Eclesiástico 23

1Senhor, meu pai e soberano de minha vida, não me abandoneis ao conselho de meus lábios, e não permitais que eles me façam sucumbir.

1O Lord, Father and Governor of all my whole life, leave me not to their counsels, and let me not fall by them.

2Quem fará sentir o chicote em meus pensamentos, e em meu coração a doutrina da sabedoria, para eu não ser poupado nos pecados por ignorância, a fim de que esses erros não apareçam?

2Who will set scourges over my thoughts, and the discipline of wisdom over mine heart? that they spare me not for mine ignorances, and it pass not by my sins:

3Para que não aumentem as minhas omissões, e não se multipliquem as minhas ignorâncias, e eu não caia diante de meus adversários, e não escarneça de mim o meu inimigo?

3Lest mine ignorances increase, and my sins abound to my destruction, and I fall before mine adversaries, and mine enemy rejoice over me, whose hope is far from thy mercy.

4Senhor, meu pai e Deus de minha vida, não me abandoneis às suas sugestões;

4O Lord, Father and God of my life, give me not a proud look, but turn away from thy servants always a haughty mind.

5não me deis olhos altivos e preservai-me da cobiça!

5Turn away from me vain hopes and concupiscence, and thou shalt hold him up that is desirous always to serve thee.

6Afastai de mim a intemperança! Que a paixão da volúpia não se apodere de mim e não me entregueis a uma alma sem pejo e sem pudor!

6Let not the greediness of the belly nor lust of the flesh take hold of me; and give not over me thy servant into an impudent mind.

7Ouvi, filhos, o conhecimento que eu vos dou: aquele que o guardar não perecerá pelos lábios, nem cairá em ações criminosas.

7Hear, O ye children, the discipline of the mouth: he that keepeth it shall never be taken in his lips.

8O pecador é apanhado pela sua leviandade; o orgulhoso e o maledicente nela encontrarão motivos de queda.

8The sinner shall be left in his foolishness: both the evil speaker and the proud shall fall thereby.

9Que tua boca não se acostume ao juramento, porque isso leva a muitos pecados.

9Accustom not thy mouth to swearing; neither use thyself to the naming of the Holy One.

10Que o nome de Deus não esteja sempre na tua boca, e que não mistures nas tuas conversas o nome dos santos, porque nisso não estarias isento de culpa.

10For as a servant that is continually beaten shall not be without a blue mark: so he that sweareth and nameth God continually shall not be faultless.

11Pois, assim como um escravo submetido continuamente à tortura dela trará as cicatrizes, assim todo homem que jura pelo nome de Deus, não poderá totalmente escapar ao pecado.

11A man that useth much swearing shall be filled with iniquity, and the plague shall never depart from his house: if he shall offend, his sin shall be upon him: and if he acknowledge not his sin, he maketh a double offence: and if he swear in vain, he shall not be innocent, but his house shall be full of calamities.

12O homem que jura com frequência será cheio de iniquidade, e o flagelo não deixará a sua casa;

12There is a word that is clothed about with death: God grant that it be not found in the heritage of Jacob; for all such things shall be far from the godly, and they shall not wallow in their sins.

13se não cumprir o juramento, sua culpa recairá sobre ele; e, se dissimular, pecará duplamente.*

13Use not thy mouth to intemperate swearing, for therein is the word of sin.

14Se jurar em vão, isso não o justificará: sua casa será cheia de castigos.

14Remember thy father and thy mother, when thou sittest among great men. Be not forgetful before them, and so thou by thy custom become a fool, and wish that thou hadst not been born, and curse they day of thy nativity.

15Há uma outra palavra que merece a morte, e não deve ser encontrada na herança de Jacó!*

15The man that is accustomed to opprobrious words will never be reformed all the days of his life.

16Tudo isto está longe dos homens piedosos, que não se comprazem em tais crimes.

16Two sorts of men multiply sin, and the third will bring wrath: a hot mind is as a burning fire, it will never be quenched till it be consumed: a fornicator in the body of his flesh will never cease till he hath kindled a fire.

