1Chapter 4 — Have but one Eucharist, etc.

2Tome cuidado, então, para ter apenas uma Eucaristia.

2Take ye heed, then, to have but one Eucharist.

3Pois há uma só carne de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo e um cálice para manifestar a unidade do Seu sangue; um altar; como há um só bispo, juntamente com o presbitério e os diáconos, meus conservos: para que tudo o que fizerdes, o façais segundo a vontade de Deus.

3For there is one flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ, and one cup to show forth the unity of His blood; one altar; as there is one bishop, along with the presbytery and deacons, my fellow-servants: that so, whatsoever ye do, ye may do it according to the will of God.

4Tenho confiança em você no Senhor, que você não terá outra opinião.

4I have confidence of you in the Lord, that ye will be of no other mind.

5Por isso escrevo com ousadia ao vosso amor, que é digno de Deus, e exorto-vos a ter apenas uma fé, e um tipo de pregação, e uma só Eucaristia.

5Wherefore I write boldly to your love, which is worthy of God, and exhort you to have but one faith, and one kind of preaching, and one Eucharist.

6Porque há uma só carne do Senhor Jesus Cristo; e Seu sangue que foi derramado por nós é um; um pão também é partido a todos os comungantes, e um copo é distribuído entre todos eles: há apenas um altar para toda a Igreja, e um bispo, com o presbitério e os diáconos, meus conservos.

6For there is one flesh of the Lord Jesus Christ; and His blood which was shed for us is one; one loaf also is broken to all the communicants, and one cup is distributed among them all: there is but one altar for the whole Church, and one bishop, with the presbytery and deacons, my fellow-servants.

7Visto que, também, existe apenas um Ser não gerado, Deus, até mesmo o Pai; e um Filho unigênito, Deus, o Verbo e o homem; e um Consolador, o Espírito da verdade; e também uma só pregação, e uma só fé, e um só batismo; e uma Igreja que os santos apóstolos estabeleceram de um extremo ao outro da terra pelo sangue de Cristo e por seu próprio suor e trabalho; cabe a você também, portanto, como “um povo peculiar e uma nação santa”, realizar todas as coisas com harmonia em Cristo.

7Since, also, there is but one unbegotten Being, God, even the Father; and one only-begotten Son, God, the Word and man; and one Comforter, the Spirit of truth; and also one preaching, and one faith, and one baptism; and one Church which the holy apostles established from one end of the earth to the other by the blood of Christ, and by their own sweat and toil; it behoves you also, therefore, as "a peculiar people, and a holy nation," to perform all things with harmony in Christ.

8Esposas, sejam sujeitas a seus maridos no temor de Deus; e vós, virgens, a Cristo em pureza, não considerando o casamento uma abominação, mas desejando o que é melhor, não para a reprovação do casamento, mas para meditar na lei.

8Wives, be ye subject to your husbands in the fear of God; and ye virgins, to Christ in purity, not counting marriage an abomination, but desiring that which is better, not for the reproach of wedlock, but for the sake of meditating on the law.

9Filhos, obedeçam aos seus pais e tenham carinho por eles, como colaboradores de Deus para o seu nascimento no mundo.

9Children, obey your parents, and have an affection for them, as workers together with God for your birth into the world.

10Servos, sujeitem-se aos seus senhores em Deus, para que sejam libertos de Cristo.

10Servants, be subject to your masters in God, that ye may be the freed-men of Christ.

11Maridos, amem suas esposas, como conservas de Deus, como seu próprio corpo, como parceiras de sua vida e suas coadjuvantes na procriação dos filhos.

11Husbands, love your wives, as fellow-servants of God, as your own body, as the partners of your life, and your co-adjutors in the procreation of children.

12Virgens, tenham somente Cristo diante de seus olhos e Seu Pai em suas orações, sendo iluminados pelo Espírito.

12Virgins, have Christ alone before your eyes, and His Father in your prayers, being enlightened by the Spirit.

