Natividade de Maria 8

1Havia, pois, entre os demais um homem chamado José, da casa e família de Davi, já de avançada idade; e quando todos levaram as suas varas conforme a ordem, somente ele reteve a sua.

1Now there was among the rest Joseph, of the house and family of David, a man of great age: and when all brought there rods, according to the order, he alone withheld his.

2Pelo que, não tendo aparecido coisa alguma conforme a voz divina, o sumo sacerdote julgou necessário consultar a Deus uma segunda vez; e Ele respondeu que, dentre os que haviam sido designados, unicamente aquele a quem a virgem deveria ser desposada não trouxera a sua vara.

2Wherefore, when nothing in conformity with the divine voice appeared, the high priest thought it necessary to consult God a second time; and He answered, that of those who had been designated, he alone to whom the virgin ought to be espoused had not brought his rod.

3José, portanto, foi descoberto.

3Joseph, therefore, was found out.

4Pois, tendo ele apresentado a sua vara, e tendo a pomba descido do céu e pousado sobre o cimo dela, tornou-se evidente a todos que ele era o homem a quem a virgem haveria de ser desposada.

4For when he had brought his rod, and the dove came from heaven; and settled upon the top of it, it clearly appeared to all that he was the man to whom the virgin should be espoused.

5Assim, celebradas as cerimônias costumeiras de desponsório, ele regressou à cidade de Belém a fim de pôr em ordem a sua casa e providenciar o necessário para as núpcias.

5Therefore, the usual ceremonies of betrothal having been gone through, he went back to the city of Bethlehem to put his house in order, and to procure things necessary for the marriage.

6Mas Maria, a virgem do Senhor, acompanhada de outras sete donzelas da sua idade e que haviam sido desmamadas na mesma época, as quais recebera do sacerdote, retornou para a casa de seus pais na Galileia.

6But Mary, the virgin of the Lord, with seven other virgins of her own age, and who had been weaned at the same time, whom she had received from the priest, returned to the house of her parents in Galilee.
