1Capítulo 13 — A pilha funerária é erguida.

1Chapter 13 — The funeral pile is erected.

2Isto, então, foi levado a efeito com maior rapidez do que foi dito, as multidões imediatamente juntaram lenha e lenha nas lojas e nos banhos; especialmente os judeus, de acordo com o costume, ajudando-os ansiosamente nisso.

2This, then, was carried into effect with greater speed than it was spoken, the multitudes immediately gathering together wood and fagots out of the shops and baths; the Jews especially, according to custom, eagerly assisting them in it.

3E quando a pira funerária ficou pronta, Policarpo, deixando de lado todas as suas vestes e afrouxando o cinto, procurou também tirar as sandálias, coisa que não estava acostumado a fazer, visto que cada um dos fiéis estava sempre ansioso para saber quem tocaria primeiro sua pele.

3And when the funeral pile was ready, Polycarp, laying aside all his garments, and loosing his girdle, sought also to take off his sandals,—a thing he was not accustomed to do, inasmuch as every one of the faithful was always eager who should first touch his skin.

4Pois, por causa de sua vida santa, ele era, mesmo antes de seu martírio, adornado com todo tipo de bem.

4For, on account of his holy life, he was, even before his martyrdom, adorned with every kind of good.

5Imediatamente então o cercaram com as substâncias que haviam sido preparadas para a pira funerária.

5Immediately then they surrounded him with those substances which had been prepared for the funeral pile.

6Mas quando também estavam prestes a fixá-lo com pregos, ele disse: “Deixe-me como estou; pois Aquele que me dá forças para suportar o fogo, também me permitirá, sem que você me prenda com pregos, permanecer imóvel na pilha”.

6But when they were about also to fix him with nails, he said, "Leave me as I am; for He that giveth me strength to endure the fire, will also enable me, without your securing me by nails, to remain without moving in the pile".
