1Capítulo 11 — Nenhuma ameaça tem qualquer efeito sobre Policarpo.

1Chapter 11 — No threats have any effect on Polycarp.

2O procônsul disse-lhe então: “Tenho animais selvagens à mão; a estes te lançarei, a menos que te arrependas”.

2The proconsul then said to him, "I have wild beasts at hand; to these will I cast thee, except thou repent".

3Mas ele respondeu: “Chama-os então, porque não estamos acostumados a nos arrepender do que é bom para adotar o que é mau; e é bom que eu seja mudado do que é mau para o que é justo”.

3But he answered, "Call them then, for we are not accustomed to repent of what is good in order to adopt that which is evil; and it is well for me to be changed from what is evil to what is righteous".

4Mas novamente o procônsul lhe disse: “Farei que sejas consumido pelo fogo, visto que desprezas as feras, se não te arrependeres”.

4But again the proconsul said to him, "I will cause thee to be consumed by fire, seeing thou despisest the wild beasts, if thou wilt not repent".

5Mas Policarpo disse: “Tu me ameaças com um fogo que arde por uma hora e depois de um pouco se extingue, mas ignoras o fogo do julgamento vindouro e do castigo eterno, reservado aos ímpios.

5But Polycarp said, "Thou threatenest me with fire which burneth for an hour, and after a little is extinguished, but art ignorant of the fire of the coming judgment and of eternal punishment, reserved for the ungodly.

6Mas por que você demora? Traz o que queres".

6But why tarriest thou? Bring forth what thou wilt".
