todas as coisas. Pois o próprio Deus

42Shall all things come to pass. For God himself

43Concedeu-lhe o poder e colocou-o em sua mão;

43Gave him the power and put it in his hand;

44Debaixo dos seus pés repousarão os seus mensageiros,

44Under his feet shall sleep his messengers,

45E alguns acenderão fogos, e outros farão

45And some shall kindle fires, and some shall make

46Rios brotarem, e outros resgatarão cidades,

46Rivers appear, and some shall rescue towns,

47E alguns enviarão ventos. Mas, além disso,

47And some shall send forth winds. But furthermore

48Uma vida penosa virá sobre muitos homens,

48A grievous life shall come on many men,

49Penetrando em suas almas e mudando os corações humanos.

49Entering their souls and changing human hearts.

50Mas quando um novo rebento, de uma raiz,

50But when a new shoot shall out of a root

51Brotar rebentos, a criação, que a todos

51Put forth eyes, the creation, which to all

54Outros dominarem, uma tribo de persas belicosos,

55Bride-chambers straightway shall be terrible

56Por causa de obras iníquas. Pois a seu próprio filho

58A ruína de sua mãe; e com o pai

58The ruin of his mother; and with sire

59A filha se deitará e fará adormecer

59Shall daughter lie down and shall put to sleep

60Esta lei estranha. Porém a eles depois

60This foreign law. But to them afterwards

61O Ares romano reluzirá de muitas lanças;

61Shall Roman Ares flash from many a spear;

62E misturarão muita terra com sangue humano.

62And they shall mix much land with human blood.

63Mas então um chefe da Itália fugirá

63But then a chief of Italy shall flee

64Da força da lança. Porém deixarão

64From the force of the spear. But they shall leave

65Sobre a terra uma lança lavrada com ouro,

65Upon the land a lance inscribed with gold,

66A qual, como estandarte insigne de seu governo,

66Which as the signal ensign of their rule

67Os combatentes da vanguarda levam de contínuo.

67The foremost fighters carry constantly.

68E sucederá que, quando a ímpia e malfadada

68And it shall be, when evil and ill-starred

69Ílio lastimosamente consumar para todos

69Ilias shall piteously complete for all

70Um túmulo, e não um conúbio, então as noivas chorarão amargamente,

70A tomb, not marriage, then shall brides weep sore,

71Porque não conheceram a Deus, mas sempre deram

71Because they knew not God, but always gave

72Por atabaques e címbalos um som estridente.

72By kettle-drums and cymbals boisterous sound.

73Consulta o oráculo, ó Cólofon;

73Consult the oracle, O Colophon;

74Pois um fogo grande e pavoroso paira sobre ti.

74For a great fearful fire hangs over thee.

75Mal-aventurada Tessália, a terra não mais

75Ill-wedded Thessaly, the earth no more

76Te verá, nem as tuas cinzas, e solitária,

76Shall see thee, nor thy ashes, and alone

77Escapando do continente, tu nadarás;

77Escaping from the mainland thou shalt swim;

78Assim, ó infeliz, tu da guerra serás

78Thus, O thou wretched one, shalt thou of war

79O triste despojo, tendo caído

79Be melancholy refuse, having fallen

80Por rios que correm velozes e por espadas.

80By swiftly flowing rivers and by swords.

81E tu, ó miserável Corinto, receberás

81And thou, O wretched Corinth, shalt receive

82Ao redor de ti o severo Ares, desventurada,

82Around thyself stern Ares, hapless one,

83E perecereis uns sobre os outros.

83And ye shall perish one upon another.

84Tiro, tu, desditosa, ficarás desamparada;

84Tyre, thou, unhappy, shalt be left alone;

85Pois, tornada viúva pela fraqueza

85For, made a widow by the feebleness

86Dos homens piedosos, serás reduzida a nada.

86Of pious men, thou shalt be brought to naught.