13Que eu tenha prazer em sua pureza, como a de Elias, ou como a de Josué, filho de Num, como a de Melquisedeque, ou como a de Eliseu, como a de Jeremias, ou como a de João Batista, como a do discípulo amado, como a de Timóteo, como a de Tito, como a de Evódio, como a de Clemente, que partiu desta vida em perfeita castidade.

13May I have pleasure in your purity, as that of Elijah, or as of Joshua the son of Nun, as of Melchizedek, or as of Elisha, as of Jeremiah, or as of John the Baptist, as of the beloved disciple, as of Timothy, as of Titus, as of Evodius, as of Clement, who departed this life in perfect chastity, Not, however, that I blame the other blessed saints because they entered into the married state, of which I have just spoken.

14Pois rogo para que, sendo considerado digno de Deus, eu possa ser encontrado aos pés deles no reino, como aos pés de Abraão, de Isaque e de Jacó; como de José, e Isaías, e o resto dos profetas; como Pedro, Paulo e os demais apóstolos, que eram homens casados.

14For I pray that, being found worthy of God, I may be found at their feet in the kingdom, as at the feet of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob; as of Joseph, and Isaiah, and the rest of the prophets; as of Peter, and Paul, and the rest of the apostles, that were married men.

15Pois eles celebraram esses casamentos não por questão de apetite, mas por consideração à propagação da humanidade.

15For they entered into these marriages not for the sake of appetite, but out of regard for the propagation of mankind.

16Pais, "criem seus filhos na disciplina e na admoestação do Senhor"; e ensine-lhes as Sagradas Escrituras e também os ofícios, para que não se entreguem à ociosidade.

16Fathers, "bring up your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord;" and teach them the holy Scriptures, and also trades, that they may not indulge in idleness.

17Agora a Escritura diz: “Um pai justo educa bem seus filhos; seu coração se alegrará em um filho sábio”.

17Now the Scripture says, "A righteous father educates his children well; his heart shall rejoice in a wise son".

18Senhores, sejam gentis com seus servos, como o santo Jó lhes ensinou; pois existe uma natureza e uma família da humanidade.

18Masters, be gentle towards your servants, as holy Job has taught you; for there is one nature, and one family of mankind.

19Pois “em Cristo não há vínculo nem liberdade”.

19For "in Christ there is neither bond nor free".

20Que os governadores sejam obedientes a César; soldados para aqueles que os comandam; diáconos para os presbíteros, como para os sumos sacerdotes; os presbíteros, e os diáconos, e o resto do clero, juntamente com todo o povo, e os soldados, e os governadores, e o próprio César, ao bispo; o bispo para Cristo, assim como Cristo para o Pai.

20Let governors be obedient to Caesar; soldiers to those that command them; deacons to the presbyters, as to high-priests; the presbyters, and deacons, and the rest of the clergy, together with all the people, and the soldiers, and the governors, and Caesar himself, to the bishop; the bishop to Christ, even as Christ to the Father.

21E assim a unidade é preservada por toda parte.

21And thus unity is preserved throughout.

22Não sejam as viúvas errantes, nem apreciadoras de guloseimas, nem andem de casa em casa; mas que sejam como Judith, conhecida pela sua seriedade; e como Anna, eminente por sua sobriedade.

22Let not the widows be wanderers about, nor fond of dainties, nor gadders from house to house; but let them be like Judith, noted for her seriousness; and like Anna, eminent for her sobriety.

23Eu não ordeno estas coisas como apóstolo: pois “quem sou eu, ou o que é a casa de meu pai”, para que eu deva fingir ser igual em honra a elas? Mas, como seu “companheiro de combate”, mantenho a posição de alguém que simplesmente o admoesta.

23I do not ordain these things as an apostle: for "who am I, or what is my father's house," that I should pretend to be equal in honour to them? But as your "fellow-soldier," I hold the position of one who simply admonishes you.
