José e Asenete 28

1E os filhos de Balla e Zelpha, quando viram o estranho milagre que havia sido realizado, temeram e disseram: "O Senhor luta contra nós em nome de Asenath."

1And the sons of Balla and Zelpha, when they saw the strange miracle that had been wrought, feared and said: "The Lord fighteth against us on Asenath's behalf."

2Então eles caíram com o rosto no chão e prestaram homenagem a Asenath e disseram: "Tem piedade de nós, teus servos, pois tu és nossa senhora e rainha. Cometemos más ações contra ti e contra nosso irmão José, mas o Senhor nos retribuiu de acordo com nossas obras. Portanto, nós, teus servos, rogamos a ti, tenha misericórdia de nós, os humildes e miseráveis, e livra-nos das mãos de nossos irmãos, pois assim eles se tornarão vingadores do apesar do que foi feito a ti e suas espadas estão contra nós, portanto, seja gentil com seus servos, senhora, diante deles.

2Then they fell upon their faces on the earth and made obeisance to Asenath and said: "Have mercy on us thy bondmen, for that thou art our mistress and queen. We wickedly committed evil deeds against thee and against our brother Joseph, but the Lord requited us according to our works. Therefore we thy bondmen pray thee, have mercy on us the lowly and miserable and deliver us from the hands of our brethren, for that they will make themselves avengers of the despite done to thee and their swords are against us. Accordingly be gracious to thy bondmen, mistress, before them."

3E Asenath disse-lhes: "Tende bom ânimo e não tenhais medo de vossos irmãos, pois eles próprios são homens que adoram a Deus e temem ao Senhor; mas vão para o matagal desses juncos até que eu os apazigue em seu nome e detenha sua ira por causa dos grandes crimes que vocês, de sua parte, ousaram cometer contra eles. Mas o Senhor vê e julga entre mim e você."

3And Asenath said to them: "Be of good cheer and be not ye afraid of your brethren, for that they themselves are men who worship God and fear the Lord; but go into the thicket of these reeds until I shall appease them on your behalf and stay their wrath on account of the great crimes which ye on your part have dared to commit against them. But the Lord see and judge between me and you."

4Então Dã e Gade fugiram para o matagal dos juncos; e seus irmãos, filhos de Lia, vieram correndo como veados e com grande pressa contra eles.

4Then Dan and Gad fled into the thicket of the reeds; and their brethren, Leah's sons, came running like stags with great haste against them.

5E Asenath desceu da carruagem que era seu abrigo e deu-lhes a mão direita com lágrimas, e eles próprios caíram e prestaram homenagem a ela na terra e choraram em alta voz; e continuaram a pedir a seus irmãos, os filhos das servas, que os matassem.

5And Asenath stepped down from the chariot that was her covert and gave them her right hand with tears, and they themselves fell down and made obeisance to her on the earth and wept with a loud voice; and they continued asking for their brethren the sons of the handmaids to put them to death.

6E Asenath disse-lhes: "Peço-vos que poupem seus irmãos e não lhes paguem mal com mal. Pois o Senhor me salvou deles e despedaçou suas adagas e espadas de suas mãos, e eis que eles derreteram e foram queimados em cinzas sobre a terra como cera diante do fogo, e isso é suficiente para nós que o Senhor lute por nós contra eles. Portanto, poupem seus irmãos, pois eles são seus irmãos e o sangue de seu pai Israel."

6And Asenath said to them: "I pray you, spare your brethren, and render not to them evil for evil. For the Lord saved me from them and shattered their daggers and swords from out their hands, and lo! they have melted and were burned to ashes upon the earth like wax from before fire, and this is sufficient for us that the Lord fighteth for us against them. Accordingly do ye spare your brethren, for that they are your brethren and the blood of your father Israel."

7E Simeão disse-lhe: "Por que fala a nossa senhora boas palavras em nome de seus inimigos? Não, antes, nós os cortaremos membro por membro com nossas espadas, porque eles planejaram coisas más a respeito de nosso irmão José e de nosso pai Israel e contra ti, nossa senhora, hoje."

7And Simeon said to her: "Wherefore speaketh our mistress good words on behalf of her enemies? Nay but rather we will cut them down limb from limb with our swords, for that they devised evil things concerning our brother Joseph and our father Israel and against thee, our mistress, to-day."

8Então Asenath estendeu a mão direita e tocou a barba de Simeão e beijou-o com ternura e disse: "De maneira alguma, irmão, retribua mal com mal ao teu próximo, para que o Senhor vingará esse despeito. Eles próprios, você sabe, são seus irmãos e descendência de seu pai Israel, e fugiram de longe de sua face. Portanto, conceda-lhes perdão."

8Then Asenath stretched out her right hand and touched Simeon's beard and kissed him tenderly and said: "In no wise, brother, render evil for evil to thy neighbour, for that the Lord will avenge this despite. They themselves, ye know, are your brethren and the offspring of your father Israel, and they fled from afar from your face. Accordingly grant them pardon."

9Então Levi se aproximou dela e beijou sua mão direita com ternura, pois sabia que ela estava disposta a salvar os homens da ira de seus irmãos para que não os matassem.

9Then Levi came up to her and kissed her right hand tenderly, for that he knew that she was fain to save the men from their brethren's anger that they should not slay them.

10E eles mesmos estavam perto, no matagal do canavial; e Levi, seu irmão, sabendo disso, não o contou a seus irmãos, pois temia que, em sua ira, eles matassem seus irmãos.

10And they themselves were nigh at hand in the thicket of the reed-bed: and Levi his brother knowing this did not declare it to his brethren, for he feared lest in their anger they should cut their brethren down.
