Ester (Grego) 16

1Eis a cópia da carta: “Assuero, o grande rei, aos cento e vinte e sete sátrapas, aos governadores das províncias, desde a Índia até a Etiópia, e a todos os que dirigem nossos negócios, saudação.

1The great king Artexerxes unto the princes and governors of an hundred and seven and twenty provinces from India unto Ethiopia, and unto all our faithful subjects, greeting.

2Há muitos que, cumulados de honras pela grande bondade de seus benfeitores, tornaram-se arrogantes.

2Many, the more often they are honoured with the great bounty of their gracious princes, the more proud they are waxen,

3Não somente se deram a oprimir nossos súditos, mas, incapazes de se contentar com as honras recebidas, moveram maquinações contra aqueles que os tinham beneficiado.

3And endeavour to hurt not our subjects only, but not being able to bear abundance, do take in hand to practise also against those that do them good:

4E não contentes em banir do meio dos homens o sentimento de gratidão, chegam até a imaginar, na inchação faustosa de uma sorte inesperada, poder escapar à justa vingança do Deus que tudo vê.

4And take not only thankfulness away from among men, but also lifted up with the glorious words of lewd persons, that were never good, they think to escape the justice of God, that seeth all things and hateth evil.

5Muitas vezes, as insinuações dos encarregados de administrar os interesses de seus amigos arrastaram a calamidades irremediáveis os que detêm o poder e os tornaram cúmplices da morte de inocentes,

5Oftentimes also fair speech of those, that are put in trust to manage their friends’ affairs, hath caused many that are in authority to be partakers of innocent blood, and hath enwrapped them in remediless calamities:

6abusando, por uma mentirosa malícia, da simplicidade e da probidade dos príncipes.

6Beguiling with the falsehood and deceit of their lewd disposition the innocency and goodness of princes.

7Isso é o que se pode verificar, não tanto pelas relações passadas que chegaram até nós, como acabamos de recordar, quando examinamos os fatos criminosos, de vós conhecidos, perpetrados por essa calamidade de homens indignamente revestidos de autoridade.

7Now ye may see this, as we have declared, not so much by ancient histories, as ye may, if ye search what hath been wickedly done of late through the pestilent behaviour of them that are unworthily placed in authority.

8Em consequência disso, é necessário vigiar para assegurar no futuro, para todos, a tranquilidade e a paz do reino,

8And we must take care for the time to come, that our kingdom may be quiet and peaceable for all men,

9realizando mudanças e julgando prudentemente os acontecimentos que se apresentam, para enfrentá-los sempre com equidade.

9Both by changing our purposes, and always judging things that are evident with more equal proceeding.

10Ora, pois, é assim que o macedônio Amã, filho de Amadates, homem verdadeiramente estranho ao sangue dos persas e muito alheio à nossa bondade – embora gozasse de nossa hospitalidade e

10For Aman, a Macedonian, the son of Amadatha, being indeed a stranger from the Persian blood, and far distant from our goodness, and as a stranger received of us,

11fosse favorecido de nossa universal benevolência, a ponto de ser chamado nosso pai e de ver todos se curvarem diante dele até a terra, como quem ocupa o lugar da segunda pessoa depois do trono real –

11Had so far forth obtained the favour that we shew toward every nation, as that he was called our father, and was continually honoured of all the next person unto the king.

12não soube conter sua presunção e intentou privar-nos tanto do poder como da vida.

12But he, not bearing his great dignity, went about to deprive us of our kingdom and life:

13Por insinuações cautelosas e sutis, procurou a morte de nosso salvador e grande benfeitor Mardoqueu, como também a de Ester, a irrepreensível companheira de nosso reino e de toda a sua nação.

13Having by manifold and cunning deceits sought of us the destruction, as well of Mardocheus, who saved our life, and continually procured our good, as also of blameless Esther, partaker of our kingdom, with their whole nation.

14Pensava surpreender-nos assim, isolados, para transferir o império dos persas aos macedônios.

14For by these means he thought, finding us destitute of friends, to have translated the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians.

15Mas esses judeus que o criminoso votava à morte, verificamos que não eram de modo algum malfazejos, mas pelo contrário dirigidos por leis muito cheias de equidade

15But we find that the Jews, whom this wicked wretch hath delivered to utter destruction, are no evildoers, but live by most just laws:

16e que eles são os filhos do Altíssimo Deus vivo, o qual nos conserva a nós, como a nossos antepassados este reino em grande prosperidade.

16And that they be children of the most high and most mighty, living God, who hath ordered the kingdom both unto us and to our progenitors in the most excellent manner.

17Fareis, portanto, bem, não levando em conta as cartas enviadas por Amã, filho de Amadates,

17Wherefore ye shall do well not to put in execution the letters sent unto you by Aman the son of Amadatha.

18visto que o autor desse crime foi suspenso numa forca diante das portas de Susa, com toda a sua família, tendo-lhe Deus, o Senhor universal, infligido prontamente o castigo que merecia.

18For he that was the worker of these things, is hanged at the gates of Susa with all his family: God, who ruleth all things, speedily rendering vengeance to him according to his deserts.

19Que uma cópia deste presente edito seja afixada por toda a parte: deixai os judeus observar suas leis com toda a liberdade

19Therefore ye shall publish the copy of this letter in all places, that the Jews may freely live after their own laws.

20e prestai-lhes assistência para que se possam defender contra todos os que os ataquem no dia marcado para a ruína deles, isto é, no dia treze do duo­décimo mês, chamado Adar.

20And ye shall aid them, that even the same day, being the thirteenth day of the twelfth month Adar, they may be avenged on them, who in the time of their affliction shall set upon them.

21Porque esse dia, marcado para a perda da raça escolhida, Deus, o Senhor universal, o trocou em dia de alegria.

21For Almighty God hath turned to joy unto them the day, wherein the chosen people should have perished.

22Por conseguinte, celebrareis esse dia memorável com grande alegria, como uma de vossas solenidades,

22Ye shall therefore among your solemn feasts keep it an high day with all feasting:

23a fim de que agora e daqui em diante seja um dia de salvação para nós e para os persas de boa vontade e uma recordação da ruína dos que maquinaram contra nós.

23That both now and hereafter there may be safety to us and the well affected Persians; but to those which do conspire against us a memorial of destruction.

24Toda cidade e toda província que não observar essas ordens será entregue à furiosa devastação do ferro e do fogo; desse modo, se tornará não somente inacessível aos homens, mas ainda horror perpétuo para os animais selvagens e para as aves”.

24Therefore every city and country whatsoever, which shall not do according to these things, shall be destroyed without mercy with fire and sword, and shall be made not only unpassable for men, but also most hateful to wild beasts and fowls for ever.
