Exortação aos Gregos (Clemente) 7

1Contemplai um pouco, se vos agrada, a beneficência divina. O primeiro homem, quando estava no Paraíso, brincava livre, porque era filho de Deus; mas, quando sucumbiu ao prazer (pois a serpente significa alegoricamente o prazer que rasteja sobre o ventre, a maldade terrena alimentada para servir de combustível às chamas), foi como criança seduzido pelas concupiscências e envelheceu na desobediência; e, ao desobedecer ao Pai, desonrou a Deus. Tal foi a influência do prazer. O homem, livre por causa da simplicidade, viu-se acorrentado aos pecados. O Senhor então quis libertá-lo dos grilhões e, revestindo-se de carne — ó mistério divino! —, venceu a serpente e escravizou o tirano morte; e, coisa ainda mais admirável, o homem que fora enganado pelo prazer e firmemente preso pela corrupção teve as mãos desatadas e foi libertado. Ó maravilha mística!

1Contemplate a little, if agreeable to you, the divine beneficence. The first man, when in Paradise, sported free, because he was the child of God; but when he succumbed to pleasure (for the serpent allegorically signifies pleasure crawling on its belly, earthly wickedness nour ished for fuel to the flames), was as a child seduced by lusts, and grew old in disobedience; and by disobeying his Father, dishonoured God. Such was the influence of pleasure. Man, that had been free by reason of simplicity, was found fettered to sins. The Lord then wished to release him from his bonds, and clothing Himself with flesh--O divine mystery!--vanquished the serpent, and enslaved the tyrant death; and, most marvellous of all, man that had been deceived by pleasure, and bound fast by corruption, had his hands unloosed, and was set free. O mystic wonder!

2O Senhor foi humilhado, e o homem se ergueu; aquele que caiu do Paraíso recebe como recompensa da obediência algo maior [que o Paraíso]: o próprio céu. Por isso, visto que a própria Palavra veio até nós do céu, não precisamos mais, creio eu, buscar instrução humana em Atenas e no restante da Grécia e da Jônia. Pois, se temos por mestre aquele que encheu o universo de suas santas energias na criação, salvação, beneficência, legislação, profecia e ensino, temos o Mestre de quem vem toda instrução; e o mundo inteiro, inclusive Atenas e a Grécia, já se tornou domínio da Palavra.

2The Lord was laid low, and man rose up; and he that fell from Paradise receives as the reward of obedience something greater [than Paradise]--namely, heaven itself. Wherefore, since the Word Himself has come to us from heaven, we need not, I reckon, go any more in search of human learning to Athens and the rest of Greece, and to Ionia. For if we have as our teacher Him that filled the universe with His holy energies in creation, salvation, beneficence, legislation, prophecy, teaching, we have the Teacher from whom all instruction comes; and the whole world, with Athens and Greece, has already become the domain of the Word.

3Pois vós, que acreditastes na fábula poética que designava Minos, o cretense, como amigo íntimo de Zeus, não vos recusareis a crer que nós, feitos discípulos de Deus, recebemos a única sabedoria verdadeira; e aquilo que os chefes da filosofia apenas conjecturaram, os discípulos de Cristo compreenderam e proclamaram. E o Cristo único e inteiro não está dividido: "Não há bárbaro, judeu ou grego, nem homem nem mulher, mas um novo homem", transformado pelo Espírito Santo de Deus.

3For you, who believed the poetical fable which designated Minos the Cretan as the bosom friend of Zeus, will not refuse to believe that we who have become the disciples of God have received the only true wisdom; and that which the chiefs of philosophy only guessed at, the disciples of Christ have both apprehended and proclaimed. And the one whole Christ is not divided: "There is neither barbarian, nor Jew, nor Greek, neither male nor female, but a new man," transformed by God's Holy Spirit.

