1A morte de Pilatos, que condenou Jesus.

1The Death of Pilate, Who Condemned Jesus.

2E quando Tibério César, o imperador dos romanos, estava sofrendo de uma doença grave, e sabendo que havia em Jerusalém um certo médico, de nome Jesus, que com uma única palavra curava todas as enfermidades, ele, sem saber que os judeus e Pilatos O haviam condenado à morte, ordenou a um certo amigo seu chamado Volusiano: Atravesse os mares o mais rápido possível; e dirás a Pilatos, meu servo e amigo, que me envie este médico, para que ele possa restaurar-me a minha saúde anterior.

2And when Tiberius Caesar, the emperor of the Romans, was labouring under a grievous disease, and understanding that there was at Jerusalem a certain physician, Jesus by name, who by a single word cured all infirmities, he, not knowing that the Jews and Pilate had put Him to death, ordered a certain friend of his named Volusianus: Go as quickly as possible across the seas; and thou shalt tell Pilate, my servant and friend, to send me this physician, that he may restore me to my former health.

3E este Volusiano, tendo ouvido a ordem do imperador, partiu imediatamente e foi até Pilatos, como lhe havia sido ordenado.

3And this Volusianus, having heard the emperor's command, immediately departed, and came to Pilate, as he had been commanded.

4E relatou ao mesmo Pilatos o que lhe havia sido confiado por Tibério César, dizendo: Tibério César, imperador dos romanos, teu mestre, tendo ouvido que nesta cidade há um médico que só com a sua palavra cura enfermidades, implora-te sinceramente que o envies a ele para a cura da sua enfermidade.

4And he related to the same Pilate what had been entrusted to him by Tiberius Caesar, saying: Tiberius Caesar, the emperor of the Romans, thy master, having heard that in this city there is a physician who by his word alone heals infirmities, begs thee earnestly to send him to him for the curing of his infirmity.

5Pilatos, ao ouvir isso, ficou com muito medo, sabendo que por inveja o havia feito morrer.

5Pilate, hearing this, was very much afraid, knowing that through envy he had caused Him to be put to death.

6Pilatos respondeu assim ao mesmo mensageiro, dizendo: Este homem era um malfeitor e um homem que atraía para si todo o povo; então foi realizado um conselho dos sábios da cidade, e eu fiz com que ele fosse crucificado.

6Pilate answered the same messenger thus, saying: This man was a malefactor, and a man who drew to himself all the people; so a council of the wise men of the city was held, and I caused him to be crucified.

7E este mensageiro, voltando para sua hospedaria, encontrou uma certa mulher chamada Verônica, que havia sido amiga de Jesus; e ele disse: Ó mulher, certo médico que estava nesta cidade, que curava os enfermos apenas com uma palavra, por que os judeus o mataram? E ela começou a chorar, dizendo: Ah, eu! meu senhor, meu Deus e meu Senhor, a quem Pilatos, por inveja, entregou, condenou e mandou crucificar.

7And this messenger returning to his inn, met a certain woman named Veronica, who had been a friend of Jesus; and he said: O woman, a certain physician who was in this city, who cured the sick by a word alone, why have the Jews put him to death? And she began to weep, saying: Ah me! my lord, my God and my Lord, whom Pilate for envy delivered, condemned, and ordered to be crucified.

8Então ele, extremamente entristecido, disse: Estou veementemente entristecido por ser incapaz de realizar aquilo para o qual meu senhor me enviou.

8Then he, being exceedingly grieved, said: I am vehemently grieved that I am unable to accomplish that for which my lord had sent me.

9E Verônica lhe disse: Quando meu Senhor estava pregando, e eu, muito contra minha vontade, fui privada de Sua presença, desejei que Seu quadro fosse pintado para mim, para que, enquanto eu estivesse privado de Sua presença, a figura de Seu quadro pudesse pelo menos me dar consolo.

9And Veronica said to him: When my Lord was going about preaching, and I, much against my will, was deprived of His presence, I wished His picture to be painted for me, in order that, while I was deprived of His presence, the figure of His picture might at least afford me consolation.

