Mateus 14

1Naquele tempo ouviu Herodes, o tetrarca, a fama de Jesus,

1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, {tetrarch: or, governor over four provinces}

2E disse aos seus criados: Este é João o Batista; ressuscitou dos mortos, e por isso estas maravilhas operam nele.

2And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. {do...: or, are wrought by him}

3Porque Herodes tinha prendido João, e tinha-o maniatado e encerrado no cárcere, por causa de Herodias, mulher de seu irmão Filipe;

3For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put {him} in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

4Porque João lhe dissera: Não te é lícito possuí-la.

4For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

5E, querendo matá-lo, temia o povo; porque o tinham como profeta.

5And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

6Festejando-se, porém, o dia natalício de Herodes, dançou a filha de Herodias diante dele, e agradou a Herodes.

6But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. {before...: Gr. in the midst}

7Por isso prometeu, com juramento, dar-lhe tudo o que pedisse;

7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

8E ela, instruída previamente por sua mãe, disse: Dá-me aqui, num prato, a cabeça de João o Batista.

8And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

9E o rei afligiu-se, mas, por causa do juramento, e dos que estavam à mesa com ele, ordenou que se lhe desse.

9And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded {it} to be given {her}.

10E mandou degolar João no cárcere.

10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

11E a sua cabeça foi trazida num prato, e dada à jovem, e ela a levou a sua mãe.

11And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought {it} to her mother.

12E chegaram os seus discípulos, e levaram o corpo, e o sepultaram; e foram anunciá-lo a Jesus.

12And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

13E Jesus, ouvindo isto, retirou-se dali num barco, para um lugar deserto, apartado; e, sabendo-o o povo, seguiu-o a pé desde as cidades.

13When Jesus heard {of it}, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard {thereof}, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

14E, Jesus, saindo, viu uma grande multidão, e possuído de íntima compaixão para com ela, curou os seus enfermos.

14And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

15E, sendo chegada a tarde, os seus discípulos aproximaram-se dele, dizendo: O lugar é deserto, e a hora é já avançada; despede a multidão, para que vão pelas aldeias, e comprem comida para si.

15And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

16Jesus, porém, lhes disse: Não é mister que vão; dai-lhes vós de comer.

16But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

17Então eles lhe disseram: Não temos aqui senão cinco pães e dois peixes.

17And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

18E ele disse: Trazei-mos aqui.

18He said, Bring them hither to me.

19E, tendo mandado que a multidão se assentasse sobre a erva, tomou os cinco pães e os dois peixes, e, erguendo os olhos ao céu, os abençoou, e, partindo os pães, deu-os aos discípulos, e os discípulos à multidão.

19And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to {his} disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

20E comeram todos, e saciaramse; e levantaram dos pedaços, que sobejaram, doze alcofas cheias.

20And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

21E os que comeram foram quase cinco mil homens, além das mulheres e crianças.

21And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

22E logo ordenou Jesus que os seus discípulos entrassem no barco, e fossem adiante para o outro lado, enquanto despedia a multidão.

22And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23E, despedida a multidão, subiu ao monte para orar, à parte. E, chegada já a tarde, estava ali só.

23And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24E o barco estava já no meio do mar, açoitado pelas ondas; porque o vento era contrário;

24But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25Mas, à quarta vigília da noite, dirigiu-se Jesus para eles, andan-do por cima do mar.

25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26E os discípulos, vendo-o an-dando sobre o mar, assustaram-se, dizendo: É um fantasma. E gritaram com medo.

26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27Jesus, porém, lhes falou logo, dizendo: Tende bom ânimo, sou eu, não temais.

27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28E respondeu-lhe Pedro, e disse: Senhor, se és tu, manda-me ir ter contigo por cima das águas.

28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29E ele disse: Vem. E Pedro, descendo do barco, andou sobre as águas para ir ter com Jesus.

29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30Mas, sentindo o vento forte, teve medo; e, começando a ir para o fundo, clamou, dizendo: Senhor, salva-me!

30But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. {boisterous: or, strong}

31E logo Jesus, estendendo a mão, segurou-o, e disse-lhe: Homem de pouca fé, por que duvidaste?

31And immediately Jesus stretched forth {his} hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32E, quando subiram para o barco, acalmou o vento.

32And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33Então aproximaram-se os que estavam no barco, e adoraram-no, dizendo: És verdadeiramente o Filho de Deus.

33Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

34E, tendo passado para o outro lado, chegaram à terra de Genesaré.

34And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

35E, quando os homens daquele lugar o conheceram, mandaram por todas aquelas terras em redor e trouxeram-lhe todos os que estavam enfermos.

35And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

36E rogavam-lhe que ao menos eles pudessem tocar a orla da sua roupa; e todos os que a tocavam ficavam sãos.

36And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
