1Capítulo 4 — Preciso de humildade.

1Chapter 4 — I have need of humility.

2Tenho grande conhecimento em Deus, mas me contenho, para não perecer por me vangloriar.

2I have great knowledge in God, but I restrain myself, lest, I should perish through boasting.

3Por enquanto é necessário que eu tenha mais medo; e não dê ouvidos aos que me ensoberbecem.

3For now it is needful for me to be the more fearful; and not give heed to those that puff me up.

4Pois aqueles que falam comigo em forma de elogio me açoitam.

4For they that speak to me in the way of commendation scourge me.

5Pois realmente desejo sofrer, mas não sei se sou digno de fazê-lo.

5For I do indeed desire to suffer, but I know not if I be worthy to do so.

6Pois esse anseio, embora não seja manifesto para muitos, me assalta ainda mais veementemente.

6For this longing, though it is not manifest to many, all the more vehemently assails me.

7Portanto, tenho necessidade de mansidão, pela qual o príncipe deste mundo é reduzido a nada.

7I therefore have need of meekness, by which the prince of this world is brought to nought.

8Mas eu me medi, para não perecer de orgulho; mas é bom gloriar-me no Senhor.

8But I measure myself, that I may not perish through boasting: but it is good to glory in the Lord.

9E embora eu estivesse estabelecido nas coisas pertencentes a Deus, ainda assim seria apropriado que eu fosse ainda mais temeroso e não desse ouvidos àqueles que em vão me inflam.

9And even though I were established in things pertaining to God, yet then would it befit me to be the more fearful, and not give heed to those that vainly puff me up.

10Pois aqueles que me elogiam me flagelam.

10For those that commend me scourge me.

11De fato desejo sofrer, mas não sei se sou digno de fazê-lo.

11I do indeed desire to suffer, but I know not if I be worthy to do so.

12Pois a inveja do maligno não é visível para muitos, mas ela guerreia contra mim.

12For the envy of the wicked one is not visible to many, but it wars against me.

13Portanto, tenho necessidade de mansidão, pela qual o diabo, o príncipe deste mundo, é reduzido a nada.

13I therefore have need of meekness, by which the devil, the prince of this world, is brought to nought.