10E quando eu estava levando a tela para o pintor pintar, meu Senhor me encontrou e perguntou para onde eu estava indo.

10And when I was carrying the canvas to the painter to be painted, my Lord met me, and asked whither I was going.

11E quando eu lhe revelei o motivo da minha viagem, Ele me pediu o pano e me devolveu impressionado com a imagem de Seu venerável rosto.

11And when I had disclosed to Him the cause of my journey, He asked of me the cloth, and gave it back to me impressed with the image of His venerable face.

12Portanto, se teu senhor olhar devotamente para Sua face, ele obterá imediatamente o benefício da saúde.

12Therefore, if thy lord will devoutly gaze upon His face, he shall obtain forthwith the benefit of health.

13E ele lhe disse: Pode-se obter um quadro desse tipo em ouro ou em prata? Ela disse a ele: Não; mas pela piedosa influência da devoção.

13And he said to her: Is a picture of such a sort procurable by gold or silver? She said to him: No; but by the pious influence of devotion.

14Portanto, partirei contigo e levarei a imagem para ser vista por César e voltarei novamente.

14I shall therefore set out with thee, and shall carry the picture to be seen by Caesar, and shall come back again.

15Volusiano, portanto, veio com Verônica a Roma e disse ao imperador Tibério: Jesus, por quem você ansiava, Pilatos e os judeus entregaram a uma morte injusta e, por inveja, foram afixados na forca da cruz.

15Volusianus therefore came with Veronica to Rome, and said to Tiberius the emperor: Jesus, whom thou hast been longing for, Pilate and the Jews have delivered to an unjust death, and have through envy affixed to the gibbet of the cross.

16Veio, portanto, comigo uma certa matrona, trazendo uma imagem do próprio Jesus; e se você olhar para isso com devoção, obterá imediatamente o benefício de sua saúde.

16There has therefore come with me a certain matron, bringing a picture of Jesus himself; and if thou wilt devoutly look upon it, thou shalt immediately obtain the benefit of thy health.

17César, portanto, ordenou que o caminho fosse coberto com panos de seda e que o quadro lhe fosse apresentado; e assim que olhou para isso, recuperou a saúde anterior.

17Caesar therefore ordered the way to be strewn with silk cloths, and the picture to be presented to him; and as soon as he had looked upon it, he regained his former health.

18Pôncio Pilatos, portanto, por ordem de César, é levado e levado a Roma.

18Pontius Pilate, therefore, by the command of Caesar, is taken and brought through to Rome.

19César, ao saber que Pilatos havia chegado a Roma, ficou furioso contra ele e fez com que fosse trazido até ele.

19Caesar, hearing that Pilate had arrived at Rome, was filled with exceeding fury against him, and caused him to be brought to him.

20Mas Pilatos trouxe consigo a túnica sem costuras de Jesus; e ele o usou na presença do imperador.

20But Pilate brought down with him the seamless tunic of Jesus; and he wore it on him in presence of the emperor.

21E assim que o imperador o viu, ele deixou de lado toda a sua raiva e imediatamente levantou-se para encontrá-lo.

21And as soon as the emperor saw him, he laid aside all his anger, and forthwith rose up to meet him.

22Nem ele foi capaz de falar duramente com ele em nada; e aquele que parecia tão terrível e feroz em sua ausência, agora em sua presença é de alguma forma considerado brando.

22Nor was he able to speak harshly to him in anything; and he who seemed so terrible and fierce in his absence, now in his presence is somehow found to be mild.

23E quando ele o mandou embora, imediatamente ele se irritou terrivelmente contra ele, gritando que ele era um desgraçado, visto que não lhe havia mostrado a fúria de seu coração.

23And when he had sent him away, immediately he blazed out against him terribly, crying out that he was a wretch, inasmuch as he had not at all shown him the fury of his heart.

24E imediatamente o fez ser chamado de volta, jurando e declarando que ele era o filho da morte, e que era infame que ele vivesse na terra.

24And immediately he made him be called back, swearing and declaring that he was the son of death, and that it was infamous that he should live upon the earth.

25E assim que o viu, imediatamente o saudou e jogou fora toda a ferocidade de sua mente.