87Ah, Cele-Síria, dos homens fenícios

87Ah, Coele-Syria, of Phoenician men

88O derradeiro baluarte, sobre o qual o salgado mar

88The last hold, upon whom the briny sea

89De Berito transbordando se derrama,

89Of Berytus disgorging is poured forth,

90Ó miserável, tu não conheceste o teu Deus,

90O wretched one, thou didst not know thy God,

91Que outrora na foz do Jordão se lavou,

91Who once in the mouth of Jordan washed himself,

92— E o Espírito estendeu suas asas em voo em direção a ele —

92— And the Spirit spread his wings in flight towards him —

93Que antes da terra e do céu estrelado

93Who before both the earth and starry heaven

94Era, o Verbo verdadeiro, gerado por seu Pai,

94Was, actual Word, begotten by his Father,

95E revestindo-se de carne pelo Espírito Santo

95And by the Holy Spirit donning flesh

96Ele presto voou para a morada de seu Pai.

96He quickly flew unto his Father's house.

97E para ele três torres estabeleceu

97And for him three towers did the mighty heaven

98O grandioso céu, nas quais habitam os nobres guias de Deus,

98Establish, in which dwell God's noble guides,

99A esperança, a piedade e a tão almejada reverência,

99Hope, piety, and reverence much-desired,

100Não tendo no ouro nem na prata regozijo,

100Not having in gold or in silver joy,

101Mas nos atos reverentes dos homens —

101But in the reverential acts of men —

102Tanto em sacrifícios como nos mais retos pensamentos.

102Both sacrifices and most righteous thoughts.

103E tu sacrificarás ao Deus imortal,

103And thou shalt sacrifice to the immortal

104Poderoso e augusto, não derretendo grãos

104And mighty God august, not melting grains

105De incenso no fogo, nem com a espada

105Of frankincense in fire, nor with the sword

106Imolando o cordeiro de velo espesso, mas com todos

106Slaying the shaggy-haired lamb, but with all

107Os que partilham do teu sangue toma aves silvestres, oferece oração,

107Who bear thy blood take wild fowls, offer prayer,

108E fitando os olhos no céu, despacha-as embora;

108And fixing eyes on heaven send them away;

109E aspergiras água sobre o fogo puro,

109And thou shalt sprinkle water on pure fire

110Tendo clamado: “Assim como o Pai te gerou,

110Having cried: “As the Father did beget

111A ti, o Verbo, ó Pai, enviei uma ave,

111Thee, the Word, Father, I sent forth a bird,

112Veloz mensageira de palavras, com águas santas

112Swift messenger of words, with holy waters

113Aspergindo o teu batismo, ó Verbo, pelo qual

113Besprinkling thy baptism, O Word, through which

114Tu te manifestaste no fogo.”

114Thou didst make thyself manifest in fire.”

115Não fecharás a tua porta, quando vier

115Thou shalt not shut thy door, when there shall come

116A ti um forasteiro necessitado para aplacar

116A stranger unto thee in need to curb

117A sua fome decorrente da pobreza,

117His hunger which comes from his poverty,

118Mas acolhendo aquele homem, asperge-o

118But taking hold of that man sprinkle him

119Com água e ora três vezes; e ao teu Deus

119With water and pray thrice; and to thy God

120Do tu assim clama: “Não anseio por riquezas;

120Do thou thus cry: “I do not long for wealth;

121Eu, como suplicante, outrora publicamente acolhi

121A suppliant I once publicly received

122A um suplicante; ó Pai, tu que és o provedor, ouve-me.”

122A suppliant; Father, thou provider, hear.”

123Quando tiveres orado, tu darás a ele;

123When thou hast prayed thou shalt give unto him;

124E o homem partiu em seguida . . .

124And the man went away thereafter. . . .

125Não me aflijas, santo temor de Deus,

125Do not afflict me, holy fear of God

126E justo, de nascimento puro, não escravizado,

126And righteous, as to birth pure, unenslaved,

127Atestado . . .

127Attested. . . .

128Faze tu, ó Pai, o meu mísero coração

128Do thou, O Father, make my wretched heart

129Sossegado; para ti tenho olhado, para ti,

129Stand still; to thee have I looked, unto thee,

130O imaculado, a quem mãos humanas não geraram.

130The undefiled, whom hands did not produce.

131Sardenha, tão altiva agora, tu serás reduzida

131Sardinia, weighty now, thou shalt be changed

132A cinzas. Tu não mais serás uma ilha,

132To ashes. Thou shalt be no more an isle,

133Quando chegar a décima época. Por entre as ondas

133When the tenth time shall come. Amid the waves

134Os marinheiros te buscarão quando não mais existires,

134Shall sailors seek thee when thou art no more,

135E sobre ti os martins-pescadores entoarão triste lamento.

