Martírio de Policarpo 1

1A Epístola Encíclica da Igreja de Esmirna sobre o Martírio do Santo Policarpo A Igreja de Deus que reside em Esmirna, à Igreja de Deus que reside em Filomélio, e a todas as congregações da Santa e Católica Igreja em todos os lugares: Misericórdia, paz e amor de Deus Pai, e de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, sejam multiplicados.

1The Encyclical Epistle of the Church at Smyrna Concerning the Martyrdom of the Holy Polycarp The Church of God which sojourns at Smyrna, to the Church of God sojourning in Philomelium, and to all the congregations of the Holy and Catholic Church in every place: Mercy, peace, and love from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, be multiplied.

3Escrevemos-vos, irmãos, sobre o que se refere aos mártires, e especialmente ao bem-aventurado Policarpo, que pôs fim à perseguição, tendo-a, por assim dizer, selado com o seu martírio.

3We have written to you, brethren, as to what relates to the martyrs, and especially to the blessed Polycarp, who put an end to the persecution, having, as it were, set a seal upon it by his martyrdom.

4Pois quase todos os acontecimentos anteriores a este aconteceram para que o Senhor nos mostrasse do alto um martírio que se tornasse Evangelho.

4For almost all the events that happened previously to this one, took place that the Lord might show us from above a martyrdom becoming the Gospel.

5Pois ele esperou ser entregue, assim como o Senhor havia feito, para que também pudéssemos nos tornar seus seguidores, enquanto olhamos não apenas para o que nos diz respeito, mas também temos consideração pelos nossos próximos.

5For he waited to be delivered up, even as the Lord had done, that we also might become his followers, while we look not merely at what concerns ourselves but have regard also to our neighbours.

6Pois faz parte de um amor verdadeiro e fundado desejar não só a salvação de si mesmo, mas também de todos os irmãos.

6For it is the part of a true and well-founded love, not only to wish one's self to be saved, but also all the brethren.