25And as soon as he saw him, he forthwith saluted him, and threw away all the ferocity of his mind.

26Todos se perguntaram; e ele mesmo se perguntou se deveria atacar Pilatos quando ele estivesse ausente e que, enquanto estivesse presente, não pudesse dizer nada rudemente a ele.

26All wondered; and he himself wondered that he should thus blaze out against Pilate when he was absent, and that while he was present he could say nothing to him roughly.

27Então, por um impulso divino, ou talvez por conselho de algum cristão, ele fez com que ele fosse despido daquela túnica e imediatamente retomou contra ele sua antiga ferocidade mental.

27Then, by a divine impulse, or perhaps by the advice of some Christian, he caused him to be stripped of that tunic, and immediately resumed against him his former ferocity of mind.

28E quando isso o imperador ficou muito admirado, foi-lhe dito que aquela túnica pertencia ao Senhor Jesus.

28And when at this the emperor wondered very much, it was told him that that tunic had belonged to the Lord Jesus.

29Então o imperador ordenou que ele fosse mantido na prisão, até que deliberasse num conselho de sábios o que deveria ser feito com ele.

29Then the emperor ordered him to be kept in prison, until he should deliberate in a council of the wise men what ought to be done with him.

30E poucos dias depois, foi proferida sentença sobre Pilatos, para que ele fosse condenado à morte mais vergonhosa.

30And a few days after, sentence was therefore passed upon Pilate, that he should be condemned to the most disgraceful death.

31Pilatos, ao ouvir isso, suicidou-se com sua própria faca e com tal morte acabou com sua vida.

31Pilate, hearing this, killed himself with his own knife, and by such a death ended his life.

32Quando César soube da morte de Pilatos, ele disse: Verdadeiramente ele morreu de uma morte muito vergonhosa, a quem sua própria mão não poupou.

32When Caesar knew of the death of Pilate, he said: Truly he has died by a most disgraceful death, whom his own hand has not spared.

33Ele está, portanto, preso a uma grande massa e afundado no rio Tibre.

33He is therefore bound to a great mass, and sunk into the river Tiber.

34Mas os espíritos malignos e imundos em seu corpo maligno e imundo, todos regozijando-se juntos, continuaram se movendo nas águas, e de uma maneira terrível trouxeram relâmpagos e tempestades, trovões e tempestades de granizo, no ar, de modo que todos os homens foram mantidos em terrível medo.

34But malignant and filthy spirits in his malignant and filthy body, all rejoicing together, kept moving themselves in the waters, and in a terrible manner brought lightnings and tempests, thunders and hail-storms, in the air, so that all men were kept in horrible fear.

35Por isso os romanos, tirando-o do rio Tibre, em escárnio, levaram-no até Viena e afundaram-no no rio Ródano.

35Wherefore the Romans, drawing him out of the river Tiber, in derision carried him down to Vienna, and sunk him in the river Rhone.

36Pois Viena é chamada, por assim dizer, Via Gehennae, o caminho da Gehenna, porque era então um lugar de maldição.

36For Vienna is called, as it were, Via Gehennae, the way of Gehenna, because it was then a place of cursing.

37Mas ali estavam presentes espíritos malignos, trabalhando as mesmas coisas no mesmo lugar.

37But there evil spirits were present, working the same things in the same place.

38Aqueles homens, portanto, não suportando tal visitação de demônios, retiraram de si aquele vaso de maldição e o enviaram para ser enterrado no território de Losania.

38Those men therefore, not enduring such a visitation of demons, removed from themselves that vessel of malediction, and sent him to be buried in the territory of Losania.

39E eles, vendo que estavam perturbados pelas mencionadas visitações, retiraram-no de si mesmos e afundaram-no num certo poço cercado por montanhas, onde até hoje, segundo o relato de alguns, certas maquinações diabólicas supostamente borbulham.

39And they, seeing that they were troubled by the aforesaid visitations, removed him from themselves, and sunk him in a certain pit surrounded by mountains, where to this day, according to the account of some, certain diabolical machinations are said to bubble up.
