Eclesiástico 13

1Quem toca no betume ficará manchado; e quem trata com o orgulhoso, se tornará orgulhoso.

1He that toucheth pitch shall be defiled therewith; and he that hath fellowship with a proud man shall be like unto him.

2Quem se liga com um mais poderoso do que ele põe sob os ombros uma pesada carga. Não te tornes amigo de um mais poderoso do que tu.

2Burden not thyself above thy power while thou livest; and have no fellowship with one that is mightier and richer than thyself: for how agree the kettle and the earthen pot together? for if the one be smitten against the other, it shall be broken.

3Que ligação pode haver entre um pote de barro e um pote de ferro? Quando houver choque, o pote de barro será quebrado.

3The rich man hath done wrong, and yet he threateneth withal: the poor is wronged, and he must intreat also.

4O rico comete uma injustiça e em seguida se põe a gritar; o pobre, ofendido, guarda silêncio.*

4If thou be for his profit, he will use thee: but if thou have nothing, he will forsake thee.

5Enquanto lhe servires, ele te empregará; quando nada mais tiveres, ele te abandonará.

5If thou have any thing, he will live with thee: yea, he will make thee bare, and will not be sorry for it.

6Se tens haveres, ele se banqueteará contigo, te esgotará e não cuidará de tua sorte.

6If he have need of thee, he will deceive thee, and smile upon thee, and put thee in hope; he will speak thee fair, and say, What wantest thou?

7Se lhe fores útil, ele te dominará; com um sorriso ele te dará esperanças, com belas palavras te dirá: “De que necessitas?”.

7And he will shame thee by his meats, until he have drawn thee dry twice or thrice, and at the last he will laugh thee to scorn afterward, when he seeth thee, he will forsake thee, and shake his head at thee.

8Ele te confundirá com seus banquetes, até que te tenha exaurido duas ou três vezes; e, por fim, zombará de ti; depois, vendo-te, te abandonará, e abanará a cabeça, escarnecendo de ti.

8Beware that thou be not deceived and brought down in thy jollity.

9Humilha-te perante Deus e espera que sua mão execute.

9If thou be invited of a mighty man, withdraw thyself, and so much the more will he invite thee.

10Tem cuidado em não te deixares seduzir, para que não caias numa loucura aviltante.*

10Press thou not upon him, lest thou be put back; stand not far off, lest thou be forgotten.

11Não te rebaixes em tua sabedoria, para não suceder que esse rebaixamento te arraste à loucura.

11Affect not to be made equal unto him in talk, and believe not his many words: for with much communication will he tempt thee, and smiling upon thee will get out thy secrets:

12Se um poderoso te chamar, retira-te, e ele será ainda mais levado a insistir.

12But cruelly he will lay up thy words, and will not spare to do thee hurt, and to put thee in prison.

13Não sejas importuno, para não acontecer que ele se canse de ti; não te afastes muito dele, para não suceder que ele te esqueça.

13Observe, and take good heed, for thou walkest in peril of thy overthrowing: when thou hearest these things, awake in thy sleep.

14Não tenhas a audácia de falar de igual para igual com ele, e não confies em suas longas conversas. Pois fazendo-te falar muito, ele te experimentará, e com um sorriso te interrogará sobre os teus segredos.

14Love the Lord all thy life, and call upon him for thy salvation.

15Seu coração impiedoso relembrará todas as tuas palavras, e não te poupará nem aos maus-tratos nem às cadeias.

15Every beast loveth his like, and every man loveth his neighbor.

16Cuida de ti e presta bem atenção aos teus ouvidos, pois caminhas à beira de um abismo.*

16All flesh consorteth according to kind, and a man will cleave to his like.

17Mas, ouvido tudo isso, encara-o como um sonho, e serás vigilante;

17What fellowship hath the wolf with the lamb? so the sinner with the godly.

18ama a Deus durante toda a tua vida, e invoca-o para tua salvação.

18What agreement is there between the hyena and a dog? and what peace between the rich and the poor?

19Todo ser vivo ama o seu semelhante, assim todo homem ama o seu próximo.

19As the wild ass is the lion’s prey in the wilderness: so the rich eat up the poor.

20Toda carne se une a outra carne de sua espécie, e todo homem se associa ao seu semelhante.

20As the proud hate humility: so doth the rich abhor the poor.

21O lobo jamais terá amizade com o cordeiro: assim é entre o pecador e o justo.

21A rich man beginning to fall is held up of his friends: but a poor man being down is thrust away by his friends.

22Que relação pode haver entre um santo homem e um cão? Que ligação pode ter um rico com um pobre?*

22When a rich man is fallen, he hath many helpers: he speaketh things not to be spoken, and yet men justify him: the poor man slipped, and yet they rebuked him too; he spake wisely, and could have no place.

23O onagro é a presa do leão no deserto: assim os pobres servem de pasto aos ricos.

23When a rich man speaketh, every man holdeth his tongue, and, look, what he saith, they extol it to the clouds: but if the poor man speak, they say, What fellow is this? and if he stumble, they will help to overthrow him.

24E, como a humanidade é abominada pelo orgulhoso, do mesmo modo o pobre causa horror ao rico.

24Riches are good unto him that hath no sin, and poverty is evil in the mouth of the ungodly.

25Um rico abalado é apoiado pelos seus amigos. O pobre que tropeça é ainda empurrado pelos seus companheiros.

25The heart of a man changeth his countenance, whether it be for good or evil: and a merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance.

26Quando um rico é enganado, numerosos são aqueles que o vêm ajudar; se diz tolices, o apoiam.

26A cheerful countenance is a token of a heart that is in prosperity; and the finding out of parables is a wearisome labour of the mind.

27Quando um pobre é enganado, ainda merece censura, e, se falar com sabedoria, não o levam em consideração.

28Se fala o rico, todos se calam, e glorificam suas palavras até as nuvens;

29se fala um pobre, dizem: “Que é este homem?”. E, se ele tropeçar, fazem-no cair.

30A riqueza é boa para quem não tem a consciência pesada, péssima é a pobreza do mau que se lastima.

31O coração do homem modifica seu rosto, seja em bem, seja em mal.

32O sinal de um coração feliz é um rosto alegre, tu o acharás dificilmente e com esforço.*
