Gênesis 42

1Vendo então Jacó que havia mantimento no Egito, disse a seus filhos: Por que estais olhando uns para os outros?

1Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

2Disse mais: Eis que tenho ouvido que há mantimentos no Egito; descei para lá, e comprai-nos dali, para que vivamos e não morramos.

2And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.

3Então desceram os dez irmãos de José, para comprarem trigo no Egito.

3And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.

4A Benjamim, porém, irmão de José, não enviou Jacó com os seus irmãos, porque dizia: Para que lhe não suceda, porventura, algum desastre.

4But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.

5Assim, entre os que iam lá foram os filhos de Israel para comprar, porque havia fome na terra de Canaã.

5And the sons of Israel came to buy {corn} among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

6José, pois, era o governador daquela terra; ele vendia a todo o povo da terra; e os irmãos de José chegaram e inclinaram-se a ele, com o rosto em terra.

6And Joseph {was} the governor over the land, {and} he {it was} that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him {with} their faces to the earth.

7E José, vendo os seus irmãos, conheceu-os; porém mostrou-se estranho para com eles, e falou-lhes asperamente, e disse-lhes: De onde vindes? E eles disseram: Da terra de Canaã, para comprarmos mantimento.

7And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food. {roughly...: Heb. hard things with them}

8José, pois, conheceu os seus irmãos; mas eles não o conheceram.

8And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.

9Então José lembrou-se dos sonhos que havia tido deles e disse-lhes: Vós sois espias, e viestes para ver a nudez da terra.

9And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye {are} spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

10E eles lhe disseram: Não, senhor meu; mas teus servos vieram comprar mantimento.

10And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.

11Todos nós somos filhos de um mesmo homem; somos homens de retidão; os teus servos não são espias.

11We {are} all one man's sons; we {are} true {men}, thy servants are no spies.

12E ele lhes disse: Não; antes viestes para ver a nudez da terra.

12And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

13E eles disseram: Nós, teus servos, somos doze irmãos, filhos de um homem na terra de Canaã; e eis que o mais novo está com nosso pai hoje; mas um já não existe.

13And they said, Thy servants {are} twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest {is} this day with our father, and one {is} not.

14Então lhes disse José: Isso é o que vos tenho dito, sois espias;

14And Joseph said unto them, That {is it} that I spake unto you, saying, Ye {are} spies:

15Nisto sereis provados; pela vida de Faraó, não saireis daqui senão quando vosso irmão mais novo vier aqui.

15Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.

16Enviai um dentre vós, que traga vosso irmão, mas vós ficareis presos, e vossas palavras sejam provadas, se há verdade convosco; e se não, pela vida de Faraó, vós sois espias.

16Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether {there be any} truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye {are} spies. {kept...: Heb. bound}

17E pô-los juntos, em prisão, três dias.

17And he put them all together into ward three days. {put: Heb. gathered}

18E ao terceiro dia disse-lhes José: Fazei isso, e vivereis; porque eu temo a Deus.

18And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; {for} I fear God:

19Se sois homens de retidão, que fique um de vossos irmãos preso na casa de vossa prisão; e vós ide, levai mantimento para a fome de vossa casa,

19If ye {be} true {men}, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:

20E trazei-me o vosso irmão mais novo, e serão verificadas vossas palavras, e não morrereis. E eles assim fizeram.

20But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.

21Então disseram uns aos outros: Na verdade, somos culpados acerca de nosso irmão, pois vimos a angústia da sua alma, quando nos rogava; nós porém não ouvimos, por isso vem sobre nós esta angústia.

21And they said one to another, We {are} verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

22E Rúben respondeu-lhes, dizendo: Não vo-lo dizia eu: Não pequeis contra o menino; mas não ouvistes; e vedes aqui, o seu sangue também é requerido.

22And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.

23E eles não sabiam que José os entendia, porque havia intérprete entre eles.

23And they knew not that Joseph understood {them}; for he spake unto them by an interpreter. {he spake...: Heb. an interpreter was between them}

24E retirou-se deles e chorou. Depois tornou a eles, e falou-lhes, e tomou a Simeão dentre eles, e amarrou-o perante os seus olhos.

24And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.

25E ordenou José, que enchessem os seus sacos de trigo, e que lhes restituíssem o seu dinheiro a cada um no seu saco, e lhes dessem comida para o caminho; e fizeram-lhes assim.

25Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.

26E carregaram o seu trigo sobre os seus jumentos e partiram dali.

26And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.

27E, abrindo um deles o seu saco, para dar pasto ao seu jumento na estalagem, viu o seu dinheiro; porque eis que estava na boca do seu saco.

27And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it {was} in his sack's mouth.

28E disse a seus irmãos: Devolveram o meu dinheiro, e ei-lo também aqui no saco. Então lhes desfaleceu o coração, e pasmavam, dizendo um ao outro: Que é isto que Deus nos tem feito?

28And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, {it is} even in my sack: and their heart failed {them}, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What {is} this {that} God hath done unto us? {failed...: Heb. went forth}

29E vieram para Jacó, seu pai, na terra de Canaã; e contaram-lhe tudo o que lhes aconteceu, dizendo:

29And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,

30O homem, o senhor da terra, falou conosco asperamente, e tratou-nos como espias da terra;

30The man, {who is} the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country. {roughly...: Heb. with us hard things}

31Mas dissemos-lhe: Somos homens de retidão; não somos espias;

31And we said unto him, We {are} true {men}; we are no spies:

32Somos doze irmãos, filhos de nosso pai; um não mais existe, e o mais novo está hoje com nosso pai na terra de Canaã.

32We {be} twelve brethren, sons of our father; one {is} not, and the youngest {is} this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

33E aquele homem, o senhor da terra, nos disse: Nisto conhecerei que vós sois homens de retidão; deixai comigo um de vossos irmãos, e tomai para a fome de vossas casas, e parti,

33And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye {are} true {men}; leave one of your brethren {here} with me, and take {food for} the famine of your households, and be gone:

34E trazei-me vosso irmão mais novo; assim saberei que não sois espias, mas homens de retidão; então vos darei o vosso irmão e negociareis na terra.

34And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye {are} no spies, but {that} ye {are} true {men: so} will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.

35E aconteceu que, despejando eles os seus sacos, eis que cada um tinha o pacote com seu dinheiro no seu saco; e viram os pacotes com seu dinheiro, eles e seu pai, e temeram.

35And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money {was} in his sack: and when {both} they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

36Então Jacó, seu pai, disse-lhes: Tendes-me desfilhado; José já não existe e Simeão não está aqui; agora levareis a Benjamim. Todas estas coisas vieram sobre mim.

36And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved {of my children}: Joseph {is} not, and Simeon {is} not, and ye will take Benjamin {away}: all these things are against me.

37Mas Rúben falou a seu pai, dizendo: Mata os meus dois filhos, se eu não tornar a trazê-lo para ti; entrega-o em minha mão, e tornarei a trazê-lo.

37And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

38Ele porém disse: Não descerá meu filho convosco; porquanto o seu irmão é morto, e só ele ficou. Se lhe suceder algum desastre no caminho por onde fordes, fareis descer minhas cãs com tristeza à sepultura.

38And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