4Além disso, os outros conselhos e preceitos são de menor importância e dizem respeito a questões particulares — por exemplo, se alguém pode casar-se, participar dos assuntos públicos ou gerar filhos —; mas o único mandamento universal, que abrange todo o curso da existência, em todos os tempos e circunstâncias, e tende ao fim supremo, a vida, é a piedade: tudo o que se exige para vivermos eternamente é viver segundo ela. A filosofia, porém, como dizem os antigos, é "exortação duradoura, que corteja o amor eterno da sabedoria"; enquanto o mandamento do Senhor brilha ao longe, "iluminando os olhos". Recebe Cristo, recebe a visão, recebe tua luz, "para que conheças bem tanto a Deus quanto ao homem".

4Further, the other counsels and precepts are unimportant, and respect particular things,--as, for example, if one may marry, take part in public affairs, beget children; but the only command that is universal, and over the whole course of existence, at all times and in all circumstances, tends to the highest end, viz., life, is piety, --all that is necessary, in order that we may live for ever, being that we live in accordance with it. Philosophy, however, as the ancients say, is "a long-lived exhortation, wooing the eternal love of wisdom;" while the commandment of the Lord is far-shining, "enlightening the eyes." Receive Christ, receive sight, receive thy light, "In order that you may know well both God and man."

5"Doce é a Palavra que nos dá luz, mais preciosa que ouro e pedras preciosas; deve ser desejada mais que o mel e o favo."

5"Sweet is the Word that gives us light, precious above gold and gems; it is to be desired above honey and the honey-comb."

6Como poderia não ser desejável, já que encheu de luz a mente sepultada nas trevas e deu acuidade aos "olhos portadores de luz" da alma? Pois, assim como, se não existisse o sol, a noite cobriria o universo apesar dos demais luminares do céu, também, se não conhecêssemos a Palavra e não fôssemos por ela iluminados, em nada diferiríamos de aves alimentadas e engordadas no escuro, criadas para a morte. Acolhamos, pois, a luz para acolher a Deus; acolhamos a luz e tornemo-nos discípulos do Senhor. Também isto ele prometeu ao Pai: "Declararei teu nome a meus irmãos; no meio da Igreja te louvarei."

6For how can it be other than desirable, since it has filled with light the mind which had been buried in darkness, and given keenness to the "light-bringing eyes" of the soul? For just as, had the sun not been in existence, night would have brooded over the universe notwithstanding the other luminaries of heaven; so, had we nor known the Word, and been illuminated by Him; we should have been nowise different from fowls that are being fed, fattened in darkness, and nourished for death. Let us then admit the light, that we may admit God; let us admit the light, and become disciples to the Lord. This, too, He has been promised to the Father: "I will declare Thy name to my brethren; in the midst of the Church will I praise Thee."

7Louva e anuncia-me teu Pai, Deus; tuas palavras salvam; teu hino ensina que até agora vaguei no erro, buscando Deus. Mas, já que me conduzes à luz, ó Senhor, e por ti encontro Deus e de ti recebo o Pai, torno-me "teu coerdeiro", pois "não te envergonhaste de mim como teu irmão". Afastemos, pois, afastemos o esquecimento da verdade, isto é, a ignorância; e, removendo as trevas que obstruem como uma visão turva, contemplemos o único Deus verdadeiro, erguendo primeiro a voz neste hino de louvor: Salve, ó luz! Pois sobre nós, sepultados nas trevas e encerrados na sombra da morte, brilhou do céu uma luz mais pura que o sol e mais doce que a vida terrena. Essa luz é a vida eterna; e tudo o que dela participa vive. Mas a noite teme a luz e, escondendo-se aterrorizada, cede lugar ao dia do Senhor.

