1No princípio do seu evangelho relata-se: Aconteceu nos dias de Herodes, rei da Judeia, sendo Caifás o sumo sacerdote, que veio um homem chamado João, que batizava com o batismo de arrependimento no rio Jordão; e dizia-se a seu respeito que era da linhagem do sacerdote Arão, filho de Zacarias e Isabel, e todos saíam ao seu encontro.

1In the beginning of their Gospel it is related: It came to pass in the days of Herod the king of Judea, when Caiaphas was high priest, that there came one, John by name, and baptized with the baptism of repentance in the river Jordan; and it was said of him that he was of the lineage of Aaron the priest, a son of Zacharias and Elisabeth, and all went out unto him.

2E aconteceu que João estava batizando, e saíam a ele os fariseus e toda a Jerusalém, e eram batizados; e João usava uma veste de pelos de camelo e um cinto de couro ao redor dos seus lombos, e o seu alimento era mel silvestre, cujo sabor era como o do maná, semelhante a um bolo mergulhado em azeite.

2And it came to pass that John was baptizing, and there went out unto him Pharisees and all Jerusalem, and were baptized; and John had a garment of camel's hair and a leather girdle about his loins, and his food was wild honey, the taste whereof was that of manna, like a cake dipped in oil.

3Apareceu certo homem chamado Jesus, de cerca de trinta anos de idade, o qual nos escolheu; e vindo a Cafarnaum, entrou na casa de Simão, chamado Pedro, e abrindo a sua boca disse: Ao passar pelo lago de Tiberíades, escolhi a João e a Tiago, filhos de Zebedeu, e a Simão e a André, a Tadeu, a Simão o Zelote e a Judas Iscariotes; e a ti, Mateus, chamei quando estavas sentado na coletoria, e tu me seguiste; quero, pois, que sejais doze apóstolos para testemunho a Israel.

3There appeared a certain man named Jesus of about thirty years of age, who chose us; and when he came to Capernaum, he entered into the house of Simon whose surname is Peter, and opened his mouth and said: As I passed by the Lake of Tiberias, I chose John and James the sons of Zebedee, and Simon and Andrew and Thaddaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, and thee, Matthew, I called as thou satest at the receipt of custom, and thou followedst me; you therefore I will to be twelve apostles for a testimony unto Israel.

4Sendo o povo batizado, veio também Jesus e foi batizado por João; e quando saía da água, abriram-se os céus e Ele viu o Espírito Santo em forma de pomba que descia e entrava n'Ele; e uma voz soou dos céus, dizendo: Tu és o Meu Filho amado, em Ti Me comprazo; e novamente: Eu hoje Te gerei; e imediatamente resplandeceu uma grande luz em torno daquele lugar; e vendo-a João, disse-Lhe: Quem és Tu, Senhor? E de novo uma voz dos céus ressoou para ele: Este é o Meu Filho amado, em Quem Me comprazo; então João prostrou-se diante d'Ele e disse: Suplico-Te, Senhor, batiza-me Tu a mim; mas Ele o impediu, dizendo: Deixa por enquanto, pois assim convém que se cumpra toda a justiça.

4When the people were baptized, Jesus also came and was baptized by John; and as he came up from the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove that descended and entered into him; and a voice sounded from heaven, saying: Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased; and again: I have this day begotten thee; and immediately a great light shone round about the place; and when John saw it, he said unto him: Who art thou, Lord? and again a voice from heaven rang out to him: This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased; then John fell down before him and said: I beseech thee, Lord, baptize me; but he prevented him, saying: Suffer it, for thus it is fitting that all things should be fulfilled.

5E quando Lhe anunciaram, dizendo: Eis que Tua mãe e Teus irmãos estão lá fora, respondeu Ele e disse: Quem é Minha mãe e quem são Meus irmãos? E estendendo a Sua mão para os Seus discípulos, declarou: Estes são Meus irmãos, Minha mãe e Minhas irmãs, aqueles que fazem a vontade de Meu Pai.

5And when it was reported unto him, saying: Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, he answered and said: Who is my mother and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples and said: These are my brethren and mother and sisters, who do the will of my Father.

6E Ele proclamou: Eu vim para abolir os sacrifícios cruentos, e se não cessardes de sacrificar, a ira de Deus não cessará de sobre vós.

6And he declared: I am come to abolish sacrifices, and if ye cease not from sacrificing, the wrath of God will not cease from you.

7E quando os discípulos Lhe disseram: Onde queres que preparemos para comeres a Páscoa? respondeu-lhes Ele: Desejei Eu porventura com avidez comer carne convosco nesta Páscoa?

7And when the disciples said unto him: Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the Passover? he answered unto them: Have I at all desired with desire to eat flesh with you at this Passover?
