1Chapter 3 — The constancy of Germanicus.

2A morte de Policarpo é exigida.

2The death of Polycarp is demanded.

3Pois o diabo realmente inventou muitas coisas contra eles; mas graças a Deus, ele não conseguiu prevalecer sobre todos.

3For the devil did indeed invent many things against them; but thanks be to God, he could not prevail over all.

4Pois o nobre Germânico fortaleceu a timidez dos outros com sua própria paciência e lutou heroicamente contra as feras.

4For the most noble Germanicus strengthened the timidity of others by his own patience, and fought heroically with the wild beasts.

5Pois, quando o procônsul tentou persuadi-lo e instou-o a ter pena de sua idade, ele atraiu para si a fera e a provocou, desejando escapar ainda mais rapidamente de um mundo injusto e ímpio.

5For, when the proconsul sought to persuade him, and urged him to take pity upon his age, he attracted the wild beast towards himself, and provoked it, being desirous to escape all the more quickly from an unrighteous and impious world.

6Mas diante disso toda a multidão, maravilhada com a nobreza de espírito demonstrada pela raça devota e piedosa dos cristãos, gritou: "Fora os ateus; deixe Policarpo ser procurado!".

6But upon this the whole multitude, marvelling at the nobility of mind displayed by the devout and godly race of Christians, cried out, "Away with the Atheists; let Polycarp be sought out!".
