Martírio de Perpétua 1

1A História de Perpétua: E enquanto Paulo estava sendo levado para ser decapitado em um lugar a cerca de cinco quilômetros da cidade, ele estava acorrentado.

1The Story of Perpetua: And as Paul was being led away to be beheaded at a place about three miles from the city, he was in irons.

2E havia três soldados que o guardavam, que eram de uma grande família.

2And there were three soldiers guarding him who were of a great family.

3E quando eles saíram do portão com a distância aproximada de um tiro de arco, encontrou-os uma mulher temente a Deus; e ela, vendo Paulo arrastado em ferros, teve compaixão dele e chorou amargamente.

3And when they had gone out of the gate about the length of a bow-shot, there met them a God-fearing woman; and she, seeing Paul dragged along in irons, had compassion on him, and wept bitterly.

4E o nome da mulher foi chamada Perpétua; e ela tinha um olho só.

4And the name of the woman was called Perpetua; and she was one-eyed.

5E Paulo, vendo-a chorar, disse-lhe: Dá-me o teu lenço, e quando eu voltar, to darei.

5And Paul, seeing her weeping, says to her: Give me thy handkerchief, and when I turn back I shall give it to thee.

6E ela, tendo pegado o lenço, deu-lho de boa vontade.

6And she, having taken the handkerchief, gave it to him willingly.

7E os soldados riram e disseram à mulher: Por que queres, mulher, perder o teu lenço? Você não sabe que ele está indo embora para ser decapitado? E Perpétua disse-lhes: Conjuro-vos, pela saúde de César, a tapar-lhe os olhos com este lenço quando lhe cortares a cabeça.

7And the soldiers laughed, and said to the woman: Why dost thou wish, woman, to lose thy handkerchief? Knowest thou not that he is going away to be beheaded? And Perpetua said to them: I adjure you by the health of Caesar to bind his eyes with this handkerchief when you cut off his head.

8O que também foi feito.

8Which also was done.

9E decapitaram-no no lugar chamado Aquae Salviae, perto do pinheiro.

9And they beheaded him at the place called Aquae Salviae, near the pine tree.

10E como Deus quis, antes que os soldados voltassem, o lenço, contendo gotas de sangue, foi devolvido à mulher.

10And as God had willed, before the soldiers came back, the handkerchief, having on it drops of blood, was restored to the woman.

11E enquanto ela o carregava, imediatamente e imediatamente seu olho se abriu.

11And as she was carrying it, straightway and immediately her eye was opened.

12E os três soldados que haviam cortado a cabeça de São Paulo, quando depois de três horas chegaram no mesmo dia com a Bulla trazendo-a para Nero, tendo encontrado Perpétua, disseram-lhe: O que foi, mulher? Eis que pela tua confiança perdeste o teu lenço.

12And the three soldiers who had cut off the head of Saint Paul, when after three hours they came on the same day with the Bulla bringing it to Nero, having met Perpetua, they said to her: What is it, woman? Behold, by thy confidence thou hast lost thy handkerchief.

13Mas ela lhes disse: Ambos peguei meu lenço e meu olho recuperou a visão.

13But she said to them: I have both got my handkerchief, and my eye has recovered its sight.

14E como vive o Senhor, o Deus de Paulo, também eu lhe roguei para que eu seja considerado digno de me tornar escravo de seu Senhor.

14And as the Lord, the God of Paul, liveth, I also have entreated him that I may be deemed worthy to become the slave of his Lord.

15Então os soldados que tinham a Bulla, reconhecendo o lenço e vendo que o olho dela havia sido aberto, gritaram em alta voz, como se saísse de uma só boca, e disseram: Nós também somos escravos do mestre de Paulo.

15Then the soldiers who had the Bulla, recognising the handkerchief, and seeing that her eye had been opened, cried out with a loud voice, as if from one mouth, and said: We too are the slaves of Paul's master.

16Perpétua, portanto, tendo partido, relatou no palácio do imperador Nero que os soldados que haviam decapitado Paulo disseram: Não iremos mais à cidade, porque acreditamos em Cristo que Paulo pregou, e somos cristãos.

16Perpetua therefore having gone away, reported in the palace of the Emperor Nero that the soldiers who had beheaded Paul said: We shall no longer go into the city, for we believe in Christ whom Paul preached, and we are Christians.

17Então Nero, cheio de raiva, ordenou que Perpétua, que o havia informado sobre os soldados, fosse mantida acorrentada; e quanto aos soldados, ele ordenou que um fosse decapitado fora do portão, a cerca de uma milha da cidade, outro cortado em dois e o terceiro apedrejado.

17Then Nero, filled with rage, ordered Perpetua, who had informed him of the soldiers, to be kept fast in irons; and as to the soldiers, he ordered one to be beheaded outside of the gate about one mile from the city, another to be cut in two, and the third to be stoned.

18E Perpétua estava na prisão; e nesta prisão foi mantida Potentiana, uma nobre donzela, porque ela havia dito: Abandono meus pais e todos os bens de meu pai, e desejo tornar-me cristã.

18And Perpetua was in the prison; and in this prison there was kept Potentiana, a noble maiden, because she had said: I forsake my parents and all the substance of my father, and I wish to become a Christian.

19Ela, portanto, juntou-se a Perpétua e averiguou dela tudo sobre Paulo, e estava muito preocupada com a fé em Cristo.

19She therefore joined herself to Perpetua, and ascertained from her everything about Paul, and was in much anxiety about the faith in Christ.

20E a esposa de Nero era irmã de Potentiana; e ela secretamente a informou sobre Cristo, que aqueles que acreditam Nele vêem a alegria eterna, e que tudo aqui é temporário, mas ali eterno: de modo que ela também fugiu do palácio, e algumas das esposas dos senadores com ela.

20And the wife of Nero was Potentiana's sister; and she secretly informed her about Christ, that those who believe in Him see everlasting joy, and that everything here is temporary, but there eternal: so that also she fled out of the palace, and some of the senators' wives with her.

21Então Nero, tendo infligido muitas torturas a Perpétua, finalmente amarrou uma grande pedra em seu pescoço e ordenou que ela fosse jogada num precipício.

21Then Nero, having inflicted many tortures upon Perpetua, at last tied a great stone to her neck, and ordered her to be thrown over a precipice.

22E seus restos mortais estão no portão Momentan.

22And her remains lie at the Momentan gate.

23E Potentiana também sofreu muitos tormentos; e por fim, tendo feito um dia uma fornalha, queimaram-na.

23And Potentiana also underwent many torments; and at last, having made a furnace one day, they burned her.
