Eclesiástico 39

1O sábio procura cuidadosamente a sabedoria de todos os antigos, e aplica-se ao estudo dos profetas.

1But he that giveth his mind to the law of the most High, and is occupied in the meditation thereof, will seek out the wisdom of all the ancient, and be occupied in prophecies.

2Guarda no coração as narrativas dos homens célebres, e penetra ao mesmo tempo nos mistérios das máximas.

2He will keep the sayings of the renowned men: and where subtil parables are, he will be there also.

3Penetra nos segredos dos provérbios, e vive com o sentido oculto das parábolas.

3He will seek out the secrets of grave sentences, and be conversant in dark parables.

4Exerce o seu cargo no meio dos poderosos, e comparece perante aqueles que governam.

4He shall serve among great men, and appear before princes: he will travel through strange countries; for he hath tried the good and the evil among men.

5Viaja pela terra de povos estrangeiros, para reconhecer o que há do bem e do mal entre os homens.

5He will give his heart to resort early to the Lord that made him, and will pray before the most High, and will open his mouth in prayer, and make supplication for his sins.

6Desde o alvorecer aplica o coração à vigília para se unir ao Senhor que o criou, e ora na presença do Altíssimo.

6When the great Lord will, he shall be filled with the spirit of understanding: he shall pour out wise sentences, and give thanks unto the Lord in his prayer.

7Abre sua boca para orar, e pede perdão de seus pecados,

7He shall direct his counsel and knowledge, and in his secrets shall he meditate.

8pois se for da vontade do Senhor que é grande, ele o cumulará do espírito de inteligência.

8He shall shew forth that which he hath learned, and shall glory in the law of the covenant of the Lord.

9Então, ele espargirá como uma chuva palavras de sabedoria, e louvará o Senhor em sua oração.

9Many shall commend his understanding; and so long as the world endureth, it shall not be blotted out; his memorial shall not depart away, and his name shall live from generation to generation.

10O Senhor orientará seus conselhos e seus ensinamentos, e ele meditará nos mistérios divinos.

10Nations shall shew forth his wisdom, and the congregation shall declare his praise.

11Ensinará ele próprio o conhecimento de sua doutrina. Porá sua glória na Lei da aliança do Senhor.

11If he die, he shall leave a greater name than a thousand: and if he live, he shall increase it.

12Muitos homens louvarão sua sabedoria: jamais cairá ela no esquecimento.

12Yet have I more to say, which I have thought upon; for I am filled as the moon at the full.

13A sua memória não desaparecerá; seu nome será repetido de geração em geração.

13Hearken unto me, ye holy children, and bud forth as a rose growing by the brook of the field:

14As nações proclamarão sua sabedoria, a assembleia apregoará seu louvor.

14And give ye a sweet savour as frankincense, and flourish as a lily, send forth a smell, and sing a song of praise, bless the Lord in all his works.

15Enquanto viver, terá maior nome que mil outros, e, quando repousar, será feliz.

15Magnify his name, and shew forth his praise with the songs of your lips, and with harps, and in praising him ye shall say after this manner:

16Refletirei ainda para contá-lo, pois estou cheio de um entusiasmo*

16All the works of the Lord are exceeding good, and whatsoever he commandeth shall be accomplished in due season.

17que diz: Ouvi-me, rebentos divinos, desabrochai como uma roseira plantada à beira das águas;

17And none may say, What is this? wherefore is that? for at time convenient they shall all be sought out: at his commandment the waters stood as an heap, and at the words of his mouth the receptacles of waters.

18como o Líbano, espargi suave aroma,

18At his commandment is done whatsoever pleaseth him; and none can hinder, when he will save.

19dai flores como o lírio, exalai perfume e estendei graciosa folhagem. Cantai cânticos e bendizei o Senhor nas suas obras.

19The works of all flesh are before him, and nothing can be hid from his eyes.

20Dai ao seu nome magníficos elogios, glorificai-o com a voz de vossos lábios, com os cânticos de vossos lábios e a música das harpas. Direis assim à guisa de louvor:

20He seeth from everlasting to everlasting; and there is nothing wonderful before him.

21Todas as obras do Senhor são excelentes;*

21A man need not to say, What is this? wherefore is that? for he hath made all things for their uses.

22à sua voz conteve-se a água amontoada, a uma palavra de sua boca as águas ajuntaram-se como em reservatórios.

22His blessing covered the dry land as a river, and watered it as a flood.

23À sua ordem, fez-se calmaria, e a salvação que ele dá não será mesquinha.

23As he hath turned the waters into saltness: so shall the heathen inherit his wrath.

24São-lhe apresentadas as ações de todos os viventes, nada é oculto aos seus olhos.

24As his ways are plain unto the holy; so are they stumblingblocks unto the wicked.

25Seu olhar abrange de um século a outro: nada é maravilhoso para ele.

25For the good are good things created from the beginning: so evil things for sinners.

26Não se deve dizer: “O que é isso, o que é aquilo?”. Pois todas as coisas serão examinadas a seu tempo.

26The principal things for the whole use of man’s life are water, fire, iron, and salt, flour of wheat, honey, milk, and the blood of the grape, and oil, and clothing.

27A bênção dele é como um rio que transborda;

27All these things are for good to the godly: so to the sinners they are turned into evil.

28como o dilúvio inundou a terra inteira, assim a sua cólera será a sorte dos povos que não o procuram.

28There be spirits that are created for vengeance, which in their fury lay on sore strokes; in the time of destruction they pour out their force, and appease the wrath of him that made them.

29Assim como ele transformou as águas em aridez e ressecou a terra, e o seu comportamento é determinado pelo deles, assim, em sua ira, seu comportamento é motivo de queda para os pecadores.

29Fire, and hail, and famine, and death, all these were created for vengeance;

30Assim como os bens, desde o princípio, foram criados para os bons, assim os bens e os males o foram para os maus.

30Teeth of wild beasts, and scorpions, serpents, and the sword punishing the wicked to destruction.

31As coisas mais necessárias à vida do homem são: a água, o fogo, o ferro, o sal, o leite, o pão da flor de farinha, o mel, a uva, o azeite e o vestuário:

31They shall rejoice in his commandment, and they shall be ready upon earth, when need is; and when their time is come, they shall not transgress his word.

32todas essas coisas são bens para os fiéis, mas tornam-se males para os ímpios e os pecadores.

32Therefore from the beginning I was resolved, and thought upon these things, and have left them in writing.

33Há espíritos que foram criados para a vingança: aumentaram seus tormentos pelo seu furor.

33All the works of the Lord are good: and he will give every needful thing in due season.

34No tempo do extermínio manifestarão sua força, e apaziguarão a fúria daquele que os criou.

34So that a man cannot say, This is worse than that: for in time they shall all be well approved.

35Fogo, granizo, fome e morte, tudo isso foi criado para a vingança,

35And therefore praise ye the Lord with the whole heart and mouth, and bless the name of the Lord.

36como também os dentes dos animais, os escorpiões, as serpentes, e a espada vingadora destinada ao extermínio dos ímpios.

37Todas essas coisas se regozijam com as ordens do Senhor, e mantêm-se prontas sobre a terra para servir oportunamente, e, chegando o tempo, não omitirão uma só de suas palavras.

38Por isso, desde o princípio estou firme em minhas ideias; refleti e as escrevi.

39Todas as obras do Senhor são boas; ele põe cada coisa em prática quando chega o tempo.

40Não há razão para dizer: “Isto é pior do que aquilo”, porque todas as coisas serão achadas boas a seu tempo.

40—

41E agora, de todo o coração e com a boca, cantai e bendizei o nome do Senhor!
