Jeremias 5

1Dai voltas às ruas de Jerusalém, e vede agora; e informai-vos, e buscai pelas suas praças, a ver se achais alguém, ou se há homem que pratique a justiça ou busque a verdade; e eu lhe perdoarei.

1Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be {any} that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.

2E ainda que digam: Vive o Senhor, de certo falsamente juram.

2And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.

3Ah Senhor, porventura não atentam os teus olhos para a verdade? Feriste-os, e não lhes doeu; consumiste-os, e não quiseram receber a correção; endureceram as suas faces mais do que uma rocha; não quiseram voltar.

3O LORD, {are} not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, {but} they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

4Eu, porém, disse: Deveras estes são pobres; são loucos, pois não sabem o caminho do Senhor, nem o juízo do seu Deus.

4Therefore I said, Surely these {are} poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, {nor} the judgment of their God.

5Irei aos grandes, e falarei com eles; porque eles sabem o caminho do Senhor, o juízo do seu Deus; mas estes juntamente quebraram o jugo, e romperam as ataduras.

5I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, {and} the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, {and} burst the bonds.

6Por isso um leão do bosque os feriu, um lobo dos desertos os assolará; um leopardo vigia contra as suas cidades; qualquer que sair delas será despedaçado; porque as suas transgressões se avolumam, multiplicaram-se as suas apostasias.

6Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, {and} a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, {and} their backslidings are increased. {evenings: or, deserts} {are increased: Heb. are strong}

7Como, vendo isto, te perdoaria? Teus filhos me deixam a mim e juram pelos que não são deuses; quando os fartei, então adulteraram, e em casa de meretrizes se ajuntaram em bandos.

7How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by {them that are} no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses.

8Como cavalos bem fartos, levantam-se pela manhã, rinchando cada um à mulher do seu próximo.

8They were {as} fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.

9Deixaria eu de castigar por estas coisas, diz o Senhor, ou não se vingaria a minha alma de uma nação como esta?

9Shall I not visit for these {things}? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

10Subi aos seus muros, e destruí-os (porém não façais uma destruição final); tirai os seus ramos, porque não são do Senhor.

10Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they {are} not the LORD'S.

11Porque aleivosissimamente se houveram contra mim a casa de Israel e a casa de Judá, diz o Senhor.

11For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.

12Negaram ao Senhor, e disseram: Não é ele; nem mal nos sobrevirá, nem veremos espada nem fome.

12They have belied the LORD, and said, {It is} not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

13E até os profetas serão como vento, porque a palavra não está com eles; assim se lhes sucederá.

13And the prophets shall become wind, and the word {is} not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

14Portanto assim diz o Senhor Deus dos Exércitos: Porquanto disseste tal palavra, eis que converterei as minhas palavras na tua boca em fogo, e a este povo em lenha, eles serão consumidos.

14Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

15Eis que trarei sobre vós uma nação de longe, ó casa de Israel, diz o Senhor; é uma nação robusta, é uma nação antiqüíssima, uma nação cuja língua ignorarás, e não entenderás o que ela falar.

15Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it {is} a mighty nation, it {is} an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

16A sua aljava é como uma sepultura aberta; todos eles são poderosos.

16Their quiver {is} as an open sepulchre, they {are} all mighty men.

17E comerão a tua sega e o teu pão, que teus filhos e tuas filhas haviam de comer; comerão as tuas ovelhas e as tuas vacas; comerão a tua vide e a tua figueira; as tuas cidades fortificadas, em que confiavas, abatê-las-ão à espada.

17And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, {which} thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.

18Contudo, ainda naqueles dias, diz o Senhor, não farei de vós uma destruição final.

18Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.

19E sucederá que, quando disserdes: Por que nos fez o Senhor nosso Deus todas estas coisas? Então lhes dirás: Como vós me deixastes, e servistes a deuses estranhos na vossa terra, assim servireis a estrangeiros, em terra que não é vossa.

19And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these {things} unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land {that is} not yours.

20Anunciai isto na casa de Jacó, e fazei-o ouvir em Judá, dizendo:

20Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,

21Ouvi agora isto, ó povo insensato, e sem coração, que tendes olhos e não vedes, que tendes ouvidos e não ouvis.

21Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: {understanding: Heb. heart}

22Porventura não me temereis a mim? diz o Senhor; não temereis diante de mim, que pus a areia por limite ao mar, por ordenança eterna, que ele não traspassará? Ainda que se levantem as suas ondas, não prevalecerão; ainda que bramem, não a traspassarão.

22Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand {for} the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

23Mas este povo é de coração rebelde e pertinaz: rebelaram-se e foram-se.

23But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.

24E não dizem no seu coração: Temamos agora ao Senhor nosso Deus, que dá chuva, a temporã e a tardia, ao seu tempo; e nos conserva as semanas determinadas da sega.

24Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

25As vossas iniqüidades desviam estas coisas, e os vossos pecados apartam de vós o bem.

25Your iniquities have turned away these {things}, and your sins have withholden good {things} from you.

26Porque ímpios se acham entre o meu povo; andam espiando, como quem arma laços; põem armadilhas, com que prendem os homens.

26For among my people are found wicked {men}: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. {they lay...: or, they pry as fowlers lie in wait}

27Como uma gaiola está cheia de pássaros, assim as suas casas estão cheias de engano; por isso se engrandeceram, e enriqueceram;

27As a cage is full of birds, so {are} their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. {cage: or, coop}

28Engordam-se, estão nédios, e ultrapassam até os feitos dos malignos; não julgam a causa do órfão; todavia prosperam; nem julgam o direito dos necessitados.

28They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

29Porventura não castigaria eu por causa destas coisas? diz o Senhor; não me vingaria eu de uma nação como esta?

29Shall I not visit for these {things}? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

30Coisa espantosa e horrenda se anda fazendo na terra.

30A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; {A wonderful...: or, Astonishment and filthiness}

31Os profetas profetizam falsamente, e os sacerdotes dominam pelas mãos deles, e o meu povo assim o deseja; mas que fareis ao fim disto?

31The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love {to have it} so: and what will ye do in the end thereof? {bear...: or, take into their hands}