7Praise and declare to me Thy Father God; Thy utterances save; Thy hymn teaches that hitherto I have wandered in error, seeking God. But since Thou leadest me to the light, O Lord, and I find God through Thee, and receive the Father from Thee, I become "Thy fellow-heir," since Thou "weft not ashamed of me as Thy brother." Let us put away, then, let us put away oblivion of the truth, viz., ignorance; and removing the darkness which obstructs, as dimness of sight, let us contemplate the only true God, first raising our voice in this hymn of praise: Hail, O light! For in us, buried in darkness, shut up in the shadow of death, light has shone forth from heaven, purer than the sun, sweeter than life here below. That light is eternal life; and whatever partakes of it lives. But night fears the light, and hiding itself in terror, gives place to the day of the Lord.

8A luz que não dorme está agora sobre todos, e o ocidente deu crédito ao oriente. Pois esse era o fim da nova criação. O "Sol da Justiça", que conduz seu carro por toda parte, permeia igualmente toda a humanidade, como "seu Pai, que faz nascer seu sol sobre todos os homens", e sobre eles destila o orvalho da verdade. Ele transformou o pôr do sol em aurora e, pela cruz, trouxe a morte à vida; e, arrancando o homem da destruição, elevou-o aos céus, transplantando a mortalidade para a imortalidade e transportando a terra ao céu — ele, o lavrador de Deus, "indicando os sinais favoráveis e despertando as nações para boas obras, lembrando-lhes o verdadeiro sustento"; concedeu-nos a herança verdadeiramente grande, divina e inalienável do Pai, divinizando o homem pelo ensino celestial, pondo suas leis em nossa mente e escrevendo-as em nosso coração.

8Sleepless light is now over all, and the west has given credence to the east. For this was the end of the new creation. For "the Sun of Righteousness," who drives His chariot over all, pervades equally all humanity, like "His Father, who makes His sun to rise on all men," and distils on them the dew of the truth. He hath changed sunset into sunrise, and through the cross brought death to life; and having wrenched man from destruction, He hath raised him to the skies, transplanting mortality into immortality, and translating earth to heaven--He, the husbandman of God, "Pointing out the favourable signs and rousing the nations To good works, putting them in mind of the true sustenance;" having bestowed on us the truly great, divine, and inalienable inheritance of the Father, deifying man by heavenly teaching, putting His laws into our minds, and writing them on our hearts.

9Que leis ele inscreve? "Todos conhecerão a Deus, do menor ao maior"; e "serei misericordioso com eles", diz Deus, "e não me lembrarei de seus pecados". Recebamos as leis da vida, atendamos às exortações de Deus; conheçamo-lo, para que nos seja favorável. E, embora Deus de nada necessite, ofereçamos-lhe a retribuição agradecida de um coração grato e da piedade, como espécie de aluguel pela morada que temos aqui embaixo.

9What laws does He inscribe? "That all shall know God, from small to great;" and, "I will be merciful to them," says God, "and will not remember their sins." Let us receive the laws of life, let us comply with God's expostulations; let us become acquainted with Him, that He may be gracious. And though God needs nothing let us render to Him the grateful recompense of a thankful heart and of piety, as a kind of house-rent for our dwelling here below.

10"Ouro por bronze, o valor de cem bois pelo de nove"; isto é, por vossa pequena fé ele vos dá uma terra tão extensa para cultivar, água para beber e também para navegar, ar para respirar, fogo para trabalhar, um mundo para habitar; e permitiu que daqui partísseis como colonos para o céu. Com essas importantes obras de sua mão e tantos benefícios, recompensou vossa pequena fé. Pois bem, os que confiam em necromantes recebem deles amuletos e encantamentos para afastar o mal, supostamente; e vós não permitireis que a Palavra celestial, o Salvador, vos seja atada como amuleto e, confiando no próprio encantamento de Deus, sejais libertos das paixões, doenças da mente, e resgatados do pecado? Pois o pecado é a morte eterna. Certamente, obtusos e cegos de todo, como toupeiras que nada fazem senão comer, passais a vida nas trevas, rodeados de corrupção.

