Eclesiástico 18

1O eterno tudo criou sem exceção, só o Senhor será considerado justo. Ele é o rei invencível que permanece para sempre.

1He that liveth for ever Hath created all things in general.

2Quem será capaz de relatar as suas obras?

2The Lord only is righteous, and there is none other but he,

3Quem poderá compreender as suas maravilhas?

3Who governeth the world with the palm of his hand, and all things obey his will: for he is the King of all, by his power dividing holy things among them from profane.

4Quem poderá descrever todo o poder de sua grandeza? Quem empreenderá a explicação de sua misericórdia?

4To whom hath he given power to declare his works? and who shall find out his noble acts?

5Nada há a subtrair, nada a acrescentar às maravilhas de Deus; elas são incompreensíveis.

5Who shall number the strength of his majesty? and who shall also tell out his mercies?

6Quando o homem tiver acabado, então estará no começo; e quando cessar a pesquisa, ficará perplexo.

6As for the wondrous works of the Lord, there may nothing be taken from them, neither may any thing be put unto them, neither can the ground of them be found out.

7Que é o homem, e para que serve? Que mal ou que bem pode ele fazer?

7When a man hath done, then he beginneth; and when he leaveth off, then he shall be doubtful.

8A duração da vida humana é quanto muito cem anos. No dia da eternidade esses breves anos serão contados como uma gota de água do mar, como um grão de areia.

8What is man, and whereto serveth he? what is his good, and what is his evil?

9É por isso que o Senhor é paciente com os homens, e espalha sobre eles a sua misericórdia.

9The number of a man’s days at the most are an hundred years.

10Ele vê quanto é má a presunção do seu coração, e reconhece que o fim deles é lamentável;

10As a drop of water unto the sea, and a gravelstone in comparison of the sand; so are a thousand years to the days of eternity.

11é por isso que ele os trata com toda a doçura, e mostra-lhes o caminho da justiça.

11Therefore is God patient with them, and poureth forth his mercy upon them.

12A compaixão de um homem concerne ao seu próximo, mas a misericórdia divina estende-se sobre todo ser vivo.

12He saw and perceived their end to be evil; therefore he multiplied his compassion.

13Cheio de compaixão, Deus ensina os homens, e os repreende como um pastor o faz com o seu rebanho.*

13The mercy of man is toward his neighbour; but the mercy of the Lord is upon all flesh: he reproveth, and nurtureth, and teacheth and bringeth again, as a shepherd his flock.

14Compadece-se daquele que recebe os ensinamentos de sua misericórdia, e do que se apressa a cumprir os seus preceitos.

14He hath mercy on them that receive discipline, and that diligently seek after his judgments.

15Meu filho, não mistures a repreensão com o benefício, não acrescentes nunca palavras duras e más às tuas dádivas.

15My son, blemish not thy good deeds, neither use uncomfortable words when thou givest any thing.

16Porventura o orvalho não refresca o calor ardente? Assim, uma palavra doce vale mais do que um presente.

16Shall not the dew asswage the heat? so is a word better than a gift.

17A doçura das palavras não prevalece sobre a própria dádiva? Mas uma e outra coisa se encontram no homem justo.

17Lo, is not a word better than a gift? but both are with a gracious man.

18O insensato censura com aspereza; a dádiva de um indiscreto resseca os olhos.

18A fool will upbraid churlishly, and a gift of the envious consumeth the eyes.

19Antes de julgar, procura ser justo; antes de falar, aprende.

19Learn before thou speak, and use physick or ever thou be sick.

20Usa o remédio antes de ficares doente. Interroga-te a ti mesmo antes do juízo, e acharás misericórdia diante de Deus.

20Before judgment examine thyself, and in the day of visitation thou shalt find mercy.

21Antes da doença, humilha-te, e no tempo da enfermidade mostra o teu proceder.*

21Humble thyself before thou be sick, and in the time of sins shew repentance.

22Nada te impeça de orar sempre, e não te envergonhes de progredir na justiça até a morte; pois a recompensa de Deus é eterna.*

22Let nothing hinder thee to pay thy vow in due time, and defer not until death to be justified.

23Antes da oração, prepara a tua alma, e não sejas como um homem que tenta a Deus.*

23Before thou prayest, prepare thyself; and be not as one that tempteth the Lord.

24Lembra-te da ira do último dia, e do tempo em que Deus castigará, desviando o rosto.

24Think upon the wrath that shall be at the end, and the time of vengeance, when he shall turn away his face.

25Lembra-te da pobreza quando estiveres na abundância e das necessidades da indigência no dia da riqueza.

25When thou hast enough, remember the time of hunger: and when thou art rich, think upon poverty and need.

26Entre a manhã e a tarde muda o tempo, e tudo isto acontece num instante aos olhos de Deus.

26From the morning until the evening the time is changed, and all things are soon done before the Lord.

27Um homem sábio está sempre alerta; nos dias de tentação, se resguarda do pecado.

27A wise man will fear in every thing, and in the day of sinning he will beware of offence: but a fool will not observe time.

28Todo homem sagaz reconhece a sabedoria, e presta homenagem àquele que a encontrou.

28Every man of understanding knoweth wisdom, and will give praise unto him that found her.

29Os homens de linguagem sensata procedem também com sabedoria, compreendem a verdade e a justiça, e espalham uma multidão de sentenças e máximas.

29They that were of understanding in sayings became also wise themselves, and poured forth exquisite parables.

30Não te deixes levar por tuas más inclinações, e refreia os teus apetites.

30Go not after thy lusts, but refrain thyself from thine appetites.

31Se satisfizeres a cobiça de tua alma, ela fará de ti a alegria dos teus inimigos.

31If thou givest thy soul the desires that please her, she will make thee a laughingstock to thine enemies that malign thee.

32Não te comprazas no meio das multidões, mesmo das menores, porque nelas somos constantemente comprometidos.*

32Take not pleasure in much good cheer, neither be tied to the expence thereof.

33Não te empobreças, pedindo empréstimos para aparentar, quando nada tens na algibeira; isso equivaleria a atentar contra a tua própria vida.

33Be not made a beggar by banqueting upon borrowing, when thou hast nothing in thy purse: for thou shalt lie in wait for thine own life, and be talked on.
