Eclesiástico 29

1Aquele que tem compaixão empresta com juros ao seu próximo; aquele que tem a mão generosa guarda os mandamentos.

1He that is merciful will lend unto his neighbour; and he that strengtheneth his hand keepeth the commandments.

2Empresta a teu próximo quando ele estiver necessitado, e de teu lado, paga-lhe o que lhe deves, no tempo marcado.

2Lend to thy neighbour in time of his need, and pay thou thy neighbour again in due season.

3Cumpre tua palavra e procede lealmente com ele, e acharás em toda ocasião o que te é necessário.

3Keep thy word, and deal faithfully with him, and thou shalt always find the thing that is necessary for thee.

4Muitos consideraram como um achado o que pediam emprestado, e causaram desgosto àqueles que os ajudaram.

4Many, when a thing was lent them, reckoned it to be found, and put them to trouble that helped them.

5Até que se tenha recebido, beija-se a mão de quem empresta; com voz humilde fazem-se promessas;*

5Till he hath received, he will kiss a man’s hand; and for his neighbour’s money he will speak submissly: but when he should repay, he will prolong the time, and return words of grief, and complain of the time.

6mas, chegando o tempo de restituir, pedem-se prazos; só se têm palavras pesarosas e queixas; e toma-se como pretexto a dificuldade da época.

6If he prevail, he shall hardly receive the half, and he will count as if he had found it: if not, he hath deprived him of his money, and he hath gotten him an enemy without cause: he payeth him with cursings and railings; and for honour he will pay him disgrace.

7Se o que pede emprestado pode restituir, nega-se a princípio. Restitui em seguida só a metade da quantia, e a considera como um lucro.

7Many therefore have refused to lend for other men’s ill dealing, fearing to be defrauded.

8Se não tem meios para pagar, priva o que emprestou do seu dinheiro, e dele se faz gratuitamente um inimigo.

8Yet have thou patience with a man in poor estate, and delay not to shew him mercy.

9Ele o paga com ofensas e maldições, e paga com o mal o bem que recebeu.

9Help the poor for the commandment’s sake, and turn him not away because of his poverty.

10Muitos não emprestam, não por maldade, mas por medo de serem injustamente iludidos.*

10Lose thy money for thy brother and thy friend, and let it not rust under a stone to be lost.

11Todavia, sê indulgente para com o miserável, e não o faças esmorecer depois da esmola.

11Lay up thy treasure according to the commandments of the most High, and it shall bring thee more profit than gold.

12Por causa do mandamento, socorre o pobre; e não o deixes ir com as mãos vazias na sua indigência.

12Shut up alms in thy storehouses: and it shall deliver thee from all affliction.

13Perde o teu dinheiro em favor de teu irmão e de teu amigo; não o escondas debaixo de uma pedra para ficar perdido.

13It shall fight for thee against thine enemies better than a mighty shield and strong spear.

14Gasta o teu tesouro segundo o preceito do Altíssimo, e isso te aproveitará mais do que o ouro.

14An honest man is surety for his neighbour: but he that is impudent will forsake him.

15Encerra a esmola no coração do pobre, e ela rogará por ti, a fim de te preservar de todo o mal.*

15Forget not the friendship of thy surety, for he hath given his life for thee.

16Para combater o teu inimigo, ela será uma arma mais poderosa do que o escudo e a lança de um homem valente.*

16A sinner will overthrow the good estate of his surety:

17O homem de bem responsabiliza-se pelo próximo; o homem sem pejo abandona-o a si próprio.

17And he that is of an unthankful mind will leave him in danger that delivered him.

18Não esqueças o benefício daquele que se responsabiliza por ti, pois ele arriscou a vida para te amparar.

18Suretiship hath undone many of good estate, and shaken them as a wave of the sea: mighty men hath it driven from their houses, so that they wandered among strange nations.

19O pecador e o impudico fogem de seu fiador;

19A wicked man transgressing the commandments of the Lord shall fall into suretiship: and he that undertaketh and followeth other men’s business for gain shall fall into suits.

20o pecador atribui a si mesmo o benefício de quem por ele se responsabiliza, e com coração ingrato abandona o seu libertador.

20Help thy neighbour according to thy power, and beware that thou thyself fall not into the same.

21Um homem se responsabiliza pelo seu próximo, e este, perdendo a vergonha, o abandonará.

21The chief thing for life is water, and bread, and clothing, and an house to cover shame.

22Um mau penhor perdeu muitas pessoas que prosperavam, e as agitou como as ondas do mar;

22Better is the life of a poor man in a mean cottage, than delicate fare in another man’s house.

23por uma reviravolta das coisas, ele exilou muitos poderosos, que se tornaram peregrinos em terra estrangeira.

23Be it little or much, hold thee contented, that thou hear not the reproach of thy house.

24O pecador que transgride o mandamento do Senhor se comprometerá a responder inoportunamente por outro; e aquele que tentar muitos empreendimentos não escapará do processo.

24For it is a miserable life to go from house to house: for where thou art a stranger, thou darest not open thy mouth.

25Ajuda o próximo conforme as tuas posses, e acautela-te para que não caias tu também.

25Thou shalt entertain, and feast, and have no thanks: moreover thou shalt hear bitter words:

26O principal para a vida do homem é a água, o pão, o vestuário e uma casa para ocultar a sua nudez.

26Come, thou stranger, and furnish a table, and feed me of that thou hast ready.

27Mais vale o que um pobre come sob um vigamento do que um magnífico banquete em casa alheia para quem não tem domicílio.

27Give place, thou stranger, to an honourable man; my brother cometh to be lodged, and I have need of mine house.

28Contenta-te com o pouco ou muito que tiveres e evitarás a censura de seres um estranho.

28These things are grievous to a man of understanding; the upbraiding of houseroom, and reproaching of the lender.

29É uma vida miserável a daquele que vai de casa em casa; em toda parte onde se hospedar, não estará confiante, e não ousará abrir a boca.

30Recebe-se com hospitalidade, dá-se de comer e de beber a ingratos; e, depois disso, ouvem-se palavras desagradáveis:*

31“Vamos, intruso, prepara a mesa, e o que tens, dá-o de comer aos outros;

31—

32retira-te, por causa da homenagem que devo prestar aos meus amigos. Preciso de minha casa para nela receber meu irmão”.*

32—

33Eis coisas penosas para um homem sensato: ouvir censuras pela hospitalidade e pelo empréstimo que se fez.
