1Não disputes com um homem poderoso, para que não caias em suas mãos.

1Strive not with a mighty man’ lest thou fall into his hands.

2Não tenhas desavença com um rico, para não acontecer que ele te mova um processo;

2Be not at variance with a rich man, lest he overweigh thee: for gold hath destroyed many, and perverted the hearts of kings.

3pois o ouro e a prata perderam a muitos, e o poder deles chega até a transviar o coração de um rei.

3Strive not with a man that is full of tongue, and heap not wood upon his fire.

4Não tenhas desavença com um grande falador, e não amontoes lenha em sua fogueira.

4Jest not with a rude man, lest thy ancestors be disgraced.

5Não convivas com um homem mal-educado, para não acontecer que ele fale mal de teus antepassados.

5Reproach not a man that turneth from sin, but remember that we are all worthy of punishment.

6Não desprezes um homem que renuncia ao pecado, não lhe dirijas censuras; lembra-te de que todos merecemos o castigo.

6Dishonour not a man in his old age: for even some of us wax old.

7Não desprezes um ancião, pois alguns dentre nós também envelheceremos.

7Rejoice not over thy greatest enemy being dead, but remember that we die all.

8Não te alegres com a morte de teu inimigo, pois sabes que todos morreremos, e não queremos que com isso se regozijem.

8Despise not the discourse of the wise, but acquaint thyself with their proverbs: for of them thou shalt learn instruction, and how to serve great men with ease.

9Não desprezes o que contarem os velhos sábios, mas entretém-te com suas palavras,

9Miss not the discourse of the elders: for they also learned of their fathers, and of them thou shalt learn understanding, and to give answer as need requireth.

10pois é com eles que aprenderás a sabedoria, os ensinamentos da inteligência, e a arte de servir irrepreensivelmente aos poderosos.

10Kindle not the coals of a sinner, lest thou be burnt with the flame of his fire.

11Não desprezes os ensinamentos dos anciãos, pois eles os aprenderam com seus pais.

11Rise not up in anger at the presence of an injurious person, lest he lie in wait to entrap thee in thy words

12Estudarás com eles o conhecimento e a arte de responder com oportunidade.

12Lend not unto him that is mightier than thyself; for if thou lendest him, count it but lost.

13Não acendas os tições dos pecadores, repreendendo-os, para não acontecer que te queimes nas chamas dos seus pecados.

13Be not surety above thy power: for if thou be surety, take care to pay it.

14Não resistas perante um insolente, para que ele não arme ciladas às tuas palavras.

14Go not to law with a judge; for they will judge for him according to his honour.

15Não emprestes dinheiro a alguém mais poderoso do que tu, pois, se lhe emprestares, considera-o perdido.

15Travel not by the way with a bold fellow, lest he become grievous unto thee: for he will do according to his own will, and thou shalt perish with him through his folly.

16Não prestes fiança a outrem além de tuas posses, pois, se o fizeres, considera-te na obrigação de pagá-la.

16Strive not with an angry man, and go not with him into a solitary place: for blood is as nothing in his sight, and where there is no help, he will overthrow thee.

17Não julgues o procedimento de um juiz, pois ele julga conforme a equidade.*

17Consult not with a fool; for he cannot keep counsel.

18Não enveredes por um caminho com um audacioso, para não acontecer que ele faça recair sobre ti seus delitos; pois ele só age segundo o seu capricho, e por causa de sua loucura perecerás com ele.

18Do no secret thing before a stranger; for thou knowest not what he will bring forth.

19Não tenhas desavença com um homem irascível; não vás para o deserto com um audacioso, porque para ele nada vale o sangue, e ele te destruirá quando te achares sem socorro.

19Open not thine heart to every man, lest he requite thee with a shrewd turn.

20Não deliberes com loucos, pois só amam o que lhes agrada.*
