José e Asenete 7

1E José entrou na casa de Pentefres e sentou-se numa cadeira. E lavaram-lhe os pés, e puseram-lhe uma mesa separada diante dele, porque José não comia com os egípcios, visto que isto lhe era abominável.

1And Joseph came into the house of Pentephres and sat upon a chair. And they washed his feet, and set a table before him separately, for that Joseph did not eat with the Egyptians, since this was an abomination to him.

2E José olhou para cima e viu Asenath espiando, e disse a Pentephres: "Quem é aquela mulher que está parada no sótão perto da janela? Deixe-a sair desta casa." Pois José temia, dizendo: “Para que ela mesma também não me aborreça”.

2And Joseph looked up and saw Asenath peeping out, and he saith to Pentephres: "Who is that woman who is standing in the loft by the window? Let her go away from this house." For Joseph feared, saying: "Lest she herself also annoy me."

3Pois todas as esposas e filhas dos príncipes e os sátrapas de toda a terra do Egito costumavam incomodá-lo para que pudessem deitar-se com ele; mas também muitas esposas e filhas dos egípcios, todas as que viram José, ficaram angustiadas por causa de sua beleza; e os enviados que as mulheres lhe enviaram com ouro, prata e presentes preciosos, José enviou de volta com ameaças e insultos, dizendo: "Não pecarei diante do Senhor Deus e diante de meu pai Israel".

3For all the wives and daughters of the princes and the satraps of all the land of Egypt used to annoy him in order that they might lie with him; but many wives and daughters of the Egyptians also, as many as beheld Joseph, were distressed on account of his beauty; and the envoys whom the women sent to him with gold and silver and precious gifts Joseph sent back with threatening and insult, saying: "I will not sin in the sight of the Lord God and the face of my father Israel."

4Pois José tinha Deus sempre diante de seus olhos e sempre se lembrava das injunções de seu pai; pois Jacó frequentemente falava e admoestava seu filho José e todos os seus filhos: "Mantenham-se, filhos, longe de uma mulher estranha, para não terem comunhão com ela, pois a comunhão com ela é ruína e destruição." Portanto José disse: “Deixa essa mulher sair desta casa”.

4For Joseph had God always before his eyes and ever remembered the injunctions of his father; for Jacob often spake and admonished his son Joseph and all his sons: "Keep yourselves, children, securely from a strange woman so as not to have fellowship with her, for fellowship with her is ruin and destruction." Therefore Joseph said: "Let that woman depart from this house."

5E Pentefres disse-lhe: "Meu senhor, aquela mulher que você viu parada no sótão não é uma estranha, mas é nossa filha, alguém que odeia todos os homens, e nenhum outro homem jamais a viu, exceto você apenas hoje; e, se desejar, senhor, ela virá e falará contigo, pois nossa filha é como sua irmã."

5And Pentephres said to him: "My lord, that woman whom thou hast seen standing in the loft is not a stranger, but is our daughter, one who hateth every man, and no other man hath ever seen her save thou only to-day; and, if thou wishest, lord, she shall come and speak to thee, for that our daughter is as thy sister."

6E José regozijou-se com grande alegria, pois Pentefres disse: “Ela é uma virgem que odeia todos os homens”. E José disse a Pentefres e sua esposa: "Se ela é sua filha e é virgem, deixe-a vir, pois ela é minha irmã, e eu a amo desde hoje como minha irmã."

6And Joseph rejoiced with exceeding great joy, for that Pentephres said: "She is a virgin hating every man." And Joseph said to Pentephres and his wife: "If she is your daughter, and is a virgin, let her come, for that she is my sister, and I love her from to-day as my sister."