17Não acostumes tua boca a uma linguagem grosseira, pois aí sempre haverá pecado.

17All bread is sweet to a whoremonger, he will not leave off till he die.

18Lembra-te de teu pai e de tua mãe, quando te achares no meio dos poderosos,

18A man that breaketh wedlock, saying thus in his heart, Who seeth me? I am compassed about with darkness, the walls cover me, and no body seeth me; what need I to fear? the most High will not remember my sins:

19para não acontecer que Deus se esqueça de ti na presença deles, e que, tornando-te insensato pela tua excessiva familiaridade, tenhas de suportar um insulto, e desejes não ter nascido, e amaldiçoes o dia do teu nascimento.*

19Such a man only feareth the eyes of men, and knoweth not that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter than the sun, beholding all the ways of men, and considering the most secret parts.

20O homem acostumado a dizer palavras injuriosas jamais se corrigirá disso.

20He knew all things ere ever they were created; so also after they were perfected he looked upon them all.

21Duas espécies de pessoas multiplicam os pecados, e a terceira atrai sobre si a cólera e a perdição.

21This man shall be punished in the streets of the city, and where he suspecteth not he shall be taken.

22A alma que queima como um fogo ardente não se apagará antes de ter devorado alguma coisa.

22Thus shall it go also with the wife that leaveth her husband, and bringeth in an heir by another.

23O homem que abusa de seu próprio corpo, não terá sossego enquanto não acender uma fogueira.

23For first, she hath disobeyed the law of the most High; and secondly, she hath trespassed against her own husband; and thirdly, she hath played the whore in adultery, and brought children by another man.

24Para o fornicador todo o alimento é doce; não se cansará de pecar até a morte.

24She shall be brought out into the congregation, and inquisition shall be made of her children.

25O homem que profana seu leito prejudica-se a si mesmo, e diz: “Quem me vê?

25Her children shall not take root, and her branches shall bring forth no fruit.

26As trevas me rodeiam, as paredes me escondem; ninguém me olha; a quem temerei? O Altíssimo não se recordará de meus pecados”.

26She shall leave her memory to be cursed, and her reproach shall not be blotted out.

27E ele não compreende que o olhar de Deus tudo vê, que um semelhante temor humano exclui dele o temor a Deus, e que os olhos dos homens o temem.

27And they that remain shall know that there is nothing better than the fear of the Lord, and that there is nothing sweeter than to take heed unto the commandments of the Lord.

28Ele não sabe que os olhos do Senhor são muito mais luminosos que o sol, que examinam por todos os lados o procedimento dos homens, as profundezas do abismo, e investigam o coração humano até em seus mais íntimos esconderijos.

28It is great glory to follow the Lord, and to be received of him is long life.

29Pois o Senhor Deus conhecia todas as coisas antes de tê-las criado, e as vê todas, depois que as completou.

30Este tal será castigado nas praças públicas da cidade; será posto em fuga como o potro da égua, e será apanhado onde menos o esperar.

31Será vexado diante de todos, porque não compreendeu o que é o temor a Deus.

31—

32Assim também perecerá toda mulher que deixar seu marido, e lhe der como herdeiro um filho adulterino,

32—

33porque primeiramente ela foi desobediente à Lei do Altíssimo, em segundo lugar pecou contra o seu marido, cometendo assim um adultério, dando-se a si filhos de outro homem.

33—

34Essa mulher será trazida perante a assembleia, e seus filhos serão vigiados.

34—

35Seus filhos não pegarão raízes; seus ramos não darão frutos.

35—

36Ela deixará uma memória maldita, e sua desonra jamais se apagará.

36—

37E todos aqueles que lhe sobreviverem reconhecerão que nada é melhor do que o temor a Deus, e nada mais suave que guardar os seus preceitos.

37—

38É uma grande glória seguir o Senhor, pois é ele quem dá vida longa.
