Eclesiástico 19

1O operário dado ao vinho não se enriquecerá, e aquele que se descuida das pequenas coisas cairá pouco a pouco.

1A labouring man that is given to drunkenness shall not be rich: and he that contemneth small things shall fall by little and little.

2O vinho e as mulheres fazem sucumbir até mesmos os sábios, e tornam culpados os homens sensatos.

2Wine and women will make men of understanding to fall away: and he that cleaveth to harlots will become impudent.

3Aquele que se une às prostitutas é um homem de nenhuma valia; ele se tornará pasto da podridão e dos vermes; ficará sendo um grande exemplo, e sua alma será suprimida do número dos vivos.

3Moths and worms shall have him to heritage, and a bold man shall be taken away.

4Aquele que é crédulo demais tem um coração leviano; sofrerá prejuízo e será tido como pecador contra si mesmo.

4He that is hasty to give credit is lightminded; and he that sinneth shall offend against his own soul.

5Quem se regozija com a iniquidade será desonrado; quem detesta a correção abreviará a sua vida; quem odeia a tagarelice destrói sua malícia.

5Whoso taketh pleasure in wickedness shall be condemned: but he that resisteth pleasures crowneth his life.

6Quem peca contra si próprio, se arrependerá de tê-lo feito; quem põe sua alegria na malícia será apontado como infame.

6He that can rule his tongue shall live without strife; and he that hateth babbling shall have less evil.

7Não repitas uma palavra dura e maldosa, e não serás prejudicado.

7Rehearse not unto another that which is told unto thee, and thou shalt fare never the worse.

8Não confies teu pensamento nem ao amigo nem ao inimigo. Se tiveres cometido uma falta, não a reveles,*

8Whether it be to friend or foe, talk not of other men’s lives; and if thou canst without offence, reveal them not.

9pois ele te ouvirá, e observará, e, fingindo desculpar o teu pecado, te odiará. E estará sempre presente para te prejudicar.*

9For he heard and observed thee, and when time cometh he will hate thee.

10Ouviste uma palavra contra o teu próximo? Abafa-a dentro de ti; fica seguro de que ela não te fará morrer.

10If thou hast heard a word, let it die with thee; and be bold, it will not burst thee.

11Por causa de uma palavra irrefletida o tolo estorce-se de dores, como uma mulher que geme para dar à luz.

11A fool travaileth with a word, as a woman in labour of a child.

12Como uma flecha cravada na gordura da coxa, assim é uma palavra no coração do insensato.

12As an arrow that sticketh in a man’s thigh, so is a word within a fool’s belly.

13Repreende o teu amigo, porque talvez não tenha compreendido, e diga: “Nada fiz”. Ou se o fez, para que não torne a fazê-lo.*

13Admonish a friend, it may be he hath not done it: and if he have done it, that he do it no more.

14Repreende o teu próximo, porque talvez não tenha dito aquilo de que é acusado. Ou, se o disse, para que não o torne a dizer.

14Admonish thy friend, it may be he hath not said it: and if he have, that he speak it not again.

15Repreende o teu próximo, porque muitas vezes se diz o que não é verdade,

15Admonish a friend: for many times it is a slander, and believe not every tale.

16e não acredites em tudo o que dizem. Homem há que peca pela língua, mas sem fazer com intenção.

16There is one that slippeth in his speech, but not from his heart; and who is he that hath not offended with his tongue?

17Pois quem não peca pela língua? Repreende o teu próximo antes de ameaçá-lo e dá ensejo ao temor do Altíssimo;

17Admonish thy neighbour before thou threaten him; and not being angry, give place to the law of the most High.

18pois toda a sabedoria consiste no temor a Deus; nela está o temor a Deus. E em toda a sabedoria reside o cumprimento da Lei.

18The fear of the Lord is the first step to be accepted of him , and wisdom obtaineth his love.

19O hábito de praticar o mal não é sabedoria; o modo de agir dos pecadores não é prudência.

19The knowledge of the commandments of the Lord is the doctrine of life: and they that do things that please him shall receive the fruit of the tree of immortality.

20Há uma malícia hábil que é execrável, e há uma estupidez que é apenas falta de sabedoria.

20The fear of the Lord is all wisdom; and in all wisdom is the performance of the law, and the knowledge of his omnipotency.

21Mais vale o homem que tem pouca sabedoria, e a quem falta o senso, mas que tem o temor (a Deus), do que o homem que possui uma grande inteligência, e que transgride a Lei do Altíssimo.

21If a servant say to his master, I will not do as it pleaseth thee; though afterward he do it, he angereth him that nourisheth him.

22Há uma habilidade que não falha o alvo, mas que é iníqua.

22The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, neither at any time the counsel of sinners prudence.

23Há quem fale com segurança e só diz a verdade, e há quem se humilhe maliciosamente, cujo coração está cheio de embuste.*

23There is a wickedness, and the same an abomination; and there is a fool wanting in wisdom.

24Há quem se rebaixe com excesso em profunda humilhação, e quem abaixe a cabeça, fingindo não ver o que está oculto.*

24He that hath small understanding, and feareth God, is better than one that hath much wisdom, and transgresseth the law of the most High.

25Se a fraqueza o impede de cometer o mal, não deixará de pecar, logo que houver ocasião.

25There is an exquisite subtilty, and the same is unjust; and there is one that turneth aside to make judgment appear; and there is a wise man that justifieth in judgment.

26Pelo semblante se reconhece um homem; pelo seu aspecto se reconhece um sábio.

26There is a wicked man that hangeth down his head sadly; but inwardly he is full of deceit,

27As vestes do corpo, o riso dos dentes, e o modo de andar de um homem fazem-no revelar-se.

27Casting down his countenance, and making as if he heard not: where he is not known, he will do thee a mischief before thou be aware.

28Há uma falsa correção na cólera de um insolente; há um modo de julgar que muitas vezes não é justo; e aquele que se cala dá prova de prudência.

28And if for want of power he be hindered from sinning, yet when he findeth opportunity he will do evil.

29A man may be known by his look, and one that hath understanding by his countenance, when thou meetest him.

30A man’s attire, and excessive laughter, and gait, shew what he is.