10"Gold for brass, A hundred oxen's worth for that of nine;" that is, for your little faith He gives you the earth of so great extent to till, water to drink and also to sail on, air to breathe, fire to do your work, a world to dwell in; and He has permitted you to conduct a colony from here to heaven: with these important works of His hand, and benefits in such numbers, He has rewarded your little faith. Then, those who have put faith in necromancers, receive from them amulets and charms, to ward off evil forsooth; and will you not allow the heavenly Word, the Saviour, to be bound on to you as an amulet, and, by trusting in God's own charm, be delivered from passions which are the diseases of the mind, and rescued from sin?--for sin is eternal death. Surely utterly dull and blind, and, like moles, doing nothing but eat, you spend your lives in darkness, surrounded with corruption.

11Mas é a verdade que clama: "A luz resplandecerá das trevas." Resplandeça, pois, a luz no lugar oculto do homem, isto é, no coração; e ergam-se os raios do conhecimento para revelar e iluminar o homem interior oculto, discípulo da Luz, amigo íntimo e coerdeiro de Cristo; especialmente agora que conhecemos o nome preciosíssimo e venerável do bom Pai, que a um filho piedoso e bom dá conselhos suaves e ordena o que é salutar para seu filho. Quem lhe obedece leva vantagem em tudo, segue Deus, obedece ao Pai, conhece-o por meio de suas peregrinações, ama a Deus, ama o próximo, cumpre o mandamento, busca o prêmio e reivindica a promessa. Mas o propósito firme e constante de Deus tem sido salvar o rebanho dos homens: para isso o bom Deus enviou o bom Pastor.

11But it is truth which cries, "The light shall shine forth from the darkness." Let the light then shine in the hidden part of man, that is, the heart; and let the beams of knowledge arise to reveal and irradiate the hidden inner man, the disciple of the Light, the familiar friend and fellow-heir of Christ; especially now that we have come to know the most precious and venerable name of the good Father, who to a pious and good child gives gentle counsels, and commands what is salutary for His child. He who obeys Him has the advantage in all things, follows God, obeys the Father, knows Him through wandering, loves God, loves his neighbour, fulfils the commandment, seeks the prize, claims the promise. But it has been God's fixed and constant purpose to save the flock of men: for this end the good God sent the good Shepherd.

12E a Palavra, tendo desdobrado a verdade, mostrou aos homens a altura da salvação, para que, ou se arrependessem e fossem salvos, ou, recusando obedecer, fossem julgados. Esta é a proclamação da justiça: aos obedientes, boas novas; aos desobedientes, juízo. A trombeta sonora, quando tocada, reúne os soldados e anuncia guerra. E Cristo, soprando um canto de paz até os confins da terra, não reunirá seus próprios soldados, os soldados da paz? Pois bem, por seu sangue e pela palavra, reuniu o exército incruento da paz e lhe destinou o reino dos céus. A trombeta de Cristo é seu Evangelho. Ele a tocou, e nós ouvimos.

12And the Word, having unfolded the truth, showed to men the height of salvation, that either repenting they might be saved, or refusing to obey, they might be judged. This is the proclamation of righteousness: to those that obey, glad tidings; to those that disobey, judgment. The loud trumpet, when sounded, collects the soldiers, and proclaims war. And shall not Christ, breathing a strain of peace to the ends of the earth, gather together His own soldiers, the soldiers of peace? Well, by His blood, and by the word, He has gathered the bloodless host of peace, and assigned to them the kingdom of heaven. The trumpet of Christ is His Gospel. He hath blown it, and we have heard.