135And o'er thee shall kingfishers wail sad dirge.

136Escabrosa Migdônia, farol do mar

136Rugged Mygdonia, beacon of the sea

137De onde é árduo escapar, eras te vangloriarás

137Hard to get out of, ages shalt thou boast

138E pelas eras serás de todo assolada

138And unto ages shalt be all destroyed

139Por um vento abrasador, e delirarás com muitas dores.

139With a hot wind, and rave with many woes.

140Ó terra celta, sobre tão vasta cadeia de montes,

140O Celtic land, on mountain range so great,

141Além dos intransponíveis Alpes, areia profunda

141Beyond impassable Alp, thee deep sand

142Te sepultará completamente; não mais darás

142Shall altogether bury; thou shalt give

143Tributo, nem cereal, nem pastagem;

143Tribute no more, nor corn, nor pasturage;

144E longe para sempre dos povos

144And thou from peoples ever far away

145Ficarás inteiramente desolada, e engrossando

145Shalt be all-desolate, and becoming thick

146Com gelo frio pagarás por um ultraje,

146With chill ice thou shalt for an outrage pay,

147O qual não percebeste, ó profana.

147Which thou didst not perceive, unholy one.

148Roma de coração intrépido, para o Olimpo reluzirás

148Stout-hearted Rome, thou to Olympus shalt

149Como um raio após as lanças macedônias;

149Flash lightning after Macedonian spears;

150Mas Deus te tornará de todo desconhecida,

150But God shall make thee utterly unknown,

151Quando aos olhos pareceres permanecer

151When thou wouldst to the eye seem to remain

152Muito mais firme. Então contra ti tais coisas clamarei.

152Much more firm. Then to thee such things I'll cry.

153Perecendo, tu então gritarás e ferverás

153Perishing thou shalt then cry out and boil

154Em agonia; uma segunda vez a ti, ó Roma,

154In pain; a second time to thee, O Rome,

155Outra vez uma segunda vez hei de falar.

155Again a second time I am to speak.

156E agora por ti, ó miserável Síria,

156And now for thee, O wretched Syria,

157Pranteio amargamente com dor compassiva.

157Do I wail bitterly in pitying grief.

158Ó tebanos mal-avisados, um som maligno

158O Thebans ill-advised, an evil sound

159Paira sobre vós enquanto as flautas entoam suas notas;

159Is over you while flutes speak out their tones;

160Pois a trombeta soará para vós um som funesto,

160For you shall trumpet sound an evil sound

161E vereis toda a terra destruída.

161And ye shall see the entire land destroyed

162Ai, ai de ti, ó desventurada;

162Alas, alas for thee, thou wretched one;

163Ai, ai de ti, ó mar perverso!

163Alas, alas thou evil-minded sea!

164Serás inteiramente devorado pelo fogo,

164Thou shalt be wholly eaten up of fire

165E os homens com a tua salmoura destruirás.

165And people with thy brine shalt thou destroy.

166Pois haverá tal fogo bramindo sobre a terra,

166For there shall be such raging fire on earth

167Que correrá como água, e destruirá

167As flows like water, and it shall destroy

168A terra inteira. Ele porá os outeiros em chamas,

168The whole land. It shall set the hills on fire,

169Queimará os rios e esgotará as fontes.

169Shall burn the rivers, and exhaust the springs.

170O mundo ficará em desordem enquanto o gênero humano

170The world shall be disordered whilst mankind

171Estiver perecendo. E então os miseráveis,

171Are perishing. And then the wretched ones,

172Gravemente queimados, olharão para o céu trabalhado

172Burned badly, shall look unto heaven inwrought

173Não com estrelas, mas com fogo. Não mui depressa

173Not with stars, but with fire. Not speedily

174Serão levados a perecer, mas consumidos

174Shall they be made to perish, but dissolved

175Sob a carne, e ardendo no espírito

175From under flesh, and burning in the spirit

176Por longos anos sem fim, saberão que a lei de Deus

176For age-long years, they shall know that God's law

177É sempre severa para ser posta à prova, e incapaz

177Is always hard to put to test and not

178De ser enganada; e então a terra, tomada por violência,

178To be deceived; and then earth, seized by force,

179Ousando qualquer deus que admitiu

179Daring whatever god she did admit

180Em seus altares, ludibriada, converter-se-á em fumaça

180Unto her altars, cheated, turned to smoke

181Pelo ar alterado; e hão de sofrer

181Through the changed air; and they shall undergo

182Muitos tormentos aqueles que por torpe ganho profetizarem

182Much suffering who for gain shall prophesy

183Coisas vergonhosas, nutrindo o tempo da perversidade.

