José e Asenete 1

1No primeiro ano de fartura, no segundo mês, no quinto dia do mês, Faraó enviou José para percorrer toda a terra do Egito; e no quarto mês do primeiro ano, no décimo oitavo dia do mês, José chegou às fronteiras de Heliópolis, e estava colhendo o milho daquele país como a areia do mar.

1In the first year of plenty, in the second month, on the fifth of the month, Pharaoh sent Joseph to go round all the land of Egypt; and in the fourth month of the first year, on the eighteenth of the month, Joseph came to the borders of Heliopolis, and he was gathering the corn of that country as the sand of the sea.

2E havia naquela cidade um certo homem chamado Pentefres, que era sacerdote de Heliópolis e sátrapa de Faraó, e chefe de todos os sátrapas e príncipes de Faraó; e este homem era extremamente rico e muito sábio e gentil, e ele também era conselheiro de Faraó, porque era mais prudente do que todos os príncipes de Faraó.

2And there was a certain man in that city by the name Pentephres, who was a priest of Heliopolis and a satrap of Pharaoh, and chief of all Pharaoh's satraps and princes; and this man was exceedingly rich and very sage and gentle, and he was also a counsellor of Pharaoh, because he was prudent beyond all Pharaoh's princes.

3E ele tinha uma filha virgem, chamada Asenath, de dezoito anos, alta e atraente, e bela de se ver muito além de qualquer virgem na terra.

3And he had a virgin daughter, by name Asenath, of eighteen years, tall and comely, and beautiful to behold exceedingly beyond every virgin upon the earth.

4Ora, a própria Asenath não tinha nenhuma semelhança com as virgens, as filhas dos egípcios, mas era em todas as coisas como as filhas dos hebreus, sendo alta como Sara e graciosa como Rebeca e bela como Raquel;

4Now Asenath herself bore no likeness to the virgins, the daughters of the Egyptians, but was in all things like the daughters of the Hebrews, being tall as Sarah and comely as Rebecca and beautiful as Rachel;

5e a fama de sua beleza se espalhou por toda aquela terra e até os confins do mundo, de modo que por causa disso todos os filhos dos príncipes e dos sátrapas desejaram cortejá-la, ou melhor, e os filhos dos reis também, todos jovens e poderosos, e houve grande conflito entre eles por causa dela, e eles tentaram lutar uns contra os outros.

5and the fame of her beauty spread abroad into all that land and unto the ends of the world, so that by reason of this all the sons of the princes and the satraps desired to woo her, nay, and the sons of the kings also, all young men and mighty, and there was great strife among them because of her, and they essayed to fight against one another.

6E o filho primogênito do Faraó também ouviu falar dela, e continuou suplicando a seu pai que lhe desse como esposa e dizendo-lhe: "Dê-me, pai, Asenath, filha de Pentephres, o primeiro homem de Heliópolis, como esposa."

6And Pharaoh's firstborn son also heard about her, and he continued entreating his father to give her to him to wife and saying to him: "Give me, father, Asenath, the daughter of Pentephres, the first man of Heliopolis to wife."

7E Faraó, seu pai, disse-lhe: "Por que procuras, de tua parte, uma esposa inferior a ti, quando és rei de toda esta terra? Não, mas eis! A filha de Joacim, rei de Moabe, está desposada contigo, e ela mesma é uma rainha e extremamente bela de se ver. Toma então esta para ti como esposa."

7And his father Pharaoh said to him: "Wherefore dost thou on thy part seek a wife lower than thyself when thou art king of all this land? Nay, but lo! the daughter of Joacim the King of Moab is betrothed to thee, and she herself is a queen and beautiful to behold exceedingly. Take then this one to thyself to wife."
