1Fizeram-te rei (do festim)? Não te enalteças. Sê no meio dos outros como qualquer um deles.

1If thou be made the master of a feast , lift not thyself up, but be among them as one of the rest; take diligent care for them, and so sit down.

2Ocupa-te com eles e em seguida senta-te. Não tomes lugar à mesa, senão após cumpridos os teus deveres,*

2And when thou hast done all thy office, take thy place, that thou mayest be merry with them, and receive a crown for thy well ordering of the feast.

3assim te regozijarás por causa deles. Receberás a coroa como um gracioso adorno, e ganharás a consideração dos convivas.*

3Speak, thou that art the elder, for it becometh thee, but with sound judgment; and hinder not musick.

4Tu, mais idoso, fala, pois convém

4Pour not out words where there is a musician, and shew not forth wisdom out of time.

5que sejas o primeiro a falar, com séria competência. Mas não perturbes a música,

5A concert of musick in a banquet of wine is as a signet of carbuncle set in gold.

6nem te alongues em discursos, onde não há quem os ouça. Não te engrandeças sem propósito por causa de tua sabedoria.*

6As a signet of an emerald set in a work of gold, so is the melody of musick with pleasant wine.

7Como uma pedra de rubi engastada no ouro, assim é a música no meio de uma refeição regada a vinho.

7Speak, young man, if there be need of thee: and yet scarcely when thou art twice asked.

8Como um sinete de esmeraldas engastadas em ouro, assim é um grupo de músicos no meio de uma alegre e moderada libação.

8Let thy speech be short, comprehending much in few words; be as one that knoweth and yet holdeth his tongue.

9Ouve em silêncio, e tua modéstia provocará a benevolência.

9If thou be among great men, make not thyself equal with them; and when ancient men are in place, use not many words.

10Jovem, fala muito pouco de teus assuntos privados.*

10Before the thunder goeth lightning; and before a shamefaced man shall go favour.

11Se fores duas vezes interrogado, que tua resposta seja concisa.

11Rise up betimes, and be not the last; but get thee home without delay.

12Em muitas coisas, porta-te como se as ignorasses; ouve em silêncio e pergunta.*

12There take thy pastime, and do what thou wilt: but sin not by proud speech.

13No meio dos poderosos, não tomes muitas liberdades; não fales muito onde houver anciãos:

13And for these things bless him that made thee, and hath replenished thee with his good things.

14vê-se o relâmpago antes de se ouvir o estalido, a graça precede o rubor da modéstia. Pelo teu recato serás benquisto.

14Whoso feareth the Lord will receive his discipline; and they that seek him early shall find favour.

15Uma vez chegada a hora de se levantar, não te demores; sê o primeiro a correr para casa,* onde te regozijarás com os divertimentos.

15He that seeketh the law shall be filled therewith: but the hypocrite will be offended thereat.

16Faze o que te aprouver, porém sem pecado e sem orgulho.

16They that fear the Lord shall find judgment, and shall kindle justice as a light.

17E em tudo isso glorifica o Senhor que te criou, e que te cumula de todos os seus bens.

17A sinful man will not be reproved, but findeth an excuse according to his will.

18Aquele que teme o Senhor aceitará sua doutrina, aqueles que vigiam para procurá-lo serão por ele abençoados.

18A man of counsel will be considerate; but a strange and proud man is not daunted with fear, even when of himself he hath done without counsel.

19Aquele que busca a Lei, por ela será cumulado. Aquele, porém, que procede com falsidade, nela achará ocasião de pecado.

19Do nothing without advice; and when thou hast once done, repent not.

20Aqueles que temem o Senhor terão um juízo reto, e farão brilhar como uma tocha a sua justiça.

20Go not in a way wherein thou mayest fall, and stumble not among the stones.

21O pecador foge da censura, e encontra precedentes segundo o seu desejo.

21Be not confident in a plain way.

22O homem prudente não perde ocasião alguma para instruir-se, e o estranho ou o orgulhoso não tem nenhum temor;

22And beware of thine own children.

23mesmo quando age sozinho e sem conselheiro, ele será castigado pelos seus próprios desígnios.

23In every good work trust thy own soul; for this is the keeping of the commandments.

24Meu filho, nada faças sem conselho, e não te arrependerás depois de teres agido.

24He that believeth in the Lord taketh heed to the commandment; and he that trusteth in him shall fare never the worse.

25Não te embrenhes num caminho de perdição e não tropeçarás nas pedras. Não te metas num caminho escabroso, para não pores diante de ti uma pedra de tropeço.

26Previne-te contra teus filhos, sê prudente em presença de teus familiares.

27Em tudo o que fizeres, age com segurança, pois isso é guardar os mandamentos.

28Aquele que crê em Deus atende ao que ele manda. Aquele que põe sua confiança nele, não será atingido.