183Shameful things, nourishing the evil time.

184E os hebreus que se cobrem com peles ásperas

184And the Hebrews who put on the shaggy skins

185De ovelhas se mostrarão falsos, em cuja linhagem

185Of sheep shall prove false, in which race

186Não obtiveram porção por herança,

186Obtained no portion by inheritance,

187Mas proferindo meras palavras sobre aflições, eles

187But talking mere words over sorrows they

188São avarentos, os quais mudarão o curso de sua vida

188Are misers, who shall change their course of life

189E não desencaminharão os justos, que de coração

189And not mislead the just, who through the heart

190Com toda a fidelidade propiciam o seu Deus.

190All-faithfully propitiate their God.

191Mas na terceira sorte de anos revolutos,

191But in the third lot of revolving years,

192Oitavo o primeiro, outro mundo há de surgir.

192Eighth the first, shall another world appear.

193A noite será de todo . . . longa e desprovida de luz.

193Night shall be all . . . long and without light.

194E então circulará o terrível mau cheiro

194And then shall pass around the dreadful stench

195Do enxofre, mensageiro de homicídios,

195Of brimstone, messenger of homicides,

196Quando eles pela noite e pela fome forem trucidados.

196When they shall be by night and hunger slain.

197Então uma mente pura Deus suscitará nos homens,

197Then a pure mind shall God beget in men,

198E restabelecerá a raça, tal como era

198And shall the race establish, as it was

199Em tempos idos; ninguém mais cortará

199Aforetime; longer shall not any one

200Profundo rego com o arado curvo, nem dois bois

200Deep furrow cut with round plow, nor two oxen

201Guiados retos cravarão o ferro; nem vinhas

201Straight guiding dip the iron down; nor vines

202Haverá, nem espigas de trigo; mas todos comerão

202Shall be nor ears of corn; but all shall eat

203Juntos o orvalhado maná com dentes alvos.

203Together dewy manna with white teeth.

204E então entre eles Deus também estará,

204And then among them God shall also be,

205E ele lhes ensinará como me ensinou,

205And he shall teach them as he has taught me,

206A mim, a entristecida. Pois quantos males

206The sad one. For how many evil things

207Cometi outrora com pleno conhecimento, e quantas coisas

207I did with knowledge once, and many things

208Inadvertida também impiamente pratiquei!

208Heedless I also wickedly performed.

209Inumeráveis foram os meus leitos, mas de nenhum laço matrimonial

209Countless my couches, but no marriage-bond

210Se cuidou; e eu, de todo infiel, trouxe

210Was cared for; and I, all-unfaithful, brought

211A todos um juramento cruel. Despedi

211To all a savage oath. I turned away

212Os necessitados, e entre os primeiros adentrei

212Those in need and among the foremost went

213Em idêntico despenhadeiro, e não atentei para a palavra de Deus.

213Into like glen and minded not God's word.

214Por isso o fogo me consumiu e há de me devorar;

214Therefore did fire consume me and shall gnaw;

215Pois não viverei para sempre, mas um tempo

215For I shall not live always, but a time

216De infortúnio há de destruir-me, quando para mim

216Of evil shall destroy me, when for me

217Os homens, junto à margem do mar,

217Men shall beside the margin of the sea

218Construírem um sepulcro, e me tirarem a vida com pedras;

218Construct a tomb, and shall slay me with stones;

219Pois, tendo-me deitado com meu pai, um filho querido

219For lying with my father a dear son

220A ele apresentei. Feri-me, feri-me todos;

220Did I present him. Smite me, smite me all;

221Pois assim viverei e fixarei meus olhos no céu.

221For thus shall I live and fix eyes on heaven.