13"Revistamo-nos da armadura da paz, vestindo a couraça da justiça, tomando o escudo da fé e cingindo a fronte com o capacete da salvação; e a espada do Espírito, que é a palavra de Deus", afiemo-la. Assim ordena o apóstolo no espírito da paz. Essas são nossas armas invulneráveis: armados com elas, enfrentemos o maligno; apaguemos "os dardos inflamados do maligno" com as pontas das espadas mergulhadas em água, nós que fomos batizados pela Palavra, dando graças pelos benefícios recebidos e honrando a Deus por meio da Palavra divina. "Pois, enquanto ainda falas", diz-se, "ele dirá: Eis que estou ao teu lado." Ó poder santo e bem-aventurado, pelo qual Deus tem comunhão com os homens!

13"Let us array ourselves in the armour of peace, putting on the breastplate of righteousness, and taking the shield of faith, and binding our brows with the helmet, of salvation; and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God," let us sharpen. So the apostle in the spirit of peace commands. These are our invulnerable weapons: armed with these, let us face the evil one; "the fiery darts of the evil one" let us quench with the sword-points dipped in water, that, have been baptized by the Word, returning grateful thanks for the benefits we have received, and honouring God through the Divine Word. "For while thou art yet speaking," it is said, "He will say, Behold, I am beside thee." O this holy and blessed power, by which God has fellowship with men!

14Muito melhor, então, é tornar-se logo imitador e servo do melhor de todos os seres; pois somente pelo serviço santo alguém poderá imitar a Deus, e servi-lo e adorá-lo apenas imitando-o. O amor celestial e verdadeiramente divino chega assim aos homens quando, na própria alma, a centelha da verdadeira bondade acesa pela Palavra divina pode irromper em chama; e, o que é de máxima importância, a salvação corre paralela à vontade sincera, estando a escolha e a vida, por assim dizer, atreladas uma à outra. Por isso só esta exortação da verdade, como o mais fiel de nossos amigos, permanece conosco até o último suspiro e acompanha bondosamente toda a alma perfeita em nossa ascensão ao céu. Que exortação vos faço, então? Insto-vos a salvar-vos. É isso que Cristo deseja. Em uma palavra: ele vos concede gratuitamente a vida. E quem é ele?

14Better far, then, is it to become at once the imitator and the servant of the best of all beings; for only by holy service will any one be able to imitate God, and to serve and worship Him only by imitating Him. The heavenly and truly divine love comes to men thus, when in the soul itself the spark of true goodness, kindled in the soul by the Divine Word, is able to burst forth into flame; and, what is of the highest importance, salvation runs parallel with sincere willingness--choice and life being, so to speak, yoked together. Wherefore this exhortation of the truth alone, like the most faithful of our friends, abides with us till our last breath, and is to the whole and perfect spirit of the soul the kind attendant on our ascent to heaven. What, then, is the exhortation I give you? I urge you to be saved. This Christ desires. In one word. He freely bestows life on you. And who is He?

15Aprendei brevemente. A Palavra da verdade, a Palavra da incorruptibilidade, que regenera o homem reconduzindo-o à verdade — o aguilhão que impele à salvação; aquele que expulsa a destruição e persegue a morte; aquele que edifica nos homens o templo de Deus, para que Deus neles habite.

15Briefly learn. The Word of truth, the Word of incorruption, that regenerates man by bringing him back to the truth--the goad that urges to salvation t He who expels destruction and pursues death--He who builds up the temple of God in men, that He may cause God to take up His abode in men.

16Purifica o templo; entrega os prazeres e divertimentos aos ventos e ao fogo, como flor que murcha; mas cultiva sabiamente os frutos do domínio de ti e apresenta-te a Deus como oferta de primícias, para que haja não apenas a obra, mas também a graça de Deus; ambas são necessárias para que o amigo de Cristo seja tornado digno do reino e assim considerado.

16Cleanse the temple; and pleasures and amusements abandon to the winds and the fire, as a fading flower; but wisely cultivate the fruits of self-command, and present thyself to God as an offering of first-fruits, that there may be not the work alone, but also the grace of God; and both are requisite, that the friend of Christ may be rendered worthy of the kingdom, and be counted worthy of the kingdom.
