1Capítulo 18 — O corpo de Policarpo é queimado.

1Chapter 18 — The body of Polycarp is burned.

2O centurião então, vendo a contenda provocada pelos judeus, colocou o corpo no meio do fogo e o consumiu.

2The centurion then, seeing the strife excited by the Jews, placed the body in the midst of the fire, and consumed it.

3Assim, posteriormente pegamos os seus ossos, por serem mais preciosos que as mais preciosas jóias, e mais purificados que o ouro, e os depositamos num lugar apropriado, onde, estando reunidos, conforme a oportunidade nos for permitida, com alegria e regozijo, o Senhor nos concederá celebrar o aniversário do seu martírio, tanto em memória daqueles que já terminaram a sua carreira, como para o exercício e preparação daqueles que ainda vão seguir os seus passos.

3Accordingly, we afterwards took up his bones, as being more precious than the most exquisite jewels, and more purified than gold, and deposited them in a fitting place, whither, being gathered together, as opportunity is allowed us, with joy and rejoicing, the Lord shall grant us to celebrate the anniversary of his martyrdom, both in memory of those who have already finished their course, and for the exercising and preparation of those yet to walk in their steps.
